Orange - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Review

Orange - Any developer would be ecstatic to have the Castlevania licence to play with. With the freedom to make a game that breaks from the series’ traditions and story where it wants, while having the rich history and huge catalogue at its fingertips, MercurySteam had the chance to make an awesome tribute to this much-loved classic. Yet while Lords of Shadow begs, borrows and outright steals from a ton of famous games, Castlevania is not one of them.

"Where, though, are the item collecting, map exploration and multi-layered puzzles of Castlevania? Where is the music? Where is the deep story? Where is the legacy of the Belmont family, forever destined to defeat Dracula? It’s just not there."

"It’s not a Castlevania game, though, so if that’s what you’re looking for you’ll be disappointed."

Wait, where's the Lords of Shadow review?

Edit: Oh wait there it is.

"It’s not a terrible game. Those environments really are impressive despite not being as explorable as you’d like them to be. There is a strong magic system where you can follow the paths of light or shadow to develop your character – and when you’re not facing a relentless onslaught of underworld creatures, the puzzles can be quite engaging. "

It really explains the 7/10. Or not. This isn't reviewing a game, this is crying because it isn't like the old Castlevania games and giving a score without explaining it.

-Mezzo-4947d ago

Agreed, i am really enjoying this game myself, i would give it a Solid 9/10.

HolyOrangeCows4947d ago (Edited 4947d ago )

Orange review? Now there's a review I can get behind.
/lol

OH look guys! Here come the "Bu bu its fun so u can't criticise it at all" people. And the chaser....people who think every decent game is a 9 or 10.

gamer20104947d ago

@HollyOrangeCows

No, but it's like if a reviewer gave Uncharted 2 a 7, would you stand behind that? I wouldn't. Uncharted 2 is another game that is clearly not a 7 or 8 type game.

That's what hearing such low scores and negative reviews for CLoS is like for many of us. It does not compute.

Playing the game and then trying to imagine anybody giving it a 7 is just mindboggling.

lastdual4947d ago (Edited 4947d ago )

I'm really enjoying the game, but right now I'd probably give it an 8/10.

The constant invisible walls and inconsistent camera do drag it down a bit. Still an awesome game, but I almost wish it got pushed back, because if it just had that little extra layer of polish, this could have been a GOTY contender.

PrinceOfAnger4947d ago

Personally I would give it a 10/10 this game is a must buy.

I got this game on friday and its absolutely amazing iv pumped loads of hours into it and im only on chapter 5! I dunno why people are crying over some aspects of this game its AT LEAST a 9/10 its a truly fantastic Castlevania game the best 3D edition of Castlevania IMO loving every second of it

Boody-Bandit4947d ago (Edited 4947d ago )

7/10 for this game is a injustice not deserved.
Yes this game has some issues with frame rates and camera angles but most games in this genre suffer from those issues. This game graphically is a stone cold 10, period. This is coming from a person that was about to take the game out and move on after the first chapter. I stuck it out and really started to hit my stride by the 3rd chapter. When I got to the 4th I was blown away! It only got better and better from there on out.

This games only flaw was the fixed camera angle was troublesome at times, that's it. This game is easily one of the most fun games I have played this generation. The graphics are definitely some of the best visuals I have seen.

The story? Are you kidding me. Please just stop. It seems that people are just looking to find fault with this title. This game is beautiful and Mercury put a ton of effort into this game. It's a shame it is not getting the crediti it deserves.

The ending was fantastic! I started over right away. I didn't leave the controller. I am already on chapter 3 on my 2nd play through. Fantastic game.

GiantJedi4947d ago

In a way I agree with those points but at the same time I don't...hmmm

NinjaAssassin4947d ago

This review is so pathetic. It's one thing if you try to lie about a game before it is out and gamers don't know better, but quite another when you blatantly lie about a game when gamers have already had the chance to play it.

It has a huge amount of things in common with older Castlevania games. It's almost like he didn't even play it.

But you know, even if it didn't have much in common with older Castlevania games, it would still be a pitiful way to review a reboot like Castlevania.

Castlevania is one of the best games of the year and is easily a 9+ game. Personally I would give it a 9.5

I think the biggest flaws of this game is the camera views and platforming.

This game could have done without the platforming.

bustamove4947d ago

Yeah, I'm watching a playthrough of it. The guy complained about the platforming and camera angles.

ChronoJoe4947d ago

What?

Without platforming this game would be... ugh... horrible... O_O

I mean unless you mean taking out exploration too... as exploration without platforming is uh, boring. But then all you have is a god of war/dmc ish game... that's not Castlevania.

I don't like your vision for castlevania a all! :(

mirroredderorrim4947d ago

Castlevania was always a platforming game. I guess you have only been gaming since the 3-D era?

Eamon4947d ago

mirror, that's pretty stupid logic there.

We're talking about this particular title. Not the old 3D or 2D games.

This is a reboot as well. The platforming is painfully tedious and annoying. If the climbing was as fluid as Prince of Persia/Assassin's Creed/Uncharted then it would be less annoying.

The hack and slash is pretty decent. I like the strategy of using light and dark magic to your advantage. But the platforming is pretty lame.

ChronoJoe4946d ago

What's wrong with it? I don't get it.

Played fine to me... I mean it's just the method of exploration within the Castlevania universe. I mean I know gabreil isn't that agile when it comes to manuvering himself around, but I really liked that.

