Editorial: Can Cyberpunk 2077 be Bigger than The Witcher?

Jacob St-Amour from Link-Cable Writes: "We’ve all seen the amazing 48-minute footage of CD Projekt Red’s upcoming first-person RPG title, Cyberpunk 2077 and I think it is a fair assumption to say that this will most likely be one of the biggest games in many years. While it certain that this ambitious project will most likely hit consoles in a few years or even on next-generation tech, Cyberpunk 2077 still remains the biggest topic of discussion in the gaming community. So much so that people are convinced that the title will surpass the company’s previous work on The Witcher franchise which would be no small feat to accomplish. The Witcher Trilogy, especially the sequel titles are phenomenal in of their own and topping that off will surely be a challenge, but we’re also confident that people who made those games are up for the task."

In before certain people come in and trash it for being in first person.

nowitzki20042056d ago

Hope they trash real life as well for being first person.

Those are big shoes to fill but if anyone is up to the task I'd say it's CDPR! They have a knack for covering all the bases , even the smallest details and I think 2077 will be something special!

Sure it's a different property, different setting different perspective (I'm sure they knew there'd be blowback) but they are master developers whose work speaks for itself! It comes down to narrative, characters and how all the mechanics come together to form a game that'll resonate and I believe they are up to the task!

I didn't play The Witcher, mainly because the fantasy genre isn't my cup of tea. Cyberpunk 2077 is day one for me because the setting and gameplay are more to my personal tastes. I love single player games primarily, but games like The Witcher and Red Dead Redemption just don't do anything for me, despite them being very highly rated quality titles. To each their own.

Yes and especially with better hardware coming the next few years it'll mean an even bigger world.

7 disagrees shows how many look at one dlc that had a rip off fight from ghost in the shell and goes wow what a goat team i love cdpr while ignoring that they only made 2 games that were good witcher 2/3 in 20yrs.

But its a new world we want a criminal that support's legal murder as president/support shoplifting love toxic work environments and have a mass casualty event every other day.

GhostMirror8d ago

I’ll admit I didn’t play it at launch, but Cyberpunk 2077 is a really good game now.

And who the hell knows what you’re even going on about in your second paragraph here.

EazyC9d ago

Wait a min...I swear to god CP2077's source code got leaked before. CDPR needs to stop using "password123" for all their accounts 😅

just_looken8d ago

Na its hundreds ex employees no doubt just getting there revenge.

Profchaos8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

This is the same leak the threat actors have been trying to sell the source code after cd project didn't pay the ransom.

They didn't manage to sell the source code to any company largely because it would be unethical for say EA to buy it so the threat actors failed to find a buyer.

After they failed to make any money they went through with their threat of simply giving it away.

They will need to add everything they promised in the first one and not over promise on the second one.

just_looken9d ago

They also need to drop esg then hire employees that have knowledge not hire them because they have a set of tits.

Official video they hired people to fill the esg clipboard

As somebody who has been playing the tabletop games since the 90s and was let down on launch by my PS4 version, you can bet I'm not going the preorder any sequel.

3rd person option, and everything else that was originally promised. Next don't force agenda driven naratives. Finally, release a finished product without need for day one patches.

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
