Just Press Play Review: Combat Wings: Battle of Britain

JPP writes: "With WWII being such a hot market as well as an easy market to sell things off to gamers, it has been done on the ground so often I think we all have flashbacks at this point. In Combat Wings: Battle of Britain(BoB) you are taken from the fields of battle into the skies of WWII. While many games have done this they have left a stone unturned where city interactive has decided to pick up. In this game you protect the Queens lands of Britain against the Nazi's Luftwaffe of yesteryear. With the RAF at your disposal will this game excel your expectations and give you some wonderful dogfights? Or will it just ruin WWII for you and force you to watch the History channel over and over to increase your knowledge of aerodynamics?"

Gamepyre: Combat Wings - Battle of Britain Review

Gamepyre writes: "First person shooters and RTSs (real time strategy) games have dominated the World War II genre.

Although not new per say, but starting with WWII, airplanes have changed the way that warfare has been conducted for the last fifty years or so. Few and far in between, new aviation games released each year can be counted on your fingers thus I will not miss a chance to play and review a flying game."

DreamStation: Combat Wings: Battle of Britain Review

DreamStation writes: "This is a flight simulation game, intermixed with abilities of a shooter style. It is set in the World War II era. Published by City Interactive it is a sequel to Combat Wings. In this version , Battle of Britain, you are the newest pilot to the squadron tasked to defend England from the onslaught of the German Luftwaffe. I personally had a lot of fun with this game. You start off learning the basics of the interface with flight, firing, and dropping munitions. But do not get too cozy because you are quickly tasked with a lot of short missions."

IGN: Combat Wings: Battle of Britain Review

IGN writes: "Like most of the budget-priced games we've seen from Polish developer City Interactive, Combat Wings: Battle of Britain is decidedly imperfect. In this case, that imperfection manifests itself by way of erratic controller support, questionable design decisions, and a ridiculously tiny game manual. However, it's otherwise a darned enjoyable game and certainly City Interactive's finest air combat effort to date.

Make no mistake: this is an arcade look at air combat and as such likely won't impress anyone schooled in hardcore simulations where merely landing or equipping your plane with appropriate weaponry involves thought and practice. But – and this is the important part – it's quite simply a lot of fun. It looks great, it feels just realistic enough that you'll know you're in a World War II-era aircraft, and it offers so much action and keeps you so busy that you'll barely have time to digest all the insults coming your way from your trash-talking Nazi foes."
