Burnout Paradise Remastered studio teases series revival

Stellar Entertainment is working on a fresh AAA arcade racing title, and not-so-subtly hinting it could be a new Burnout.

I hope it’s not another open world snore fest. Burnout 3 was the pinnacle of the series with tight and focused events that didn’t have you pausing to look at a map every 10 seconds.

Totally agree I loved the series then Paradise killed it for me. It was well made but I didn't like it at all. It's the perfect game for simply choosing a race from a list, an open world slows momentum and is a waste of resources.

I loved the hell out of Paradise. Some of the most fun I've had playing with friends, and with the amount active lobbies when it was around, some people liked it. It's not gonna be the same game with every entry forever. Things change. And you honestly can't single out that game as the downfall of the series when we all know EA franchises and studios are always on the chopping block.

Yeah, gotta disagree with you, paradise was actually a fun open world game in a world full of boring open worlds, the online integration was good, the vehicle variety, the road variety, music, the crashes, using the camera to take mugshots! 🙈
That's not saying I wouldn't like a Burnout 3 style game, I'd still enjoy that too but wouldn't mind another open world if they did it right like they did with paradise

Did anyone want the map though? Did it push the series forward or kill it? It was the last Burnout game so maybe that answers that question.

Absolutely can’t get into Paradise. Have it on multiple platforms and it’s just cumbersome compared to the originals. I want to come home, jump into a few events, and as soon as one is completed, pick another one from a menu immediately. Nice and tight, no filler.

Nah 2 was the pinnacle. The takedown mechanic slowed down the gameplay too much.

Agreed. Burnout 2, 3 and Revenge were simply amazing games. Put so much time into them... Paradise was a fun game, for sure. But it definitely lost a lot of the magic when it transitioned to open world.

You can still play Burnout Revenge on Series S/X via backwards compatibility. Still available on the Xbox Store.
Strangely, Burnout 3 isn't backwards compatible.

The gaming world desperately needs an arcade racing saviour.

A new Burnout with a crazy damage system and maybe world destruction would be unbelievable.

And really innovative closed circuits like pre-Burnout Paradise , but with track evolution and tons of different environments. Could be awesome !

It will not:
- be made by genius working with passion, resulting in best of the best arcade driving model and track design
- be the definition of next-gen visuals like Burnout 2, 3, Dominator were for PS2
- have good meal riffs music, and neat dynamic elements (slow speed = one music, fast = different music)
- have the visuals truly faithful to what classic arcade gaming was (1990s, early 2000s). They will make it realistic, surely, for no freaking reason whatsoever, and with tha, gone will be both clarity allowing for tight gameplay, and the arcade joy of having very vibrant colors, but not going onto infantile territory. Burnout Paradise lost that already. It was needlessly grey and boring. Arcade racing should have that superblue sky and water, shiny car reflections, crisp and vibrant image
- be focused on single player. Open world is NOT a welcomed nor useful thing in arcade racers. We've had open world in everything, we're fed up with this and we'd rather have great tracks designed by hand. This also allows for much better visuals, and gameplay like Burnout 2, where you had to spend time to learn the position of every car on the cross-section etc. - it was not realistic, but IT WAS FUN once you finally start clocking those 11x chain boost combos :)
- have support for steering wheels. Burnout 2 + CRT TV 60Hz + Logitech Driving Force = 10/10 and an arcade experience that hasn't been matched yet. Which is just horrible considering it was 22 years now.
- all the good stuff that's not trendy now, but is good for fun factor in arcade games - unrealistic but FUN engine sounds, also fun regardless of the camera the player uses, and sliders to tone down crashes and other sound effects, but separate slider for engine sound, so the player can pump that bass up to FEEL the engine roar. Also, infinite gear shifts. I really don't want to hear the constant aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa when at max speed. I don't care about realism. Give me most of the fun I can get from the engine sound. Even if it means I hear accelerating and upshifting while my speedometer holds the same number.
- VR support. 120Hz, 3D, bumber cam. Star Wars E:1 Racer and Burnout 2 were the last two games that took the sense of speed to another level. Without VR's field of view, razor sharp motion, 120fps and stereoscopic 3D, there's nothing you can do to present anything substanially better than what we've had 20 years ago.

Basically, the big dev teams like 2000-2005's Criterion, Bizarre, Evolution Studios or Naughty Dog - are NOT developing AAA racing games anymore. No team with such a huge potential (geniuses, mostly geniuses) wants to focus their efforst on a genre so neglected and so forgotten.

Sadly. Cause with right conditions (super clear motion represantation is a MUST for arcade racers!), this genre would regain the popularity. I'm sure about that.
It's not a coincidence that arcade racers were loved through 1980s till early 2000s. This is when shitty LCDs came in, and CRTs were being ruined by "100Hz" tech which basically ruined the motion representation in 50/60Hz games.
One day, when most of displays can handle motion, some stupid corporate suits will be very surprised tha this once long forgotten genre has a rebirth and a huge financial success.
But this may not happen before 2040 or whenever MicroLED HFR displays become mainstream.

In the meantime, we should stop hoping for a big, true Burnout. It is not happening. Gaming industry is sadly way different to what it was in 2002, when the king of all arcade racers descended from Heaven. Praise be Burnout 2. Amen.
