Guerilla has spoken on recent Killzone 2 screens criticisms.

This is what the Guerilla unit had to say on Playstation boards about Kotaku's claims on the newly released KZ2 images as doctored :-

Image doctoring is a common, and for the most part, accepted practice amongst those in the game industry.

Killzone 2 will be the most graphically and aurally accomplished game in recent memory. This game is, even now, blowing other games' production values out of the water.

Even though it was admitted that it was touched up a bit, these touch ups are nothing that will tax the hardware. Even though my expectations are low from a graphical update standpoint, I'm fairly optimistic that the final product will look at least closer to the right screen.

99% of screenshots released from most games are mostly BS (bullshots), usually sporting very high levels of AA. Im ok with this approach as you will still get the general idea of looks. Maybe the "next" gen consoles will support 16xAA or some form of super sampling techniques, just like PC`s can do given the right hardware.

No, not really... COD4 looks good, but not near as good as the picture on the right of the comparrison shot. That Killzone 2 blows everything I've seen out of the water. The Killzone 2 back at E-3 was litterally the most impresive thing ever shown in videogame form.

This new garbage they're showing... I don't know what to think, but it's not good. It's about on par with COD4, to be honest.

Killzone 2 winds up being a good game. It's probably the most hyped game of this generation and has a lot to live up to. Judging from Guerilla's track record every PS3 owner needs to crosss their fingers. Espcially considering the bar has been raised further by games like Call of Duty 4.

Killzone has internet buzz...that's it. It's rarely seen in magazines, NOWHERE on television, absolutely NO association with products, the marketing just isn't really there yet.

Add to that, nobody from Sony or Guerrilla has promised jack about the game, and the only hype thats left is speculation and scuttlebutt.

Lair wasn't directly overseen, funded, and produced by Sony. This is.

Lair didn't have the benefit of having a tremendous amount of feedback from a sub par first entry...this does.

Now, all of this isn't to say that Killzone 2 WILL be a success, but I really don't think it will flop Lair style. It could very well end up being a dud, but not quite that bad.

Point out the innovation and/or originality of most FPS games. For the most part FPS innovation was done years ago on pc's. Adding new graphics and a story isnt innovation, its natural progression. Quake had nearly all the core implementations of any FPS game of today, they have only gotten prettier, smarter, and better connected.

Aside from all that, something does not have to be innovative to be fun.

Lets be real here so what if they touched it up a bit, we all saw the video for E3 and it looks amazing. So far there isn't a game that can match KILLZONE 2 except CRYSIS, the game play looks solid so all they have to do is fix the AI, add vehicles, coop for Campaign and release it on time early 08.

Totally agree with you, killzone 2 is gonna own like a muddaf#ka, my only problem with the visuals is that the textures are too smooth and flat and not detailed enough for me but it makes up for that in post processing and lighting effects, so far the only game that is on par in visuals is crysis, both games give the sense of insane immersions and all ingame real time cutscenes look pre-rendered and the motion blur is realistic, the environment destruction and interactivity even deepens the immersion and each game is so technically ahead of their generations, i'm really impressed with guerilla and crytek and what they are doing for the fps genre setting the new standards, whine and nag all u want about all graphics no gameplay, but let me tell u, from my experience with crysis, graphics are just as important and can give you that immersion in gameplay that turns a linear run and gun thing into a really fun and mindblowing experience unlike other shooters,
as a proud ps3 owner and a kickass gaming rig all hooked up to my hdtv, i recommend a gaming pc to all ps3 owners, it owns, u get most of the xbot exclusives with more content and better graphics(waiting to play halo 3 in true 1080p), from halo to gears and most likely mass effect(checkout bioware's track record and jade empire) , and still have an awesome bluray console to get the ultimate gaming experience, both pc and ps3 have that in common with free lagless online and multimedia capabilities,

The ability to share clips of your multiplayer battles, the four player co-op that has you going for a high score, the skull idea, and multiplayer map that can be tooled with are fantastic ideas. It's more than just a simple shooter, and everyone knows how the AI is when cranked up to the top difficulty.
Call of Duty 4 is a rollercoaster ride, with a fun and unique arcade mode.
Resistance had a fun campaign, with new unlockable weapons available on the second play through.
Killzone 2 can't just show up to the party hoping to get by on the hype and contraversy over the graphics. It's going to need brains, and innovating new modes of play. Something the competition has delivered.

