Microsoft's quest for short-term $$$ is doing long-term damage to Windows, Surface, Xbox, and beyond

Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's plans to increase every department's margins.

"The plan to move Xbox games to other platforms is codenamed "Latitude" internally, and I know there's debate and unease at Microsoft about whether or not this is a good idea. More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. At least for now, they're potentially obvious games you'd most likely expect. And yes, while it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. From what I've heard, Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's mandate to increase every department's margins. "

Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware.

Xeofate2h ago

"Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware."

It's for the best.

Quit stringing along xbox fans and screwing over PlayStation owners.

gold_drake3h ago

i think it will kill off the xbox brand. windows will be fine.

but there is and would be a chance that xbox might be killed off in the future. if they fail to make the money they put in. imo.

S2Killinit58m ago

They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.

shadowT2h ago

"Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation"

Forza and Starfield next?

Skuletor1h ago

Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.

shinoff21831h ago

Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. If starfield and it's a small if does release on ps it'll be in the fall around the time for dlc or right at the dlc and come packaged with it.

-Foxtrot2h ago

In the words of Phil Spencer when he was talking about Nintendo last year

“It's just taking a long time for Microsoft to see that their future exists off of their own hardware"

S2Killinit57m ago

Yup. MS are a cancer to console gaming.

Aloymetal24m ago

100%!!
I wonder what happened to that dude that was always here posting those court articles with cartoons about MS spending all those billions in studios. He suddenly disappeared, I guess he doesn't like bad news when the green brand is in trouble. No new articles from him as of late...

Obscurity1h ago

More fake doom and gloom about a 3 trillion dollar company

shinoff21831h ago

It's probably true though. What's fake about Ms releasing games on ps. It's not like it didn't just happen. 2 of the 4 they released were in Playstations top seller list.

Obscurity1h ago

Xbox has been leaving gaming and leaving hardware for 20 years according to Sony fanboys 😂😂

Hofstaderman1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Bet you Blade is coming to the PS5. Disney probably insisted on it thats why they being silent on whether its exclusive. I'm more excited for the Gears and Master Chief collections though.

Obscurity1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I hope blade does come to PlayStation. Gears and halo should too.

Let PS fans fund Xbox and gamepass. Xbox is dominating the PlayStation store 👏

Good for Ps fans too - PS don’t dev games anymore

0hMyGandhi1h ago

ah yes, the classic "too big to fail" mentality. That served us well in the past.
This article is not all doom and gloom.
I highly suggest you read it before posting a comment here based on the headline alone.

solideagle1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

are you Obscure user's child? or an alt account created today?

it's not doom and gloom for MS, it's for Xbox...Ms will be fine on it's own. when we will look back at the history of Xbox (hardware) from higher level, it will be marked as failure majority of the time.

Obscurity1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

It failed so much they got 69bn dollars to go shopping.

Damn, I wish I could fail so much someone would give me 69bn dollars! 😂😂

-Foxtrot13m ago

They’ve all been him

We must be up to like 20 now

It’s sad…

Skuletor1h ago

A trillion dollar company with a gaming division currently mired with controversy, layoffs, studio closures, an uncertain future, mismanagement and admittance they can't handle all the studios they've acquired among other things. I think the main focus of this news on this site called News 4 Gamers, would be focusing on that gaming division which IS looking kinda gloomy lately.

Obscurity1h ago

Sony are doing all of the above too, despite “record sales”

Obscurity1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Layoffs and studio closures are whataboutism? Okay 😂😂

Imagine selling that many consoles and having to do layoffs at insomniac, your most successful studio 💀💀

Unhealthy business. I’m concerned for PlayStations future.

Skuletor1h ago

More whaboutism. On the topic of Sony, since you brought them up, remind me of when they spent billions on a publisher they later admitted they weren't equipped to manage, despite Phil Spencer saying acquisitions are good for the industry and resulted in mass layoffs and studio closures, even for a studio with one of their highest rated exclusives in years, which according to Microsoft themselves, met their expectations.

Obscurity1h ago

Making that much money and closing studios and doing layoffs.

PlayStation is doomed 💀

Skuletor1h ago

Sure but what makes you think I care if they are?

