AMD's Ian McNaughton blasts NVIDIA over PC Game Issues

GizmoGamer.com reports "AMD's very own self-proclaimed bad boy Ian McNaughton took a direct swing at NVIDIA and The Way it's Meant to be Played program today in a blog post that is worth taking a look at. Ian calls out some issues with several TWIMTBP titles, which is something you don't see being done everyday. If you already own or are thinking about getting Batman: Arkham Asylum, Need for Speed: Shift or Resident Evil 5 then you might want to see what Ian is upset about."

Well apparently when Nvidia whines about AMDATi's unfair advantages it's news?

There's some fair things in here too, like anti-competitive strategies that Nvidia is starting up again.

Jdoki5337d ago

Nvidia seems happy to throw million in to the The Way It's Meant To Be Played scheme just to ensure an unfair advantage. As a business strategy it's brilliant - but as a customer I find it deplorable.

I have always been unbiased when it comes to GPU's (I buy whichever make/brand is the best I can afford at the time) - but since the whole 8 series debacle by Nvidia (which ranks up there with MS denying the RRoD issue) I have been favouring ATI much more.

My current rig uses a 4890, and although I know I'm missing out on some of the nicer PhysX effects I can't see me moving back to Nvidia while it continues underhand tactics and launches broken products (I have a laptop runing an 8 series GPU that I purchased before finding out about the substrate fault that is plaguing these GPU's)

BTW, I'm not saying AMD/ATI are above these sort of tactics - just that right now Nvidia is doing everything they can to push me away as a potential customer.

Chris3995337d ago (Edited 5337d ago )

For the price-point and performance ratio alone, it $hits all over any Nvidia product I have ever owned. Not to mention that the last 9 series card I owned would not save any settings that I made in the control panel - I tried everything from a system wipe and full install to exchanging cards, with NO success.

I am an ATI fan and buyer for the foreseeable future.

DiffusionE5337d ago

I have absolutely no use for the 3D-Vision or w/e crap that Nvidia is employing on RE5. And I find that delaying Batman-AA(PC) for PhysX is completely unnecessary. However, I had some strange issues with ATI cards on certain games, so I've decided to remain an Nvidia user until I find that the GTX-380 is a total crap. Then, I'll switch to ATI.

Kakkoii5337d ago

GTX 380 shall not be crap. It shall be epic. check it out:

I have the same card and it kicks 4ss. I have always used ATi and they are great cards. The one exception was a 6800gt I had and it sucked.
Ran hot, and was loud as hell to the point were I had to install my own cooling.
Ati has better AA and better colour. FACT .
That is why 360 graphics and colours look more vibrant and brighter than ps3, Sony went with Nvidia and now have the good old slightly washed out look to their games.I'm telling you, Nvidia 'cooks' the benchmarks so their sh1t looks good, and blow tons of money on advertising etc, truth is, the Ati equivalent card is always cheaper and better and runs cooler and quieter.
So then Nvidia usually panics and then rush out a 'better' card, that runs even hotter, louder, and takes even more power......

screw Nvidia

iLoki5337d ago (Edited 5337d ago )

You do realize that both nvidia and ati provide their own tools for tweaking PC color settings? (I'll be the first to tell you I am an nVidia fanboy, but I value performance above brand name.. believe me if GTX300 tanks I will jump on the 5870 or 5870x2 without a second thought) ATI has different AA methods, which are better, in YOUR opinion. That doesn't make it fact. I actually prefer nvidia's AA methods, not to mention little to no performance drop for 4xMSAA on my setup.

As for being colors being "Washed out" on the PS3 vs the 360... do you own either console? Both? If you did you would realize that the way the systems process color is a little different, I do agree that some games do look a little washed out on the PS3 but those are few and far between. By the way this is a problem that generally plagues multi platform games, because the XB360 is easier to develop for, so the PS3 gets short end of the stick, and gets the majority of the ports. This is an almost immediate downgrade in quality with most things it seems... even if very minor, graphical differences.

Look at the PS3 exclusives, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank... All have incredibly vibrant colors.

The PS3 has what's basically a beefed up 7900GTX, most of its processing is done through the cell before its passed to the GPU for actual rendering. Im not sure what AMD/ATi's chip in the 360 would be equivalent to.. maybe a 3870 or a little better?

The point is it's really not fair to lay down a blanket statement like that... its just not true in that broad a scope.

Nvidia's not really "blowing" their money if its working for them are they? ATI has not tried to compete with nvidia on terms of performance. They didn't WANT to be faster. They wanted to be a better value for performance. Which they achieved. the 4870 was direct competition to the GTX260, where it did well. The 4870X2 was more competition for the GTX280 at the time (and was faster), and was beaten later by the GTX295. The 4890 is direct competition for the GTX275.

Nvidia's cards are faster at the top end, that is fact. When nvidia's competition for the 5870 comes out, we will see if this holds true. As an nvidia fanboy I'm hoping it is, but as a consumer I want them to be close, because it means cheaper prices for everyone. ATi is still the underdog, but thats changing more and more with every generation of graphics that come out. The 5870 is a MASSIVE jump over the HD4000 series. It would seem that even ATI's drivers are finally maturing, my dad just upgraded to the latest drivers/CCC and all of the common issues he was having disappeared. Whether ATi "wins" this generation or not, they are definitely putting some pressure on nvidia, which can only be a good thing in the end. (Either they fall apart and ATI takes the lead back, or Nvidia comes out with a faster product, which makes ATI come out with their X2 or 5890 all while driving prices down to stay competetive)

chak_5337d ago

That's unfair. Might be childish, but he's right. I'm super happy with my 4890 o/c edition, which was 190€ a few mont back, compared to those 280/285 ermm

Resident Evil 5 - 15 Years of Being the Most Misunderstood Resident Evil

Resident Evil 5 launched 15 years ago today - and it continues to stand as a stepping stone from the good to the bad.

