Obsidian Might Give Us a Good Fallout Game Since Bethesda Won’t

Harsh...but Bethesda need a good kick up the arse if they want to improve their games

They are too comfortable and it's why they wasted time doing an online/co-op based game hardly anyone asked for. They are a single player driven studio and can hardly do that without a hundred bugs so why get greedy and go after the money when it's going to cost you more in the long run after all the controversies and lower sales

Bethesda need to be challenged and maybe future Fallout/Elder Scrolls games will be better.

I hear you. It's just that when I see Obsidians new game I don't really see Fallout, I got more of a Bioshock Infinite/Borderlands vibe than anything else.

I didn't enjoy Fallout 4 as much as 3 and I definitely will stay away from 76. But I think there's still a chance for Bethesda to try and redeem themselves with there upcoming games.

And with the flack they're taking with 76, maybe that's all they need to make a better Fallout game.

Who knows...will keep a cautious eye out for sure.

Well, they've got a LONG time to deal with their issues. If Starfield and Elder Scrolls is next generation, it's possible there won't be a Fallout 5 next gen.

there was a theory going around that Fallout76 was created only to get the development team to the size thast required for Starfield and TES6.

they wouldn't allow the increase in team sizes for those two games (couldn't justify cost) so instead they "created" the online only fallout with Mt to bring in money and justify a larger dev team

While Fallout is what many will view this a spiritual successor of, I see a blend of Bioshock/Borderlands and even a little bit of Mass Effect (crew in space ship). Suffice it to say, these are all good things to pull from.

I hope the ass-kicking Bethesda has been getting is enough to wisen them up. They need a new engine, and they need to do some serious work on FO76.

Just curious... Since Obsidian actually owns the IP, then theoretically the sequel could very well end up as a Xbox/Windows exclusive. So my question is: Does that deter any of you gamers from buying this who don't want to game on Xbox? Or would it actually be a reason to buy an Xbox for you if this game ends up being great and you want to play the sequel?

Obviously taking out the possibility of you owning a PC capable of playing this on windows, but still. Knowing the sequel to this game could be Xbox/Windows exclusive change your mind about getting invested in the first one?

I wouldn't be deterred from it myself. If I continue to like what I see, I'll play it when it comes out, then decide what to do in the future should it go exclusive to a platform. It could be years before we see a sequel either way.

This game gave me a Borderlands vibe more than anything but I hope it is a Fallout killer so Bethesda learn its lesson.

I don't blame Bethesda for trying to cash in on the Microtransaction market in multiplayer games but they executed it poorly. They have blemished the Fallout name and now any other multiplayer versions will be avoided by the masses. I own the game but I will never spend money on the cosmetics because the framerate and textures are so horrendous that you can only see what I am wearing when I stand still.

I've been saying the same, as for the overall look of the title. People keep saying Borderlands, but I see RAGE far more.
Mechanically speaking though, this really is them working off of the systems they used in New Vegas.

Well, Obsidian has just as bad a history with games that are ridiculously buggy and broken so I guess as long as it's not Fallout 76 levels of bad and they don't repeat New Vegas with those game breaking bugs then they are in a far better position than Bethesda is at the moment.

Oh just stop it. Obsidian’s latest games such as South Park and Pillar of Eternity rarely have many bugs in them like Bethesda’s games.

But Pillars of Eternity 2 flopped very badly and South Park was a miracle. A few games out of how many does not forgive their errors of the past especially when they couldn't just admit they messed up but blamed everyone else.

You're really just trying to hate at this point. You claimed all their games are buggy; someone gives you examples to the contrary, and then you deflect on points of sales, or the other example being a "miracle". It's not a miracle that a competent developer, given resources and time, made a competent game. And Pillars sold what it needed to. It's a crowd funded game. At the end of the day, it paid for itself via the people who wanted it made. The rest of the sales were just profit. It wasn't a blowout, which is unfortunate, because it's a good title with strong writing. But stop trying to devalue a good developer; one of the best in terms of writing and character choice, actually.

Maybe with their next game but Outer Worlds isn't even an open world RPG. It's open-ended but linear.

I think at the least this game highlights how Bethesda has struggled to innovate and move with the times. If the rumour is true that they intend for ES6 to run on the same engine that was outdated ten years ago then that's a prime example of what I'm saying.

They need to have a word with themselves and ask themselves what do they need to do to make the best games that they possibly can, because currently they're falling far, far short of that target.

Curious what engine their using. Is it legal for them to use an engine so similar to what fallout uses? Is it the same? Did a past deal let them use their engine and modify it? They just look so similar but obsidians certainly looks more polished

They're using UE4, which, if used properly, is far more reliable.

I needed this announcement. Bethesda has gotten cocky and complacent this gen. Hopefully this outsells Fallout 76 2-1 as huge Falcon Punch to the gut.
