After Sekiro, I Take Back Everything Bad I Ever Said About Dark Souls

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice updates the FromSoftware formula drastically, but somehow, it's made me appreciate Dark Souls' quirks even more.

Just got this game, and its kicking my A$$, but I knew who "FromSoftware" was before I purchased the game, and I appreciate the challenge...

VerminSC1810d ago

It’s so different from dark souls. You can grind and cheese to some extent in dark souls. In sekiro you gotta get good or you can’t beat it. It’s an amazing game.

AnthonyDavis1810d ago

This is a fake souls game which makes me want another dark souls game even more.

bujasem_891810d ago

It definitely isn't a fake. I just don't understand the people that say you can't grind in this game.

Please tell me what you are smoking. You see those 4 trees of moves in your start menu. Those are what you gring and what you use to beat any challenge you face. Just gotta find the right weak points in tactic.

Still can't wait for a souls game. I would so play a demons souls remaster that was a master piece. Saw a lot of mods to it in Sekiro in fact.

cyber_daemonx1810d ago

@anthony, its not a Souls game full stop fgs.

Vegamyster1810d ago

AnthonyDavis

Fake Souls game? It started off as a new Techu lol, it's not supposed to feel the same.

ethan_braun1810d ago

You're right! They're both fantastic, just totally different than one another.

Wait tell you get to last boss it's pure evil

UltraNova1810d ago

Pretty... hateful guy ;-)

TheKingKratos1810d ago (Edited 1810d ago )

I am at the last boss fight i can get through the 1st and 2nd phase just fine without even losing any health but things get much worse in the 3rd phase
But i think i can manage.

He still not the hardest boss from them
I think martyr and nameless king much harder tbh

Edito1810d ago

You will appreciate until you start feeling frustrated lol then you will get good you will feel satisfied then you will find the next boss that will make you fill again helpless and frustrated then deep inside you will say to yourself "FromSoftware went the extra mile there was no need seriously" Then you will rage quit... but you won't be able to sleep or to have fun with anything else and this pattern will repeat until you finish the game like a proper Shinobi :-) You can't imagine how I felt when I beat the final boss... But trust me you will feel the same...

Keep going and don't give up

CaptainOmega1810d ago

I got the Platinum for Dark Souls 1 and 3, Demon’s Souls, and Bloodborne. I tried playing Nioh and it just kicked my butt (didn’t make it past the 2nd level). I fear if I tried Sekiro it would be another game that would end up in my backlog.

Mulletino1810d ago

Its almost like reverse bloodborne. Very offensive but block/parry instead of dodges. Great game and very playable once you understand how the combat system works.

ChipChipperson1810d ago

Right now, I'm about halfway on my second playthrough. Honestly, it feels "easier", in certain aspects, give it a try. You might end up finding it easier than Bloodborne( I can't comment on the Souls series, because I haven't played them). I also got the platnium for Bloodborne. Once you get the hang of the gameplay mechanic, without spoiling anything story-wise, you will end up having an easier time. The combat in Sekiro is definitely much more geared towards deflecting/blocking a majority of enemy attacks, mainly dodging. Dodging has its place within the combat, but it's not like Bloodborne. You have to be much more confrontational and more aggressive, in most cases, to really get the edge in Sekiro. The game will definitely test your focus and timing with deflections, since deflecting attacks is crucial to overcoming the tougher enemies, these are always the mini-bosses and bosses. The mini-bosses and bosses, you don't merely just try to take their health to zero, you can, but it's better to deal posture damage, to open them up to a deathblow. A boss can have half health, but if you dealt enough posture damage, through well-timed deflections and a steady onslaught of successful attacks, you can do a deathblow on them and start the next round of that boss fight.

Most enemies in the game can be stealth killed, some it takes a little ingenuity to stealth kill the more perceptive ones. There are even mini-bosses and bosses who can be stealth killed to make the fight end quicker. Not saying they'll flat out die and the boss is over with, but it makes life easier because you essentially take out a round that needs to be fought, and you can save your resources for the later round of that fight. You're free to travel and fall back to areas and heights that the enemy can't get to(some enemies, usually the shinobi-type ones, can chase you down for a bit), that way you can either wait for the enemy to lose track of you, regain composure, ambush, etc. Don't forget, this game does play a bit similarly to Tenchu, in terms of map navigation, enemy placement/patrols, etc. so direct combat isn't the only way to get through areas, unlike Bloodborne where you meet a group of enemies, fight or run past them. This game you can do that, but stealth is there, and overall traversal has much more to it since you have a large map with shortcuts.

You also have the prosthetic arm with you, which can actually make some fights so much easier because there are enemy types that are weak or susceptible to specific prosthetic arm weapons. Beast/animal types are weak/stunned by fire type weapons, some tough later game enemies are killed very easily if you found the poisonous blade prosthetic, the shuriken prosthetic starts to become a great tool to use to keep up posture damage when the enemy starts to recover from it, etc.

Definitely try this game. I had the same feelings once I had the game, the beginning portions of it were really giving me a hard time, and I was starting to become a bit unmotivated to continue. HOWEVER, once you start to learn, or say "unlearn" the way you play this game, it starts to come together. The mechanics of the game start to make sense and you start to develop the mental capacity on how to deal with situations this game throws at you. Don't try to play this game like it's Bloodborne. It has similarities to it, since it is a From Software game, but it plays differently.