TheBrainZ66d ago

One of my favourites because of the co-op. Then Resi 6 arrived and the series nosedived further.

Knightofelemia66d ago

I enjoyed the game co-oping with a friend I know the game in solo the AI can be an idiot but RE5 is way better then RE6. I played RE6 with a friend if it wasn't cheap when I got I would have avoided RE6.

thesoftware73066d ago (Edited 66d ago )

5 was excellent, still play Mercs with my brother.
I would love a fully remastered RE:5, with some added, reworked content. The DLC for 5 was also excellent.

6 was awful.

CrimsonWing6966d ago

I never understood why the game was misunderstood. It was a fantastic game at launch and is still fun today to play. It’s as action packed as Resident Evil 4 was, yet that’s regarded a masterpiece 🤷‍♂️

chobit_A5HL3Y66d ago

it was "misunderstood" because they introduced co-op into the franchise at a time when people loved to have fake rage about co-op. like, you could play the game as a solo experience, but people chose to have their bandwagon rage because it was cool at the time lol

-Foxtrot65d ago (Edited 65d ago )

What the hell are you talking about? Fake Rage? Bandwagon? Come on.

You can play it solo but you are forced to carry around a shitty AI partner you have to micro manage. It wasn't as fun solo.

Co-op sucked all the horror, tension and suspense from the game because having a partner covering you was like a safety net. Enemy trying to sneak up on you? No sweat the AI will just automatically lock on, alert you while they shoot first telling you where they are basically.

It was the start of Capcoms fall with the Resident Evil series where it basically become an over the top generic action game which betrayed it's own survival horror roots. Least RE4 had a good blend of both but Capcom just went the wrong way with RE5, especially going off what they were going to do during the RE4.5 beta phase before co-op was added.

franwex65d ago

At least the game was a ton of fun tho. If the game was bad, the outrage would’ve been justified. They simply pivoted for a couple of games. At this point it’s bad because it’s called Resident evil 5? But if was called something else it would’ve been good? Please.

chobit_A5HL3Y64d ago

like i said: fake baby rage and bandwagon hate. res4 wasn't really that scary, either, and was already taking the series into more of an action-oriented direction at the time. 5 was a good game that people fake-hated because of co-op that you didn't even have to play lol hence the fake rage and bandwagon hate. i mean, it obviously did well enough for capcom to go ahead and make 6 the way they did, right? if 5 was so bad, they would have changed what 6 was during development. the difference is that 6 was actually just bad.

people "hate" 5 because res4 was so good, and 5 was just unfortunate enough to be its successor. like i said, 4 wasn't scary, either, and relied more on tension than horror, but it was already more of an action game. if you don't wanna like 5 because it's not scary or whatever- that's fine, but it wasn't meant to be strictly a horror game anymore at that point anyways. the gameplay was a lot faster-paced than 4, so saying that the ai helping you by potentially shooting someone that was sneaking up behind you is a moot point. there were more enemies that were more aggressive, along with newer threats.

5 isn't as good as 4, but it's not a bad game by any stretch.

RNTody40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

What? I always thought RE5 had fake controversy because it was set in South Africa and you shot a bunch of black zombies. I live in South Africa and thought the game was absolutely awesome, played the whole thing co-op with my brother.

@Foxtrot I think you're confusing the garbage Dead Space 3 with Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 was already a hyper action game and had zero fear factor other than the grotesque appearance of some enemies.

Remake of Resident evil outbreak as well as file 2. Same gameplay as the recent remakes. Choose what ever character you want to play as. With online co op.

DarXyde224d ago

I've been dying to see Outbreak come back for years.

Even RE Zero and Code Veronica would be excellent.

But for the love of God, not RE5 or RE6.

One they get around to the aforementioned games, why not remake the original Devil May Cry trilogy? That would be a much better use of time. At the very least, the first two games.

justsomeoffdude225d ago (Edited 225d ago )

code veronica should be the nest remake

neutralgamer1992225d ago

CV is good candidate for a remake but requires way more work for today’s standard. People look at CV through their tinted glasses. I think capcom wants to remake every game up till 6 and fix the plot holes so they can continue the series in one straight story path

Also not sure why only RE have to get remade when there are other capcom games that would be better suited for remakes like oninusha

DVAcme225d ago

That's PRECISELY the reason Code Veronica needs a remake. All the other RE games aged pretty well, considering the limitations of the time, but Code Veronica is the game that would be served the best bybremaking it because it feels so archaic these days.

neutralgamer1992225d ago

DVA

But it depends if capcom wants a big project or a quick remake. CV will require a lot more work than RE5

IMO they should remake other games before doing RE5

TheEnigma313225d ago

how many times do we have to say CV is the next best one?

CrimsonWing69225d ago

Nooooo! Why the hell can’t they do Code Veronica? I just don’t understand.

1Victor225d ago

RE5 is the closest to the bottom of the pot(a little smoky flavor but passable in a emergency) before we get to the burned crust that is 6 that not even the pigs would eat

CrimsonWing69225d ago (Edited 225d ago )

Unpopular opinion here, but I enjoyed 5 and 6. I just think, in terms of Remakes, the classics are the one that should get the treatment above the modern takes of the franchise.

Don’t get wrong, RE4 definitely was an outstanding Remake, but RE5… I just get less excited about a Remake for that over something like Code Veronica.

RaidenBlack225d ago

Nope.
Rather remake other past Capcom & non-mainline RE games ... IF they have to continue churning out Remakes.
I'd rather want a new 3rd person RE spin-off
Dino Crisis and Onimusha Reboot
New IPs after Pragmata ships
