Its Official: Divx coming to PS3

DivX, Inc. today announced that DivX video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION 3. The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback.

"Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date.

Internally you can fit any SATA 2.5" HDD in there.

Externally you can run any external USB HDD as long as it is formatted in FAT32.

Can DivX also play Xvid videos or only Divx encoded videos? Because most AVI files i.e. anime etc. are usually encoded using Xvid and they work on my HDD DivX/Xvid Player, so I'm wondering if they would work straight away on my PS3?

As far as I know a lot of videos now use Xvid, which requires separate codecs to DivX, I wonder what the chances of that being included too? As Xvid is free hopefully it will follow soon after.

You can now stream all the movies you download illegally from your PS-3 without having to convert to a MPEG-1/2/4 format or better yet just transfer it to your HD in your PS-3.

Its a file format that is previously unsupported, but the most widely used format around. This is the main file type used for filesharing movies and tv shows. It will mean you can pull them off your pc and put them on a disc or stick to play on your ps3. Or stream over wifi without the need for added software or codecs :)

Xvid is the competing codec to Divx. If Sony signed on with Divx, that means they probably won't do any alternate codecs for a while.

WMA works on the PS3. You have to turn the option on in the Settings tab. I don't know about WMV, though.

I guess the more codec's they include the better, but I assume most people who want to watch various video formats are acessing them via a mediaserver from their PC anyway? If you're using something like TVersity, it converts any codec into PS3 data on the fly, so I simply browse the 2 Terrbytes of files I have on my Pc network and watch or listen or view anything regardless of its format.

As I said, its no bad thing, but it doesn't make a huge difference to me! :)

This is actually very funny...if you are so happy about this (which I'm not knocking-it IS cool), this means you have divx movies stored on your PCs, which means you have to find a way to get them to your P$3 for playback. I know there are programs out there for P$3/PC streaming but do they work with DivX?

you can alkready stream divx stuff etc...just download ffdshow ( http://sourceforge.net/proj... ) and tversity ( http://tversity.com/home ) and just use tversity as usual, using ANY kinda video format available...it WILL work!! (if it does, bubbles 4 meee) it even works in HD

TVersity works but has had problems since firmware 2.0. They have since released a new version that claims to have fixed this.

On the whole TVersity is excellent and supports photos, music and video. If you do video don't forget to set the resolution to 720p/1080p (you might need a Core 2 Duo and wired network for this).

Cons and Pros.

I was wondering, whether the 360 or the PS3 would be the first to give the "green light". I have been using Tversity for content that is not supported and it works great, but I know something was up when the PS3 was able to "See" some of my "XVID" files but would show up as corrupted when you tried to play them.

Movie studios probably won't like this move, as Pirated movies are encoded to this format and as well as, "Xvid", which seesm to be the popular choice amongst Movie Torrent these days.

What I'm really waiting for, since I used XBMC on my old Xbox, is the day XBMC(linux version) comes out and being able to use linux on the PS3 + XBMC, without waiting for the "Green light" from sony certain formats will be sweet.

+1 in the Media department for PSN, we'll see what MS has in store, but XVID would be nice too, then I still wouldn't need to "transcode". Somethings gotta give, will people neglect buying movies, then instead download them and have them upscaled.

This is good and bad, whether it from Sony or MS, but I'm not complaining. In other news, the is not so much Game related but will get the attention of certain groups of people.

This is weird because if you're smart enough to know how to use DIVX then you should be smart enough to use or at least have heard of TVersity. I've been using it to convert movies from DIVX to XB360 movie format on the fly ever since I got a 360. TVersity works with Wii and PS3 as well. I guess this is great for people who's PC sucks and can't convert movies on the fly.

this is a high quality video codec that allows a person to have relatively small video files with very high image and sound quality. most of the media(video) you find on the internet is encoded as divx or xvid, which enhances the ability of the ps3 as a media device...something more to do when you arent playing games

How can DIVX support increase the liklihood of illegal vids when there are plenty of software options for converting video from one format to another such as PS3-Video9? Thus any video format can be considered PS3-able however direct support saves a shedload of time and trouble.