Remaining entirely in first person throughout gameplay is something I believe we have yet to see. Having almost no HUD in an FPS I think is a first. I know Gears had a limited HUD, but that was 3PS. Also, seamless cinematic to gameplay is relatively new to gaming...Plus, no one knows what kind of multiplayer features this game will have. Its all being kept under wraps. There is much to still learn about this game before passing judgment.

You are right KZ2 has to bring something more to the table than pretty graphics, but I have seen videos of there "lean and peak" cover system its really cool you can take cover in a gears of war fasion but first person view, which (correct me if I am wrong) is the first time this type of cover system has been implemented. Also they have that "hit response system" which uses real life physics with pre rendered models to give an extremely realistic dying effect.

I could say that Killzone 2 is the same as Killzone 1 but with better graphics, stop being an ass and wait for the game to come out. I am buying it but don't hate on Halo 3 without good reason, I think that Halo 3's graphics are pretty good actually, the gameplay is awesome and I love playing the single player and mutiplayer, can't wait for the new maps in a few days, will be getting those.

I did love Killzone 1 but there was so many serious flaws, the framerate was crappy for the most part, the voices of the enemies were just repeated which got so annoying but I did love the art style, the grenade explosions, the guns etc.

However I want Killzone 2 to be a solid shooter which is FUN, remember that kids, FUN. I don't think Killzone 2 will do any innovate tbh and I know that but if its fun to play, looks great then I will buy it.

I'm going to have to wait and see some previews of this game before I get all excited. Something just doesn't seem right. I have a gut feeling that this game isn't going to blow everyone away.

However, I will be the first to admit I'm wrong if it gets good reviews.

Why are so many bashing the first Killzone? I liked the game. Actually still play it on the PS3. I have COD4, and to be honest - I like the original Killzone more than COD4. Given the choice which one to replay - I will pick Killzone. Maybe it is just the massive undermining campaign that people try to downplay Killzone because they see it as a credible threat to Halo - which I don't get - they don't even seem to be competing.

Great job Guerilla - just get the thing finished will you? This is one of the games that is a day one buy for me.

I liked the first Killzone a fair amount as well. Maybe not more than COD4... but I think that a lot of people who talk about how much it sucked probably never even played it, they're just parroting what they've heard. Although it wasn't a "Halo Killer" like so many love to throw out, it did a lot of things right and was overall a good game, and worth trying out in my opinion. It certainly had it's problems, and the most glaring of those was that it was too much for the ps2 to handle. Some of the levels also didn't feel really well thought out, there wasn't much reason to ever use a couple of the characters, and you never had the impression it was a full-scale war, but more of a skirmish on the outskirts of one.
In the end though it had good art direction, some great weapons that really felt like weapons and not mattel toys, a long campaign through several very different environments and good atmosphere that already looks like it's going to make a great showing on the ps3. It was a good game brought down a bit by some poor choices in it's development, but mostly by the limitations of the system it was on.

Most of all for me personally, it was the first FPS title I'd played on a console that I actually enjoyed and that's worth something. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out on the PS3, but at this point it's on my purchase list.

Seeing as though there were rumors before the E3 07 showing we could see it as early as Fall 2007, it's been in development since 2005 and we were promised to get a chance playing at least the beta someime in late 2007 you would think something about its release would be mentioned by someone close to the project?

Things like this really makes me question purchasing the game. If GG is capable of perpetually misdirecting consumers with phony pictures and videos, what makes you think that the end-product would be any different?

They are stalling with releasing authentic material (in terms of pics and vids) for a reason. I am pretty sure that they put their foot in their mouths...again. I love the PS3 to a pulp, but having shady developers consistently hype something up that's not authentic really damages the console's reputation/credibility as well as the developer's. They better release something 'real' in the next couple of weeks to make up for their constant mistakes because the way GG is 'promoting' this is, it's kind of scaring me at what kind of game this is really going to turn out to be.

lmfao, they admitted it because Kotaku called them out, I have no doubt that some images for other games are touched up a bit before its released to the public but from what I understand its minor editing only done because taking screenshots from a game in motion causes small distortions/errors in the screenshots which devs like to fix so the pics represents exactly what the game looks like but here its OBVIOUS that those screenshots had ALOT more "enhancements" made besides subtle pixel correction/nuance distortions,

As a matter of fact Meus Renaissance, makes quite a lot of sence to me. This is, if I´m not wrong, the second time Guerrilla (or Sony, for what it matters) has not been straight forward about a public display of visual preview of this game.
I am really tired of looking at screenshots that, in the end, don´t show what the game truly looks like. At least, if companies are to release a preview they should not state "this is real time graphics" ehwn showing a pre-rendered scene which is far from the actual realtime engine...

