MGF writes: "The Top Gun film is a classic and it seems a little bit late to bringing out a game of the film (although that didn't stop them with Shooter which was a year out of sync). The developers have neatly fast forwarded the action with Maverick and Iceman now promoted to instructors at the Top Gun Academy. You are now the recruit defending from the skies from Commies (are they still a threat?).
There are some dodgy interludes between the levels that set the plot up but this is all about the flying action so we'll gloss of the dodgy art. The action itself is very fast and pretty difficult. Tilting controls the plane and thanks to a very nifty recalibration system, there should be no complaints about the controls from anybody. In your fighter plane, the left button shoots your cannon/machine gun and the right fires your air-to-air missiles (once you've locked on to the target). Flying through the skies is a breeze as is locking on and dispatching the targets. When they choose to fire missiles back at you (which they will in their droves), sections of the screen will fill with 'Danger zone'. Basically the screen is split into nine danger zones. When one of these flash up it's time to ride out of the danger zone before it turns red and say hello to their missile. The game starts off steadily enough but by level 5 the whole screen is practically filled and you have navigate through the orange danger zones to safety. Your aircraft can take 7 or 8 hits before it will crash but some of the levels are very long and it can be tricky. If you are brave or stupid, bonus points can be won for staying in the danger zones."