Mostly different but I’ll give you “better”.

Kaze881810d ago

I have played every Souls game, Bloodborne and Nioh at least twice to the end. Sekiro just once, yet going on second run after I finish Metro and DMC5. I do enjoy Nioh's different styles and gear system, but at times it's just plain cheap in difficulty department. Huge difficulty spikes every now and then. But souls, bb and sekiro is made by totally another developer, so they are quite different to Nioh. I would say that Sekiro is really hard at the start, but in the end it's maybe the best game that they have done. Still love DS3 and BB, but Sekiro is something different. You have to take most your enemies head on, deflect their strikes and strike back when you can. Use the tools for right situations. Great game.

ethan_braun1810d ago

Give it a try! I still think it's a fantastic game, just don't go into it thinking you'll have the same experience as a Soulsbourne. It's harder, but more forgiving and stream-lined than those games.

BlaqMagiq11810d ago

I'm surprised you're struggling in Nioh after platinuming the Souls games. I love Nioh but I found it to be much easier than the Souls games. With the right setup you can actually be OP in the game. Even against bosses.

CaptainOmega1809d ago

Maybe I wasn't playing it right.

This game really isn’t so bad once you get a rhythm going.

For me the last fight was a bit too long. You have to be really cautious or else you start all over again. I simply did not have the time or patience for that. When they patch in a checkpoint I will come back to it.

Wonton6781809d ago

I already played the game, it's difficult but I enjoyed it

Before Miyazaki Retires, We Need To Get A Sekiro Sequel

A sequel to the studio's acclaimed title, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, would be the perfect swan song for long-time video game director Hidetaka Miyazaki.

H915d ago

Man you didn't have to do me like that with the title

LoveSpuds15d ago

I just don't see it happening given the success of Elden Ring. I think we'll be seeing a sequel to Elden Ring before anything else.

Demetrius15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I'm not into souls games but it's good to see that this dev studio stick to what makes their titles unique, there's alot of souls copy n pasted games but they rarely get talked about cause they're looked at as copies and not original created ideas, the souls games are unique cause they offer they're own identity instead imitating I respect that

jznrpg15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Or Bloodborne 2 preferably both but that’s a lot to ask if he plans on retiring sooner than later

Leeroyw15d ago

Bloodborne 2 or I'd simply love a 60fps remaster. I'd also love a bloodborne randomiser option.

toxic-inferno14d ago

I'm definitely holding out hope for a Bloodborne 60fps remaster still. Some extra features thrown in would be nice too.

With regards to a sequel, I'd actually rather From Software make another new IP with a different setting. That is what made Bloodborne so good - the fact that it took a proven formula and applied it to a completely new setting.

anast14d ago

The hype would be insane if they announced Bloodborne 2.

Inverno15d ago

What if they made a Sekiro/Bloodborne mix?

I regret i never played it, like many other great games!! Still on my radar, when i become retro gamer in a year or two with all this gaas crap happening around

Psychonaut8518d ago

Absolutely. Amazing art design, and didn’t have the Bloodborne problem so it runs at 60FPS on newer hardware, which is amazing given the reaction based gameplay

Cacabunga18d ago

Wait did it get a next gen patch??

Sciurus_vulgaris18d ago

This one title that never clicked with me. I enjoyed Dark Souls, Demon Souls and Bloodborne, but I never warmed up to Sekiro’s parry-focused combat. I honestly gave up on the game at about the half way point.

Armyofdarkness18d ago

Me too. But after the Stellar Blade demo and parrying like crazy I’m tempted to go back and play this again

Inverno18d ago

Took me a couple years too get into when I first bought it. I had gotten so used to Bloodborne that the gameplay was genuinely confusing me. Picked it up a third time and clicked. The game is souls stripped of all its RPG elements and left with nothing but it's combat. It's Souls at its pureness but I can see why the combat would turn people off. That's why I liked it so much tho, without the choice of weapons it's very focused on a specific style. I think a sequel with a small selection of weapons but each fleshed out would be the right step.

Sciurus_vulgaris18d ago

My problem with Sekiro was the combat, I didn’t find it as engaging as Bloodborne, DarkSouls due to the lack of RPG elements. I even found action games like Ninja Gaiden 1-2 and Ghost of Tsushima more engaging as well.

The 7 Best Souls-Like Games - Mastering the Challenge

The Souls-like genre remains popular, along with FromSoftware's classics there are many contenders. But which are the best Souls-like games?

toxic-inferno26d ago

Hmm... In my opinion, the 7 best are the 6 made by FromSoftware (DeS, DS1, DS2, DS3, BB and ER), then Lies of P. But each to their own.

kevco3326d ago

Still DS1? You don't feel it's been surpassed yet?

Demon's Souls has the remake of course, but DS1 has surely been outdated?

Smellsforfree26d ago

I think that the DS1 remake is better looking than DS2. The interior lighting matched with the low resolution textures in DS2 is very garish, IMO.

Besides graphics, what do you mean by DS1 being "outdated"? I'm someone who played through Elden Ring and just recently played through the DS series, and as far as gameplay went, there were all very similar.

Cacabunga26d ago

I haven’t played many but Bloodborne and NIOH1 are on top of my list.. had a blast with these 2

toxic-inferno25d ago

For world design and interconnectedness (that's a word, right?) DS1 is yet to be beaten.