It´s note the first time that this happened, and it will not be the last.

As far as I see it, is dishonest peblicity to show something that does not reflect the final product and not making it clear.

U know hoe they say in those toys commercials... that transformer toys won´t move for themselves, animation is just for advertising means; batteries not included...

I guyess in the case of the first KZ2 trailer that should have been said instead of: "this is the real deal"

Most people in the Online gaming community know about the waves KillZone 2 made with that E305 trailer. Once it was proven that those visuals were CGI, there was wide dismissals and criticism towards Sony for that - and deserved so in my opinion because they implied that was the game.

Two years later, they show the game at E307 and its safe to say hardly anyone was complaining despite the game not looking quite like its target render two years back. Everyone was surprised by the visuals, and the fact that it wasn't just a video but actually being played on stage.

Now, on the individual basis, the "re-touching" of those released screenshots was unethical although it is undeserved to construe some sort of criminality with that. Despite the fact that several developers sharpen up their promotional media, this is getting more attention because it's "that game"; KillZone 2, with so much controversy surrounding its graphics. But it's irrelevant because the game, visually, has proved itself in the eyes of the majority except a few consisting of staunch critics and pure haters.

Guerilla Games, for the simple sole fact that they retouched their images and were caught out on it, deserve criticism but lets not act like this isn't rife in the industry generally so why are we trying to associate it exclusively and uniquely with this game? This isn't some unique issue by GG to desperately try to make the game look better because it in reality the visuals are weak. They have proved themselves and when you consider that as a whole, I don't think the criticism should really be taken with much degree from those give it.

It's not a stretch to state that probably alot of the motivation behind that actually comes from the mystery and "cloak & dagger" surrounding the game before its unveiling a few months ago. People are still holding onto their rifles in defiance; and for the first time since before this year's E3, they now have something to hate upon.

It's pointless and its wholly irrelevant to the underlying issue here which relates to that E32005 trailer. That's my opinion anyway. Ofcourse you will disagree but life goes on for me.

KillZone 2 is shaping up to be the most visually stellar FPS on any console to date. No one is intelligent enough to challenge or deny that. So sharpening up a few images and adding more contrast to them = silly. But KillZone 2 doesn't really need "re-touching".

P.S. Has anyone even considered the possibility that they have actually polished the game or intend to (so those screenshots become representative)?

i agree meus, them doctoring screens isnt necessary and I dont quite understand their logic as to why they did it. First off, they are virtually the same shots that we saw before, so GG, being intelligent beings after all, had to expect comparisons and ultimately, criticism. Secondly, they really dont need to touch up the game, its impressive enough. So, that brings us to the question of WHY.

I am not going to pretend to know the answer to that question. But there are a few possibilities:

1. Any buzz is good buzz especially if you higher expectations and then lower them and then show everyone that you can meet those higher expectations.
2. Their PR is terrible.
3. These screens are targets.
4. Pressure from sony to release new screens, but not too new (I think we will get something very cool for xmas)
5. GG doesnt have the product they want and so... they make sh*t up to hype it and really really think consumers are stupid.
6. Seb is an idiot and should lose his job
7. Seb is a genius and should get promoted

I agree entirely with both of you...

SCEE and GG have really been troubled with PR issues around this game...and I have no idea why...

this game had by far the biggest showing of any at E3 05...and the buzz could have stayed all positive had SCE just said that this, motorstorm, and everything else...where just target renders...Motorstorm delivered very well towards that target render, its by far one of the best looking racing games around (despite there not being any of that crazy camera work that the target render used so effectively)...and there is no doubt that KZ2 will deliver even more so imo...

but just like the above pointed out...why touch up the pictures?...these are not new pictures by any means...we have all seen the trailer and gameplay footage of which these screens were captured...we have seen it in motion...and it looked great, albeit still far from complete...

so why set yourself up for another "Sony lied" situation...E307 finally pulled this game completely out of the mud, but its almost as if someone internally is desperately trying to slip back in that hole...

w/e...we need real new screens...not doctored...and new gameplay of new levels...then we will shut up all over again...

Meh this happened with NGS and most likely happened with the NG2 screens that surfaced a while back. Some of the screenshots I have seen for Mass Effect are probably bullshots having played the game myself. Honesly games like Killzone, COD4 etc need to be seen in motion captures whether they are bullshots or not do not do these games justice.
