How Not to Be a Toxic Gamer in 2018

There's too much toxicity in the world today. People should be trying to make the planet a better place. Especially gamers! After our last list prompted a response from PewDiePie himself, we've decided to put together eight ways even you can make a difference.

Happy new year guys!

Funny cheatcc would post this. If even half the toxicity left the community, this site would not be able to sustain itself because all it relies on is clickbait nonsense.

It's quite simple, really.
Three step process:

#1 Love the games more than the systems and try to invest in more than one, so that you can form a legitimate appreciation for games and systems outside of what you're used to. In fact, try to do so even if you can't afford more than one. At least then you'll be more likely to have your opinion taken seriously.

#2 Be fair, but don't be excessive, in your criticism of systems, regardless of whether you like them or not, and try to learn where the line between fair and opinionated lies instead of simply accepting your own opinion as the overriding truth.
Logical analysis is fine, but trying to take a console out of the same consideration line as its competition, because you dislike it and/or don't own it and/or don't consider it "a real console", is what fanboys do.
Don't be a cynical fanboy in 2018.

#3 Try to disassociate yourself from being a part of any one fanbase, and accept that none of them are safe from the toxic elements without becoming too much of a part of them. Your preferred fanbase isn't "the best" or "the least toxic". Accept that, let it go, and enjoy what you like without making a big deal about trivial things or arguing with fanboys who insist on doing so.

Won't give it a click but im Pretty sure the article is talking about online gaming

Give the man(gal) some credit though, that was a thoughtful comment!

I see what your trying to say but respectfully disagree.
There s no rule on what people 'should' like or be happy to be a fan of.
Its absolutely fine, even its human, to be fan of particular games or consoles or whatever you wish.
I say dont be afraid to share your passion and respect other gamers passion. Simple as that. Love stronger than hate.
Also its not about having your 'opinion' taken seriously either. Care if you wish. Its about being genuine and respectful of others. Most gamers concern are mainly to enjoy gaming and gaming communities are just a way to be informed and share a passion, not the other way round

1: You don't have to invest in more than one to appreciate gaming, systems, or whatever. Some of use can easily recognize the technical merits and appeal of good games on other systems. One just has to stop acting like games on other systems aren't that good, particularly when comparing to games on systems they prefer. I think a better approach is just accept that others will have different preferences, and try to empathize with what others may like about something.

2. Fair. That's a tough one. I think a lot of people believe they're fair, or try to approach things from a fair point of view, but when others don't want to hear criticism which comes from actual disappointment for whatever reason, it's hard to remain fair. I think everyone should be fair, but I think that a better approach would be for people to actually listen to others and try to see it from different points of view.

3. You're basically saying, stop being a fan boy. Even if one accepts that none are safe, that doesn't mean that others will care, and it's those that want to be toxic that would love for those that oppose their idiocy to just let it go, because it makes their voice louder, and allows them to live in a bubble, instead of just realizing that everyone has different opinions. Trolls(which is a bit different than a fan boy) want to incite vitriol, and while you can never get rid of them, you can lessen their impact by not responding to them. I think we're all guilty of feeding them, and I'm sure a lot of us may be considered trolls to some.

Very well written, though most are too narcissistic to have a willingness to consider its application.

wonderfulmonkeyman2350d ago

Narci... how did it turn out to sound like that?XD

I quite enjoy the lego games myself. And I say that confidently as a 50+ y/o man. They are just pure fun.
