Spider-Man: Miles Morales & Remastered get 40FPS & VRR support in new patches

With the PS5 Variable Refresh Rate update rolling out this week, Insomniac Games has started updating their PS5 games to support the new adaptive sync technology. Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man Remastered have both been updated with new 120Hz and VRR graphics modes.

Here’s the patch notes for both Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man Remastered.

I have a very tv. But it only goes up to 60j not 120hz. So for me it's perfect.

Not every one has a £1000 tv I suppose. This update is a sweet compromise in regards to how theve used the available power. I suspect at 40fps not 60fps they have some power left over for increased draw distance or more effects for example.

andy85758d ago

Tbh you don't even need a TV like that. 120hz monitors are very cheap. Even 4k ones now. I'll look forward to giving this mode a go. Interesting to see how noticeable it will be over the 30 fps mode.

roadkillers757d ago

It’s crazy to me to think someone can’t spent $800 on a good TV, but they can justify a $500 gaming console.

itsmebryan757d ago

@roadkill
I used a new console as the reason to upgrade my TV.. I have an old 82" 1080p DLP TV. Then I bought a Samsung 85" Q80 4K, 120hz, VRR, and HDR for my new console. Only problem after I bought the TV it took me about 8 months to find a new console. But, the improvement over the old TV was huge. So, the wait wasn't so, bad.
The way I see it if you buy a new console for all the bells and whistles that it provides then you got to get a TV that can do everything to justify the purchase. I just have a big den (25'x22')and that is why I went so big.

Tapani757d ago

@itsmebryan

DLP for the win. Fantastic technology.

@roadkill - i cant afford anything these days living in miami so i just have emulators on my pc 🌈

What do you mean why?

It gives more options of playability to more gamers. If you have a 120Hz TV and want to play up to 120 fps you can do it now. If you prefer Fidelity mode Native 4K image and higher graphics settings you can do that as well which use to be 30fps locked, but now if you again have a 120Hz TV you can play it at 40fps which still has even frame pacing on a 120Hz TV since it's divisible, and response time is 25ms instead of 33.3ms making 40fps feel much smoother and closer to 60fps gameplay in motion than being closer to 30fps.

Shane Kim757d ago

Sorry not a tech head. But you mean that with this vrr option, you can play the 4k 30fps mode (ie the graphics mode) but instead of 30fps it will be 40 ?

IRetrouk757d ago

Yes, it can actually hit near 60fps at times.

Shane Kim757d ago

IRetrouk

Wow, that's amazing.

Can't wait to try this out

where-eagles-dare758d ago

Initially, I struggled to get VRR set-up on the PS5 on my compatible LG Oled, I eventually got there in the end. I realised that I was at fault for not applying the settings to my HDMI output with regards to instant game response.

I tested out VRR playing Spider-Man Miles Morales with 120fps ray tracing and initial impressions are extremely positive. Crystal clear picture and incredibly, silky smooth and buttery gameplay. The game moves and feels so much more responsive and quicker to play.

If this is just a taste of things to come, then I'm absolutely over the moon with these new VRR enhancements.

bloop758d ago

Aaahhhh, Instant game response!!

I just had a 5 hour session on Elden Ring while muttering "VRR my ass" the whole time because it's still dropping frames constantly. I turned IGR off because I thought the picture looked a bit harsher. That would explain why I didn't notice any difference with the VRR update 🤦🏼‍♂️ Looking forward to getting back on it tomorrow to see if it made an improvement........ while I have it actually enabled 😣

Levii_92757d ago

I have a Ps5 and Elden Ring is sooo good that i bought it twice.. i bought the ps4 version so i can enjoy 60fps and it was worth it. The next gen versions are so trash without VRR or BC on Ps5.. the framerate is soo painful and annoying.

moomoo319757d ago

I turned on VRR for elden ring, on LG OLED C1. It still drops frames but overall i think its noticeably smoother. I like that it made the picture a little brighter/crisper but i understand if u think its harsh.

bloop757d ago

Good to know moomoo 👍🏻 I look forward to jumping back in tonight. I have a CX and when my PS5 automatically turned IGR on it looked like it had reset all the picture settings to default on my TV. Spent too much time getting my settings the way I wanted them and couldn't bear going through it all again! The TV seems to have really low latency with IGR disabled anyway, so I just turned it off straight away 🤷🏼‍♂️ Didn't realise it needs to be on for VRR.

@Levii: I wouldn't normally be a frame rate whore, but the dropped frames on the PS5 version of Elden Ring are inexcusable. When you look at Forbidden West, probably the most visually stunning game I've ever experienced and running silky smooth, you have to wonder what the hell happened with Elden Ring. The visuals are far from exceptional yet it's dropping frames constantly, which is a real shame as artistically speaking, the designers created a stunning world with some of the best character design I've ever seen. Their engine doesn't do their vision justice.

ABizzel1757d ago

Elden Ring's issue isn't going to be completely solved because the issue stems from the game engine and the bad frame pacing all From Software games have. It helps makes gameplay smoother, but it's not a fix.

SullysCigar757d ago

Yeah, there's a few settings to jump through, depending on your TV.

I'm thinking some will miss out, as they're unsure how to do it (and maybe assume their TV doesn't support it) or they're simply unaware VRR exists. That would be a shame.

