Soon the PS3 will be getting Google Chrome as internetbrowser

The Internet browser of the PlayStation 3 was a terrible browser, when the console was released. Over the years there has been some improvements, but the browser is still not what it should be. Many people now want Firefox or the Google Chrome browser on the PS3. There is evidence now that points to a Google Chrome internetbrowser.

Yeah, the PS3 browser is pretty atrocious! It's worse than my phone browser. In fact, my phone browser is just not better it is far better.

The PS3 browser is a POS that crashes all the time.

Getting the Chrome browser is a huge step up and one giant leap in the right direction.

I think everyone will agree the PS3 needs some sort of better browser so this would be nice if it's true.

On the Firefox vs. Chrome bit, I use Firefox on my PC and have tried Chrome. Honestly, I am getting really tired of Firefox. I love the add-ons but I hate the fact that they are all independent and have hardly any integration. With every Firefox update I find I have some sort of new issue and I have to go down the list of add-ons and disable them until I find which one is causing it. It's just becoming more of a pain than it's worth. chrome has very little that can be done with it other than worthless cosmetic things, which may be a good thing. Hell, I may just go back to IE, but I really wish the PS3 had something better for the odd time that I actually "surf" with my PS3.

sony using the android os for their phone? I think google owns android and so a partnership between google and sony seems like a factor behind this rumor.

Personally I think opera would be better as it uses less resources than chrome and firefox is the better of the 3 because of its add-in support. That isnt to say chrome sux but it is certainly better than the one the ps3 uses now.

To bad they couldnt get safari as that browser is pretty nice. Apple and sony could do this because of their business venture in other areas.

The PS3 browser can easily run 480p and on some websites even 720p videos but youtube is restricted to 240p for some reason...

Since Youtube=Google I am sure when this update comes Google will unable AT LIST 480p which is like regular TV quality.

Even now I use my PS3 to go on youtube sometimes because I can't be bothered to move my desktop and my laptop has no HDMI so 480p on youtube would mean a lot to me.

Chrome's a great browser but if it's not recoded from scratch to run on a 3.2Ghz PowerPC chip it's going to be bog slow. I'd take it further and suggest that they should find a way to extend the SPUs as invisible coprocessors so that Hulu and other sites can run at 1080P.

They would most likely added for security reason, mainly bc hackers @ pwn2own(hacking contest/event) have yet to crack it(chrome) unlike all of the other browsers.

So if it happen the real reason behind would be security and not just a new feature ps3 owners could enjoy, I'm pretty sure Sony will tell ppl to enjoy the new feature, if it was added.

But its better than being hit with another security update soon as you turn on your ps3.

I'm more than a it certain that such will never happen. If the PS3 gets a decent browser, then that means you'll be able to watch Hulu w/o having to go through the Hulu+ app. That people can watch whatever they want including illegal streaming sites. And even though you can do that from a PC, for whatever reason, Sony doesn't want to be able to do it from a PS3.

You can already cruise over to *insert your fav streaming site* to get free tv shows and movies using the ps3 browser. The downside of course is that it is mostly ie. 99.9% pirated stuff. And we know how taboo that has become lately in here. The other downside is that for hd streaming content the ps3 browser runs out of memory and crashes. Like when i stream high quality top gear videos from **********.com. Hopefully chrome is able to handle the functions better.

Just saying, that for whatever lame reason, someone at some point at Sony either decided to limit the browser, or has forgotten about it. Things might change, there have been more than a few management rearrangements after all, but for now the browser will remain crippled because it was designed that way.

As far as pure speed is concerned:
Windows: Chrome (However Firefox 4 has been nice lately)
Mac: Safari (Still better than everything else)

Does this mean I use Chrome and Safari over Firefox? Hell no. Because of the extensions/add-ons I tend to use Firefox is the best browser for me.

In all honesty though, the speed differences for me are hardly noticeable. So given the customization that is available with Firefox versus the others, I'll take Firefox.

Sometimes, random spaces will appear in my comments. When I try to edit it by deleting the extra space, it just pops back up again. You can't truthfully tell me what my browser is doing. I can only assume it's an infrequent (but still annoying) glitch.

I doubt Sony would add in a 3rd party browser to the PS3. They are all about In-house development, why would they change now?

Because Sony understands that collaboration with Google = World Domination! Sony is starting to understand that, instead of wasting time and resource on developing their own in-house version of an app , just use an already established and proven version of that app. For example: BBC Player.

Anyway, Chrome is way faster and lighter than Firefox 4. The only reason I am not using Chrome is because Chrome doesn't have my favorite add-ons from Firefox.

the ps3 browser isn't perfect but it's still decent enough for a lot of site.
the bbc iplayer and youtube work, mostly.

... as far as speed and weight goes. Acquiring Google Chrome instead of Firefox is a good idea because the basis of Google's browser is still lighter than Firefox's. Also you have to remember that Google has a lot more USEFUL plugins with a larger fan-base. And if those plugins work on your ps3, you could have free calling from your ps3 to any LAN line, or Mobile within the U.S. and Canada!

I switched to Chrome because Firefox had some serious issues. One of the most frustrating was when I tried to boot Firefox and I got a pop up saying that the program was already in use when it wasn't. I find chrome to be quicker and more reliable. Glad PS3 will be adopting it but I never use my PS3 to browse. Why do that when I have a PC?

This could be that Google x Sony thing I've been talking about for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if they linked Gmail with your PSN, or Google ended up adding Google Talk in place of Cross-Game chat. Where you could even chat with friends if they're on their GMAIL on PC.

Who knows, maybe we'll even get a Youtube app directly to the PS3's XMB. Making it infinitely easier to search things and upload videos to Youtube from the PS3 (since we do have a poor mans video editor on the PS3 already).

I'm expecting to see/hear something at, or slightly after, E3 about this partnership of a lifetime. That would be a big +1 for Sony over the competition.
