Why It’s Difficult To Make A Faithful Screen Adaptation of Resident Evil

Rumors about a Netflix adaptation of Resident Evil continue to surface online, but will it remain faithful to the video games this time around?

Difficult? It could be so easy, George Romero almost cracked it with his first draft before Paul W.S Anderson and that was still in the early days of writing it.

The Netflix rumours sound awful, all 3 ideas suck. We're either going to get a game about Weskers two daughters, a spin off of the Paul W.S Anderson world or a story which is isolated and has nothing to do with any of the stories in the games.

The first game could be the first series / film, it could easily work.

Resident Evil Degeneration was great but it was a CGi film.

It would be easier if Capcom could keep a story straight themselves. The more entries there are the more convoluted it gets. Personally I didn't mind the first 2 movies.

I agree this isn't dang difficult. The Wesker reports give you a phenomenal outline. People wanna see the game on the big screen not this Bulls hit like they did with Alice

Of course, it is difficult. A 2-hour-non-death-clear play through of RE will become an extremely boring and fragmented movie. You have to change something to make the non-death part believable at least.

For the movie franchise, it was Alice. She was unlimited rocket launcher, One-punch man, who can hack through overwhelming situation and took all bullets for survival of protagonists, gave us an acceptable excuse for the non-death clear at first trial. The trick worked only once. As soon as focus of the series shift to the rocket launcher itself, thrill was gone.

Faithful adaptation of video game is extremely difficult, and in my opinion unworthy task, because movie cannot reset progress. Failure, or death, is an integral part to be a horror game. Removal of this element will take away spine of RE.

“ Obviously, this formula works well for an interactive medium such as a video game, but not so much for a movie or a TV series.”

Exactly. Obviously. It’s why there have been like 4 different directors on the bioshock movie. They all quit lol. Using the summary of a game doesn’t always have the same impact as playing. They could make a good bioshock movie script if they didn’t follow the storyline and just made a spin off in rapture. I hope that movie comes out eventually lol. New mortal Kombat sounds cool too.

Eternal Darkness was way ahead of its time especially for a Nintendo exclusive.

I would love to see a remake or sequel (multiplatform)

This Feature Makes Lethal Company Scarier Than Resident Evil

Games like Lethal Company end up scary because of their freeform nature, while Resident Evil's polish and storytelling ultimately make them rather tame in comparison. Agree or disagree?
