Gamenoob: Crackdown 2 Review

Crackdown 2 is the same as Crackdown 1. This is the statement that echos throughout other reviews. Thing is, they say it like it's a bad thing. It isn't, not one bit. Sure, as it's a sequel I think everyone expected a lot more fundamental changes, but being the same isn't all bad. Sure Pacific City is almost the same 10 years on, and sure the Agency still has to combat gangs, specifically Cell in Crackdown 2, but there's enough new things to add to all the old that made the first game such a hit that you won't care if Crackdown 2 isn't new or not, you'll just be too busy having fun.

I think this game is similar to the first, but with added extra features, such as the 'freaks' and the renegade orbs. If you liked the first crackdown, you'll LOVE the second... everything that was good from the first game is in the second and has improved! and it looks stunning now!

maybe only a dozen people on n4g, including myself, have actually played the retail release of crackdown 2. maybe only a dozen people including myself actually played the retail release of lost planet 2, another game that got sh*t on. ditto for alan wake.

i may make alot of off handed remarks but i never truly sh*t on a game without trying it for myself.

I played the first and it was pretty good. Then I played the demo for the second one and it played exactly like the first one. Gameplay and graphics had no real noticeable changes. That wouldn't really be a problem if this game was being sold at a lower price like an expansion pack or something. It's a shame because the first one was really a good game.

Wow..a review that rewards a game for actually being FUN. I am blown away. I must be one of the few who actually still plays games for fun. Crackdown 2 is pure fun.

i'm not going to support the practice of companies like MS throwing out a rushed, under-developed sequel to a franchise that deserved SO MUCH MORE.

Crackdown 1 was incredibly fun. yes, collecting orbs is fun, but so is leveling up your weapons and getting new armor in the Ratchet series.

at least the Ratchet games added new locales, new weapons, different method of upgrading, and a new story.

Crackdown 2 is, almost literally, Crackdown 1, and not even given a new coat of paint.

i expected:

1) New location. a lot of the fun of open world games is discovery. a new environment is full of surprises and new secrets to uncover. CD 2 robs us of that by setting it in the same city as the first, with a few moderations to some of the areas. location also helps to break that feeling of "didn't i DO this already in the last game?" exploring areas in CD 2 have more than just a little feeling of De Ja Vu.

2) New abilities. I mean more than just a glide suit. in CD 1, you could already jump, sprint, pick up and throw objects, shoot things, etc, i'd have liked to have seen that really expanded beyond just a few new weapons, more vehicles (which, really, isn't a selling point, i only got in a car when i didn't feeling like leaping and bounding to a location, which was rare)and a glide suit.

3) New objectives. the core of CD wasn't broken. it reminded me of Mercenaries, but with "super powers." that made it awesome. i fricking LOVED taking out the Crime Lords and devising plans, having that plan fail or backfire, then coming up with a newer, more ridiculous plan to take them out. protecting beacons and fighting hordes of zombies is fun for a few missions, but after a while, it gets dull. i'd have liked more variety in missions in Crackdown 1 to be honest, but i overlooked those issues, because it was a new IP, and had room to grow. i eagerly awaited the sequel to CD 1. i just KNEW the sequel would build upon the solid foundation of the first CD. i was wrong.

i'm not going to make excuses for Crackdown 2 because Ruffian was given less than a year to complete a game.

Microsoft OWNS the Crackdown IP. why the rush? it's not like they didn't have a solid lineup this year with ME 2, SC: Conviction, and Alan Wake released, with Fable 3 and Halo: Reach on the way soon. did they REALLY need Crackdown 2 right now?

they could have given Ruffian until Q1/Q2 2011. instead, they were too busy looking over their shoulders at Sony's packed lineup, and trying to match it, with only 7 internal studios vs Sony's 19.

maybe Crackdown 3 will be better, but i'll just wait on that one. as a fan of the franchise (just like i'm a fan of Fable, and keep giving Molyneux chances to FINALLY produce the Fable he's been talking about making sense Fable 1), i'm willing to give the franchise a chance to improve.

i'm not giving Microsoft $60 for this half assed attempt at cashing in on a promising brand. don't turn into Activision, MS. one of them is already too much.

The trouble with Crackdown 2 is that it doesn't do much over the first one. 4 player co-op is probably the only distinctive thing. It just seems like a rushed rehash and with all the great games out now, it doesn't deserve my money.
