Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite Sales Were a Bust - Is the Franchise Doomed?

After a poor showing in sales, which fell far below Capcom's expectations, are we likely to see another MvC game after Infinite?

The problem isn't with the premise of Marvel vs Capcom.

The problem was with an uninteresting roster, mediocre graphics/style, and the usual DLC-greed.

When I saw all that, I didn't even bother getting interested.

The boring Beta didn't help much either.

Again, not a problem with the premise, but more with the execution.

XisThatKid2273d ago

Yea to be honest the franchise is great with one ugly downgrade installation.

JaXion52273d ago

That's exactly what they get for releasing a half assed product, they need to take notes from Arc System Works on how to make a quality fighting game.

jaymacx2273d ago

Capcom knows how, they just rather give us less for our money. DLC and season passes should not even exist for INCOMPLETE fighting games. Make a complete game first then add characters as extra content. MvC2 remains the best of the series with how much value you get plus great art direction and game-play.

PhoenixUp2273d ago

The underwhelming sales of Street Fighter III, Street Fighter EX, & Soul Calibur V didn’t put an end to those respective fighting franchises.

I expect Marvel and Capcom to realize that screwing with consumers is a sure fire way to guarantee failure and return to the elements that made this franchise one of the best in the fighting genre.

_-EDMIX-_2273d ago

Absolutely agreed I hate these articles that are so sensationalised and dramatic.

There have been many entries in game series that are not that good and then you would get a better one later down the line. It would be like trying to say Splinter Cell can never recover after Pandora tomorrow and then completely ignore chaos theories success.

People seriously need to shut up about this crap in simply review what they see on a game by game basis. I don't ever really count any series out. It would be like trying to say because of Sonic Colors I shouldn't buy Sonic Mania...

stokedAF2273d ago

Those are capcom owned franchises though. It’s different when you are dealing with shared properties. MvC3 went through legal hell and that’s why most of us thought there never would have been a MvC4, that’s what makes this mediocre cash in so much more disappointing.

My point is it’s a lot easier to retire a franchise when the property is split between two holders. It becomes “is it worth dealing with the legal trouble for a franchise that sells below average”. Opposed to something like street fighter or soul calibur where they have full rights control to change characters and systems.

@ Edmix

Indeed we’ve seen various franchises survive worse

- Tomb Raider continued on after The Angel of Darkness
- Crash Bandicoot continued on after Mind over Mutant
- Devil May Cry continued on after DMC2.
- Metroid continued on after Other M.
- Sonic the Hedgehog continued on after Shadow, Sonic ‘06, & Sonic Boom.

There’s other examples of course, one game underperforming either critically or commercially isn’t always going to spell the end of that series.

@ stoked

Objection!

Soul Calibur is not a Capcom franchise. There hasn’t even been any Capcom characters who crossed into that franchise yet. SCV is just another example of a game not sitting well with its fans but the franchise continuing to live past that misfire.

MvC:I didn’t sell so bad that it’d discourage the creators from continuing the franchise. It’s legacy is too epic to completely abandon. What it has done is shown that you shouldn’t abandon the fans or they’ll abandon you. A proper Marvel vs Capcom 4 or whatever would be a big success as long as longtime fans aren’t screwed over.

stokedAF2272d ago

I had to reread what I said because I never called soul calibur a capcom franchise but it does kind of look like that my mistake. I was talking about the street fighter games but my point still stands. These games are owned by capcom and Namco respectively. They are not split properties is my point and can change however they want.

The legacy isn’t that big, sure it’s beloved by a fan base but a 1000 people at evo doesn’t make up for the sale loss and legal troubles. The sales have to be worth it. Us fans can see what needs to be done but MvC:I shows that they don’t care what the fans want. They don’t see it like we do.

PhoenixUp2272d ago

Marvel vs Capcom’s legacy isn’t that big? The series is Capcom’s 7th best selling franchise. Something as successful as that isn’t something that could be easily shelved, especially since its legacy as a series is what gave rise to the Vs Capcom series of titles.

The sales are very much worth it. Why do you think Capcom has tried numerous times to revive the franchise as opposed to their other wholely owned fighting series’ like Darkstalkers and Rival Schools?

Capcom can make another title in this franchise, especially since the license is easier to obtain now. MvC: I hadn’t bombed so hard that it caused either company to lose money on the venture. They just have to realize that you don’t abandon veterans for the newbie MCU crowd next time.

Sgt_Slaughter2273d ago

I think it'll be relaunched or frozen until further notice just like Mass Effect (or for movie franchises, Ghostbusters).

The biggest problem is, it's not that hard. Just make a game with the roster of MvC 2 with a few additions, and the art style similar to FighterZ. Bam, instant big seller.

to be fair, there were three capcom vs snk titles. 1, Pro & 2 but only one SvC Chaos. If there is a capcom/SNK crossover that needs a new entry it is that one.

The article states Tekken 7 might be the best fighter currently available on Xbox, but leaves out important information that it never takes advantage of the Xbox hardware. It never got any kind of patch/boost/upgrade for the more powerful Xbox consoles, meaning it still runs at 720p I believe, resulting in a very blurry look.

Truly wish more devs would respect their products and customers enough to address issues such as these.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Deserved Better

What could've been an unbeatable addition to the Versus franchise ends up being a footnote in why publishers shouldn't leave a project hanging with a meager budget.

It had two-person teams instead of the fan-favored 3, and they charged for Venom as DLC instead of including him in the base game, even though Venom was the most-missed omission from MvC3.

Marvel vs Capcom deserved better than Infinite.

MvC3’s mechanics were too shallow, but at least they tried with the roster (THE most attractive part of the franchise).

If they were smart, they’d go back and do a semi-reboot of MvC2 with a hand-drawn style, and just include Marvel characters.

Avengers vs X-men would be infinitely cooler than anything watered down with old Capcom characters. I don’t need Ryu to fight Iron Man…. We wanna have Hulk fight Iron Man more.

Shiro173841d ago

I enjoyed 2v2 way better then 3 on a team. Also, the mechanics on mvci where easy better.

MIDGETonSTILTS17841d ago

They couldn’t be easier than MVC3 and be better.

sourOG841d ago (Edited 841d ago )

I thought the series went into hibernation. The property rights debacle was an understandable reason. It is a pain in the ass. Old games getting their soundtracks removed, games getting taken off of the store, etc. When they announced infinite I went berserk because I understood the trouble they went through to make that happen. They got hype to 100 and then took a giant dump on it. We didn’t deserve that, mvc didn’t deserve that.

I want a capcom versus game. They have enough characters to do it and the budget and properties aren’t an issue

VersusDMC841d ago

I more want a Bandai Namco or Square vs Capcom. Or a Project X Zone situation where it's characters from several different publishers.

sourOG841d ago

I don’t really play snk games like that so that doesn’t hype me. I haven’t played the other vs games. I want a straight up 3v3 capcom characters fighter. No guests, no contracts for right holder liberties and chains to someone else’s characters.

That development freedom could be boring for some with just capcom characters but I don’t think it would. I think it would be capcom unleashed and I also believe they have a solid roster with their own properties. In a time when everyone is making their own “rumble verse” with their properties I think it’s time for classic capcom to show them how it’s done.

Terry_B841d ago

Yeah..both Capcom and Disney ruined the series with this one.

Gaming4Life1981841d ago

I like infinite but the roster is terrible. Capcom needs to remake mvsc2 asap