MS as a company will be fine. Xbox isn’t so secure though, as its status is dependent on how profitable its parent company thinks it is. Current trends suggest that MS sees more profit in making Xbox third party, and I’ve heard the box itself is actually losing them money.

If these things are true, the future of Xbox as a console manufacturer is certainly being called into question. Perhaps being a third party publisher instead would be a better strategy for them.

Obscurity1h ago

Sony and MS are both going third party.

Pc and Steam has killed consoles

Skuletor1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Millions of people are going to choose consoles over a PC due to their simplicity, I don't see consoles disappearing anytime soon.

Aloymetal28m ago

Which makes it more lame and pathetic, a trillion $ company that has the most irrelevant gaming brand on the planet and getting curbed stomp by ''tiny'' Sony's PlayStation;)

Obscurity20m ago

Sony with their 2000937373 console sales and still doing studio closures and layoffs

RIP PlayStation 💀💀

shinoff21831h ago

They gotta do better on the premium side for sure. Where are any of those jrpgs from the ps1 Era. Come on Sony.

jznrpg1h ago

Most of the Sony JRPGS have been released. Square has a ton that could be ported over but they would need Squares involvement.

VenomUK55m ago

Crime Boss! I know it hasn't reviewed well but I love the eighties action movie vibe of the trailer but didn't want to risk any money on it so this is a great way for me to play it.

outsider16241h ago

Looking at this list, i gotta ask what is even the point of premium?

raWfodog1h ago

I'm good with just my PS+ Essential

Abnor_Mal23m ago

G-Police is a game I have fond memories of and will definitely download to replay. I remember controlling your helicopter was a bit difficult and would make my hand cramp having to press all the shoulder buttons to go up and down and I think yaw left and right.

The next game they should add to Classics is Colony Wars, and I wouldn’t mind replaying Nightmare Creatures. I’d also like to replay Black, PSI Ope: The Mindgate Conspiracy.

TheProfessional1h ago

If gamepass is so pointless and unprofitable why did PS shamelessly copy it with Plus extra?

shinoff21831h ago

Psnow was out well before gamepass. To boot most people talking sht about gamepass are talking day 1 releases. That and the fact that Xbox players as a whole aren't buying games like they should be. It's day 1 releases, Sony doesn't do that so you can't compare.

InUrFoxHole1h ago

Aren't buying games like they should be? That's the most company statement I've ever read.

thesoftware7301h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Shin,
While they do talk shit about every aspect of everything MS, including game pass, you just minimized it.

The first claim used to be that "It's all old games" because MS doesn't make new games. I then sit and watch people celebrate games that have been on GP for months/years, being celebrated on PS Plus.

Then when plenty of new good games were hitting regularly, the complaint changed to, the games suck, and the quality of them is bad because of GP.

When that well ran dry, it moved to GP, which is unsustainable and hurting developers.

Then, when MS said it had been making a profit, the goalpost moved again to ownership of games, and GP is driving killing off physical media.

In the meantime, Sony has produced a Digital Playstation and created a robust sub-service that they revamped after seeing the success of GP and admitting their service would not catch up to GP(Sony said it, not me). They also released some games on day 1 in the service. Both companies are doing very similar things, but the less popular brand generally receives the brunt of the negativity.

jznrpg19m ago(Edited 18m ago)

@InUrFoxHole this discussion has been stated many times on this site. Buying games is good for the industry for many reasons, keeps more studios open and helps them to be profitable which they need to be to stay open, it gives us a say in what games we want to play and continue to see and gives us the ability to demand quality with our wallets. If the majority rented , games will end up having lesser quality or be short or both , we will get less games, higher rental prices and studios getting shut down or downsized, more games with Micro-transactions and battle passes to help pay for the lack of people buying the game.
Gaming is a hobby that needs money to stay healthy and the best way to do that is to buy your favorite games and support your favorite studios. I don’t buy all games full price but I do for my favorite studios and favorite types of games because I want more of them in the future. I do buy some games on sale 40-20$ and occasionally cheaper than that but even that is better than a rental.

ChasterMies1h ago

“shamelessly”

These are giant corporations, not Renaissance painters.

MrNinosan1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Maybe collect some braincells before calling yourself TheProfessional.

