Hideo Kojima Says That Video Games Are For Lonely People

Hideo Kojima recently talked about what sort of games he'd like to make, particularly mentioning that video games are for lonely people.

Makes a good point. That's why PlayStation 4's single player experiences dominated so hard in sales. It's also why Halo 5 and Halo Infinite don't even have cooperative play which is widely considered sacrilegious for a Halo game. Mario Party is definitely not the mascot of video games in the 21st century.

Halo Infinite will have splitscreen and online co-op, just not at launch. They delayed the feature because it wasn't working properly, but they say they will have it ready within the first content pack which is up to 3 months.

Halo 5 has 4 player co-op, just online, no splitscreen. Halo Infinite will be getting splitscreen and online co-op after launch around 3 months.

GTA V is by far the best selling ps4 game, and the top 10 is dominated by cod. I would also point out Fortnite is the most played ps4 game. Mind you those single player fans are valuable, many of them buy a lot of games.

I'm a pc gamer and my friend who has a PS4 wanted me to experience some games he loves like Uncharted 4. Thing is, I can't invest myself in the story when I'm at his place. My single player games have the word "single" in it for a reason XD

Read the correction befor you lose your minds people. But even if it wasn't, it doesn't have to a pejorative. Sometimes people go through lonely or hard times in their life, and video games could help you get through them potentially, so long as you remember to seek a way out of your slump as well.

This article is a mess-- and the word "lonely" is misinterpreted and miscontextualized here... "Solitary" or "introverted" might work better--- Immersive singleplayer games like Kojima's are like taking an extended camping trip in the woods by yourself-- the solitude is striking, and gives you so much more mental space to connect with your surroundings-- Its for people who love and desire solitude.

I might characterize more social/co-op games differently-- they scratch a different itch-- (look at the role "Animal Crossing" played in the early pandemic-- that game, at that time, was many peoples' cure for loneliness)-- But this headline/article just discards all nuance for the sake of clicks and insults. thastoobad.

If you are lonely then video games will not fill that void. No matter how good the game is or if you pursue aspects for that demographic. Loneliness probably killed more people than covid in 2020. It’s a real problem and VG are not the problem or cure.
