Next-gen console launches are about more than (a lack of) exclusive games

"I am very excited to get my excessively sanitised hands on an Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 this November, despite the prevailing notion there are no games, making either a foolish purchase, at least according to furious tweeters," writes Ben Salter.

Launch lineups from the past have usually been a mixed bag. This coming generation has had so little info on the full launch titles, it's gotten tiresome.

Yeah it’s kind of annoying but tbh Sony sold me on the PS5 when they announced ratchet and demon souls. Miles morales is gonna be dope to but the other two has me the most hype.

Launch exclusives represents a console makers interest in their own system. Before MS, the Series X, that hasn't needed to be said aloud. It was as just obvious. But looking back what's obvious is MS's diminishing interest in being a game maker. They wanted 3rd party devs to come to them, provide the games, since COD took off and bought exclusive content for GTA.

There's nothing good about that strategy, as the Series X only demonstrates.

Nope. Games is what sells consoles. The one with the best ones sells more.

Yeah. I dont understand why would I want to give my hard earned money to a company that has little intrest in actually making games?

NeoGamer2321324d ago

That is not entirely true.

I would argue that even if XB had a better launch game then spider-man it would sell less.

This is because gamers also select their console based on past performance of the console vendor and as we know Microsoft's past performance is very checkered.

Some are better than none. No kap needed.

There seems to be this prevailing notion that there aren't many launch t tiles for next gen...the ps5 has plenty. Xbox not so much.

SoulWarrior1325d ago

Yeah I'm not sure why PS5 is being lumped in with Xbox here, unlike MS Sony didn't have a super lacklustre showcase recently.

Godmars2901325d ago

Sony is always lumped with MS by the Xbox faithful in order to give "their" console legitimacy.

I really enjoyed this game. It was in my top 3 last year, but it begs the question, why did I make a day 1 purchase? I want to support games/franchises I enjoy by making a full price purchase at release. However, that decision often seems to be the wrong one from a consumer perspective.

It’s no wonder AAA gaming is beginning to struggle. I reward the developer by paying full price and then am expected to pay more again later for the full experience. I’m done being the sucker. From the consumer perspective, it seems to be a better decision to be patient and just wait for the full experience. It’s a better value and generally cheaper.

Genuinely happy for those who made the decision to wait, but I am not coming back to this game.
