Fighting games are getting ridiculous with season after season pass for 3-4 characters each. I miss the days of just unlocking characters and costumes through playing.

KyRo1603d ago

It's why I haven't bought a single fighting game this generation. Multiple season passes for characters you used to unlock by playing the game. Namco are mocking people with tekken 7. It's the first one I've not played.

theshredded1603d ago (Edited 1603d ago )

Or you don't need every character... I don't like 5 of the dlc characters available now. Expansions if they're good in Rpgs and mmos are worse. You can't not buy them.

Tross1603d ago

Yeah, I really don’t like how they’ve handled Tekken 7, at all. I plan on checking it out eventually, but that day still hasn’t come. I’ve instead been cheating on Tekken and enjoying some retro fighting games I never played previously.

monkey6021603d ago

I skipped a number of fighting games this gen just because of this. Some of the games I would have tried just for the sake of it, like Street Fighter 5, Marvel vs Capcom, My Hero one's justice, Dragon ball fighter z, Jump force I skipped ALL of them because I felt I was missing something and not getting the full game without forking out for season passes.

Games I intended to buy like Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2 I waited for complete editions and eventually stopped caring so never bothered.

Fighting games have become a joke for the most part.

Mortal Kombat 11 was great and had a fair bit of content but even still, less than a year later and we're on our 2 season pass.

Orionsangel1603d ago

Just sell the whole damn package. Stop selling me the game in pieces so you end up selling the entire game for 200 dollars. What a scam!!!

@FishTank
Name a Tekken game that only got 2 characters added over the previous game's roster, outside of Tekken 4. Tekken 4 is the black sheep of the series for several reasons, its lack of characters being one of the biggest ones.

Tross1603d ago

Companies have unfortunately figured out the simple truth, which is that fighting games lend themselves phenomenally well to the current age of DLC and season passes; so well in fact that it’s almost as if the genre were made for it.

I also miss the unlockable, and that’s something the current generation will never get to experience. Instead they get to experience the joys of paying more money for content from previous games that was cut due to corporate greed.

Lexreborn21603d ago

That’s also that days of when we bought fighting games almost yearly.

SegaGamer1603d ago

I would rather have that. At least those games felt like new experiences even if the gameplay was similar. This feels like exactly what it is, games sold to us in pieces.

This is just being greedy. If it was about more than greed, then why not sell it all in one season pass? Why does it have to be 2 or 3? The whole genre has been ruined for me.

Lexreborn21603d ago

@SegaGamer

Because I’m a fighting game when you add new mechanics, characters etc. it changes the core gameplay 100%. And, I’m fighting games it’s a race to find the most exploitable thing and win. Unless you believe a fighter like Fist of the North Star is definitive

NapalmSanctuary1602d ago

The only fighting game series I ever saw coming out yearly, ever (besides the first 2 Tekkens), was MK in the ps2 era. It certainly wasn't Tekken after Tekken 2.

Lexreborn21602d ago

@Napalm

Tekken has been every 2 years while every other fighting game was practically yearly. And now Tekken 7 has last 4 years going on 5....

How are people not seeing the change in trend and effectively the money you have saved?

NapalmSanctuary1601d ago (Edited 1601d ago )

@Lexreborn2
Almost 5 years my ass. The game hit PS4 in June 2017. Thats 2 and a half years with $80 in season passes in the meantime, on top of the $60 price for the game. This deal is officially more expensive than the every-other-year model. Especially when Tekken Tag 2 ultimately had 59 characters with all characters and customisation items that came as dlc came as free dlc. And that game came ONLY two years after Tekken 6 with nearly 20 more characters on the roster. Then we wait 6 years for the next installment that drops with only 36 characters initially in tow and a whopping $80 just to get 12 more. Based on the cost of the base game's price, that's $20 worth of characters for 4 times that amount. The value of the package has most definitely degraded since TT2.