It gives the game a sense of mortality, and changes the atmosphere... Not like god of war, where I never really felt any significance of the heights and whatnot... on Castlevania I found myself fearing for Gabreils life, alot. The sense of scale came across as much greater when the main character isn't an unstopable demi-god.

I enjoyed the sense of always being eager to see what was around the next corner, too. Don't get that in most games but got that in castlevania, so it was fun climbing up structures and whatnot to find secret rooms etc.

I have the game it is a solid 9 game ,it is one of the best action adventure games this Gen ,this game can become a movie because the story is so good

buy the game or rent it to see for yourself ,

the demo does not do this game justice

NinjaAssassin4947d ago

I honestly can't understand why some review sites are being so unfair towards this game. It's like they have an axe to grind with it. This game in every single way--from combat, to exploration, platforming, narrative and graphics--is easily a 9+ game. These reviewers giving it 7s are out of their flipping minds.

What the hell is up with the intense bias against this game? Did Mercury Steam somehow piss off those game sites?

Castlevania Lords of Shadow for me is one of the best games I have ever played.

DarK-SilV4947d ago

I swear to god I am absolutely shocked by some reviewers, how can they score this game very low, yes a 7 is a low score for this game,

it just boggles my mind of how this industry works, Mercury Steam did a great job on this game, just the sheer variety in the lush environments should give this game a free pass

They problem is when you knock a game you knock the developers and we may not see another game from them because of Stupid people like this http://ps3.ign.com/articles...

Unicron4947d ago

""Where, though, are the item collecting, map exploration and multi-layered puzzles of Castlevania? Where is the music? Where is the deep story?"

Item collecting I can understand.
Map exploration? Most CV's were linear.
Multilayered puzzles? Ummm... what?
Deep story? Again... ummm what?

Have people actually PLAYED the full CV series?

mirroredderorrim4947d ago

Castlevania always had a small back-story to the games, but was largely carried through by the gameplay, while in this day and age, the story is carrying you right there with the gameplay, given new technology, more storage... CastleVania needed to evolve, but I would rather see what IGA does with it.

Still, Mercury Steam has done a nice job refining 3-D CastleVania into something more befitting than the previous games. (I love the previous games, though. They have their charms)

metalanime4947d ago

definitely underrated, great game, not even that deep into it. Didnt know that uncharted invented lush forests.

Looking Back to 2010 and the Gothic Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Edgar writes: "To celebrate the game's 10th anniversary, let's take a look at the gothic world of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow."

Although being linear, which I wish it wasn't, the first game was absolutely incredible. A mix of old school God of War meets Date's Inferno; I was highly impressed by this title. I heard the sequel was trash so I ever played it but I think LoS was a good example of how a 3D CV game could be.

rgraf771298d ago (Edited 1298d ago )

I was very happy the game was Linear as I hate exploring. The first game was one of my all time favorites and the 2nd game was a total letdown with the lame hub system and stealth sections. Playing in current times sucked too. I wish they would make a remaster of part 1.

magdiellima1298d ago

Good as a game but terrible as a Castlevania. The sequence was even worse.

Terry_B1298d ago

It is a great game, but just like DMC is not a Devil May Cry..this one was not a Castlevania :-)

FreeckyCake1297d ago

Give Castlevania to Igarashi team, and they will nail it as they did with Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness.

Terrifyingly Bad: A Look Back At the 3D Castlevania Games

If you decide to play a Castlevania game, make sure it's in 2D. Unfortunately, the series has never been able to make the jump from 2D to 3D successfully. Publisher Konami has tried. Six times in fact, but whether trying to build it in-house or with a third party developer, they never captured the essence of the series or make a good game for that matter. So just to be sure you know what to look out for, here are the six 3D Castlevania games that have been made.

isarai1655d ago

I loved the hell out of lords of shadow, lords if shadow 2 had its moments but just didnt leave as much of an impact on me as the first did, still loved it though. They are both great games IMO, maybe not the best "Castlevania" games but great games in their own right.

RememberThe3571654d ago

Yeah that first game was legit good. Really wish they hadn't taken a step back for the second, this series really looked great in 3D.

AK911654d ago (Edited 1654d ago )

According to one of the former devs of Mercury Steam the higher ups kept interfering with the sequel to the point where the game was nothing like what the dev team had envisioned for the sequel so we got the mess that was Lords of Shadows 2.

PhoenixUp1655d ago

I enjoyed Lament of Innocence and Lords of Shadow. They were entertaining titles and I wouldn’t mind trying Lords of Shadow 2 on PS Now.

Just because a game isn’t GOTY worthy does not mean it’s not worth playing. You could do a lot worse than those exceptional titles.

Abcdefeg1654d ago

Curse of darkness was ahead of its time

Hedstrom1654d ago

I really liked lament of innocence and Lords of shadow! Havent tried the other 3d games. But ive played most of the 2d games!

gangsta_red1654d ago (Edited 1654d ago )

I don't know why Castlevania: Lament of Innocence gets a bad rap. It was one of the best in the series at that time and really was a compliment to the Devil May Cry 3rd person style of action that was getting popular at that time.

I rented it on a fluke and was seriously surprised on how good it was. So much so I went out and bought a used copy of Curse of Darkness and instantly returned that trash.

The problem with Nintendo 64 games is they all tried to mimic the Mario/Zelda 64 style of gameplay and how could they not with that whacky ass N64 controller. Almost every game outside of Nintendo's own felt horrible and incomplete.