GamePass copied PSNow, not the other way around.
PSNow later changed name to PS+ Extra and Premium.
What makes GamePass unprofitable is because day 1 games makes gamers stop buying games and the amount of subscribers is too low to make up for it.

You don't need a lot of math knowledge to figure the rest out.

S2Killinit1h ago

Didn’t PSPlus do it first and MS copied. I kind of remember it this way… your comment didn’t age well.

And you seem to be missing the point.

VersusDMC56m ago(Edited 55m ago)

My memory is that playstation started it with the instant game collection which is pretty much what the Monthly games on PS essential is now.

PS now was cloud only and on demand (pay for by hour or day) with no subscription.

MS did the games with gold and gamepass as an awnser to the instant
game collection.

Then PSNow changed to subscription and native downloads(not cloud) like gamepass.

I'm of the mind that gamepass is another version of the instant game collection but i could see people seeing gamepass as the first one to do it in that particular way.

I'm going on memory too so not comited to this timeline.

Eonjay1h ago

Its about Day 1 releases. They don't put game in there day one because they want to get their money back before they give it away for 'free'. This is what the debate boils down to. The reason day one becomes an issues is because in order to make money back on games costing 200+ million to make you would need to either have Plus cost more a month or you would have to have many more subscribers (which is preferable to these companies). Activision was spending somewhere in the range of 4 billion a year to produce yearly COD games. The profit they made a year came in around 1 billion. If the revenue from GP has to also pay for the production cost of COD, it would take many, many decades to see a return on the purchase. That is the issue.

RNTody36m ago

LOLOLOL Comparing a supplementary offering like PS Extra that you don't need to literally the entire point of Xbox and their primary selling point with day one releases of all their main titles. Well done mate for the false equivalence.

Man.... Premium has been a massive letdown but this is the only month they don't have a single thing for me. Oh well. I've gotten my money's worth so far and still need to finish up Rebirth and Rise of the Ronin then I'll hop back in to Relink and Helldivers after that.

Petebloodyonion0m ago

RDR2 is a win for Sony and Crime boss is a good fit to help promote a struggling game
but we're far from what was removed this month (including Horizon Zero Dawn)

Hypercharge Unboxed Dev Saddened By Claims It'll Be 'Dead' Without Xbox Game Pass

One of the big Xbox releases heading our way in May 2024 is the long-awaited Hypercharge Unboxed, which is finally bringing its "first and third-person shooter action figure game" to Xbox consoles on Friday, May 31st.

Sadly, ahead of launch, the game's official Twitter (or "X") account has been highlighting the "trolls" who are claiming that because it's not launching on Game Pass, Hypercharge Unboxed is already set up for failure on Xbox.

helicoptergirl12h ago

It's horrible what people will say, but the truth might be harsh. There is a good chance it might not do well on Xbox if it's not on GamePass. There is a strong possibility that is the case. We'll see.

When it launches on Playstation in the future you can rest assured it will sell much better. The devs have confirmed it's coming to Playstation in the future.

"It is built in the Unreal Engine 4. The game was released on the Nintendo eShop on January 31, 2020 and on Steam on April 27, 2020. The development of Hypercharge: Unboxed for the Xbox platform was officially announced on July 16, 2022, with the developers also confirming future support for the PlayStation."

ZeekQuattro11h ago

I remember having this on my radar years ago for the Switch but never pulled the trigger on it. Crazy it's still not on PlayStation yet.

northpaws2h ago

And that's the problem of GamePass.

JEECE2h ago

Unfortunately once people are conditioned to expect to get something as part of a subscription they already pay for, they are unlikely to buy it a la carte. Some games, including this one, now look like "Gamepass Games" to a huge chunk of the Xbox audience. Maybe this game will buck that trend, and I wish them luck, but I'd imagine they'll have a rough go trying to sell this game on Xbox.

shinoff21831h ago

Hopefully their game not selling on Xbox doesn't stop them from bringing it to ps. I can't imagine why a developer would go Xbox first if their not on gamepass. Good luck to them though.

JEECE1h ago

Yeah I can't figure that out either. I mean I understand why you go there first if you get a Gamepass payday, but if you are just trying to sell copies it doesn't make sense. Fewer users overall, and a smaller percentage of those users are willing to buy indie games a la carte.