And what do you mean every other fighting game was coming out yearly. MK came out yearly for 3 games and that was just during the ps2 era, not to mention they all sucked. If you were waiting for good MK games, the wait was from 96 to 2011. SoulCalubur certainly wasn't a yearly release. Not even Tekken maintained an every 2 year release schedule. There was a 3 year gap between 4 and 5 and a four year gap between 5 and 6. And when Tekken Tag 2 came out two years after 6, it brought the goods. Enough characters to fill 2 and a half Tekken games for $60. Maybe there were games that actually had annual releases but acting like it was ubiquitous among all or even most fighting games is just disingenuous.

Street fighter has been doing this since the early 90s With multiple full priced releases.

This model is better than paying 60 dollars for some extra characters and rebalancing.

bacrec11603d ago

I just bought the latest Soulcalibur to avoid this mess. It's tough being a Fighting game fan in this era.

Skuletor1603d ago

Avoid what mess? The latest Soulcalibur just got a Season Pass 2

AnubisG1603d ago

I miss unlocking characters too. It was one of my favorite things about fighting games especially when it was a suprise which character will be unlocked.

Another season pass without Kiryu!

DxTrixterz1603d ago

But hey we got a f****** GANRYU. Seriously. One of the worst and least liked characters made it in and KAZUMA freaking KIRYU didn't and now it's perfect time to add him since Yakuza games will be on XBox One. I've been BEGGING for Kiryu way back even before season 1 dlc came out.

P_Bomb1603d ago

I was just thinking that. Kazuma Kiryu would fit well with Tekken.

Orionsangel1603d ago

Just sell the whole damn package. Stop selling me the game in pieces so you end up selling the entire game for 200 dollars. What a scam!

generic-user-name1603d ago (Edited 1603d ago )

The whole package was sold at launch, there was a list of characters and content and that was set at a price that anyone who bought it agreed to at the time, so you got what you paid for.

These season passes, at least for Tekken 7, only exist because the game is a success, no Tekken has been supported this well after launch, more people are playing T7 on Steam than MK11 and MK11 sold well, because people are sticking around for the quality of T7. So because their playerbase has stuck around, they are able to justify creating new content, not for free of course because they aren't a charity (although some of the stuff is free).

Don't like it? Don't buy it, but don't act like these companies owe you something for nothing.

Angyobangyo1603d ago

He’s not asking something for nothing. Learn to read and stop putting words into people’s’ mouths. He clearly stated sell us the whole package. Just because people weren’t early adopters should mean they have to screw late adopters. Fans are willing to pay but not this drip drip nonsense.

generic-user-name1602d ago

@Angyobango what are you talking about? How are late adopters being screwed over early adopters? Maybe you should learn to read.

Lexreborn21603d ago

People really seem to have a detachment from reality with fighting games and content. We legit get more bang for our buck with the season pass model vs the previous model where the had yearly FULL. Retail releases of fighters.

Unless people still want the madden model for their fighters.

boing11603d ago

I concur. I'm perfectly fine with the way T7 is handling it. Makes more sense.

SegaGamer1603d ago

I preferred the old style. I had no problem buying DBZ Budokai games one after the other, they felt like new experiences every time.

Lexreborn21603d ago

I have a hard time you have an Issue with Tekken 7 and season passes.(which each season HAS made it a different game including SFV etc.) where you have probably IF truly committed paid 160 so far over 5 years.

But think buying budokai 1-3, budokai Tenkaichi 1-3 over the same time frame for 360 dollars is a deal.... I don’t know what to say to you.

VTKC1603d ago

Haradas selective memory strikes again. Mr there wont be any DLC only to release a mode that was originally unlockable in past game. Season pass clucking 3? Well my wallet suffers from something, its called selective spending. And that aint good news because its chosen not to part with any money your way.

I never understood the logic of that form of protest. If anything, it increases fossil fuel consumption by forcing a lot of vehicles to idle until the road is no longer blocked. I’m all for protesting a cause one believes in, but I would think people would want their form of protest to at least make sense.

yeh, its quite dangerous too, cause u never know if anyone needs medical attention or not.