I say we should all help the casuals out on this one - friends and family, etc. - make sure they get to benefit!

TimmyTesticles757d ago

Wait you're saying to have the Instant Game Response ENABLED, correct?

I have an LG CX but haven't been able to try the vrr update just yet. And thanks for taking the time to write this!

where-eagles-dare757d ago

Cheers Timmy, I found it quite a tricky & fiddly process at first, as it's not explained very well and 4k TV sets may vary.

I have the same LG Oled.

On PS5 I was going to 'options' then selecting 'Screen and video' I then scrolled down to VRR and selected 'automatic' - I scrolled down one step below and switched on 'Apply to Unsupported Games'

Then I checked the 'Video output information' at the top on the PS5 and frustratingly, it was telling me that VRR was unsupported. This was where I nearly came unstuck and with a bit of luck as well as trial and error, I thought the problem might be due to my TV settings on the LG Oled.

My settings are as follows - I use 'Cinema' for my preferred choice - others may wish to use 'game'

On the LG picture mode settings on the tv scroll down and select 'Additional Settings'

Now scroll down and select 'Instant Game Response'

Now turn it on - in the relevant HDMI input. Ie put the slider to the right etc.

Now if successful when paired with your PS5, when you switch the console on, you should see in the top corner of the screen that 'instant game response' is now enabled.

Now check to see if it's worked on your setup go to 'options' & then go to sound & screen' on the PS5 and check the 'Video output Information' --- it should now say when you look down at VRR -- Supported (48-120Hz) The PS5 supports a VRR range of 48-120 Hz.

I'm not the most tech savvy of chaps but that's how it worked on my set up.

So in summation Timmy, yes is the answer to you question. Hope this in some way helps.

Open world, narrative driven and third person, are not genres

sparky77548d ago

And yet they all play the same, just like Soulsbourne/Metroidvania aren't genres PS games all play exactly the same.

shinoff2183548d ago

Beats racing around a track and playing the newest broken halo. Sony games crush what Xbox has. Easily.

mkis007547d ago

But they dont? God of war plays nothing like days gone plays nothing like ratchet and clank plays nothing like horizon, plays nothing like ghost of tushima, plays nothing like returnal, plays nothing like spiderman. Seriously even if you were to try to compare ghost of tushima to god of war the combat is completely different.

jambola547d ago (Edited 547d ago )

You think God of war plays exactly the same as spiderman?....

Also, Metroidvania is a genre
Open worlds is not
Souldsbourne is a genre
Narrative driven is not

I love these games but bro, you can’t tell me they don’t all feel similar. I own on my ps5 and have played for the last year on ps5: uncharted 4 next gen update, forbidden west, miles morales, both god of wars and the re-release of TLOU and yes, they all feel very similar and all are fresh in my memory. They’re great games and I love them but they are in fact starting to feel formulaic.

darthv72548d ago

They feel formulaic because that was the intention. The PS4 gen was meant to be different than PS3. Which means all the big Sony owned games follow the same core design for big budget, over the shoulder, 3rd person, semi / open world, action / adventure story driven narrative. Each one just takes place in its own environment, feudal japan, post apocalyptic future, norse mythology... you get the idea?

isarai548d ago (Edited 548d ago )

Ill give you tlou and gow, but horizon and Spider-Man? They feel absolutely nothing like any other game, same for R&C and GoT. They all look and feel very distinctly different to me. You're stretching way too hard to try and make this false narrative a thing

shinoff2183548d ago (Edited 548d ago )

Yea I think yall crazy. Each of those games are nowhere near each other. If you want to compare all those games and say they are similar you must just be tired of gaming because almost all games have similar things about them. I think sonys games offer Hella variety

Also I enjoy third person. I'd prefer it over fps anyday

mkis007547d ago

How do any two games not feel formulaic? Im not sure what forbidden west and spiderman have in common.

jambola547d ago

No
In your opinion they're feeling formulaic
If you think God of war, ratchet and clank and spiderman feel tbe same
That's insane

What a sad excuse of a clickbait article.

PS_HCT548d ago

With God of War: Ragnarok being the fastest selling first-party game launch in PlayStation history selling 5.1 million copies, I don't think there is much of a problem.

Snookies12547d ago (Edited 547d ago )

I mean, I do agree with you to a certain extent. But sales really don't mean much when it comes to quality. Granted, GoW Ragnarok is definitely a quality title. Yet, on the other hand. We have the hot mess that Pokemon just released. And from what I hear, it's selling more than any previous Pokemon game. Which always bring in millions, every iteration.

Shane Kim548d ago

I don't really understand the whining. Yes they might play kind of similarly (I don't think so, but to each their own) but Sony's exclusives are like 1% of the gaming library. Would you rather they play just like every third party game out there?

Spider-Man: Miles Morales PC Review | Gaming Nexus

John writes, "With the release of Miles Morales, PC gamers will be able to enjoy both great Spider-Man games if they don't own a PlayStation 4 or 5. The game does need a solid machine, and if you have a NVIDIA Ada Lovelace card, you can unlock some great extra performance. It's a continuation of Marvel's Spider-Man with some new powers and some slightly different enemies, but it's solid and will give fans of the first game more of what was good to begin with."
