PS4 is experiencing success everywhere. Deservedly so..

sonarus2878d ago

This is quite impressive considering steadily declining console sales in Japan

TheColbertinator2878d ago

With the Switch and PS4 surging,we could see some positive growth in the next few years.

thexmanone2877d ago

no it belongs to the gamers

goken2878d ago (Edited 2878d ago )

while definitely doing better than ps3, it seems Japan as a console market have been declining since ps2.
Happy that ps4 is doing better though, but i suspect for the Japan market, hybrid systems like switch are the way to go...

maybe sony can release a ps4 hybrid... i would get one 100% (likely cheaper than an xperia phone...)
btw sony should allow remote play on any Android device... seriously how many people own xperias anyway? i wouldn't mind paying some money to dl the app

Fantastic numbers, that just shows how appealing the PS4 is that it can be successful in a region like Japan that vastly prefers mobile and handheld gaming. Its amazing that a traditional console has sold so much there with how the market has changed in Japan

Congratulations Sony on the immense success of PS4 worldwide. If this Chinese initiative of sony works wonders then PS4 could become a real behemoth.

I miss the old days when Japan used to be a big part of Sony's hardware sales. The PS4 could have been at 70-80 million by now if Japan bought 10-20 million units.

zivtheawesome2878d ago

the problem is that most japanesse mostly care about portable games and portable consoles. which is why the switch is doing fairly well their now (faster than ps4).

andrewsquall2878d ago

Its actually down to the fact that some of Japan's biggest franchises of all time like Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter completely fizzled out last gen (as in, it fizzled out on next gen consoles at the time).
Just like moving on to PS2 hardware, DQ and MH should have been moved over to PS3 development and we should have had mind blowing looking versions of those games that took things to a whole new level tech and gameplay wise too.

Unfortunately Square Enix and Capcom chose to keep the games on PS2 era hardware for years like PSP or even less current generation capable hardware like the DS with its N64 specs. And then people wonder why Japan loves portable consoles over home consoles when it was plain obvious that 2 of the countries biggest selling games of all time stuck with handhelds as their primary releases.

Now we finally have a new DQ coming to a PlayStation home console and it doesn't even look much better than what a PS3 DQ game could have looked like 8 or 9 years ago (that they are STILL bringing to the 3DS with its Gamecube generation of tech).

It makes it even more impressive that ps4 has kept pace with ps2 with console gaming being alot less popular in Japan now than it was then. Ps4 is really killing it in Europe.

Different market.

Different time.

Japan largely plays mobile and handheld, I'd say the same applies to the west too when you look at the numbers.

andrewsquall2877d ago

Again, 2 of the biggest franchises of Japan, Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest have been stuck in a rut on handhelds for easily a decade now. That's the ONLY major reason they primarily play handhelds over there now, because they were conditioned to. If those 2 games had proper major next gen console releases over the last 12 years, things would be different today.

Oh, the main series Pokemon games are another huge portable series over there but then it always was. DQ and MH just added fuel to that. But yeah, it IS pretty amazing that PS4 is selling the way it is in Japan in 2017.

@Andrew- "That's the ONLY major reason they primarily play handhelds over there now"

No, just no.

As someone who owns a business since I was 25, opened another business and now starting a 3rd business...I can tell you this.

DEMAND COMES BEFORE THE PRODUCT!

Someone wanted to play on mobile far before you saw Monster Hunter or Dragon Quest.

You can't fight the market or try to manipulate it or bend it to your will.

Example. If I'm in Real Estate and I'm looking to move my business to Miami from Orlando, I first have to know DEMAND exist for what I'm doing in terms of residential sales.

When I enter the market and do well, the market continuing to buy has NOTHING to do with me still being in Miami.

Someone already wanted to buy in Miami, me being a Broker in Miami never FORCED the whole city to buy.

Soooo you could say an install base of users already existed that wanted to buy in the first place.

Apply that to mobile, the market existed, was wide open so developers made games on mobile, but again...understand that they were playing games on mobile, BEFORE Monster Hunter and DQ, as that is why those series came over, just like why I went to Miami. I saw a demand. Me going to Orlando, won't make the people in Miami, want to MOVE to Orlando. They already made the choice to live and buy in Miami.

Putting Monster Hunter or DQ on console, won't stop what you see on Mobile. MH and DQ only gave that install base what they wanted in the first place. FF has mobile titles, yet FF is also moving record units on console. They are just different markets. Those playing on mobile can't be forced or tricked into buying console bud, I know it sounds like putting MH or DQ on consoles will some how end mobile, but that just doesn't many any business sense. The mobile market didn't just EXCLUSIVELY play those 2 games. They existed waaaaaaay before those 2 games went to mobile. You can't get them buying a PS4, anymore then you can get someone who likes CandyCrush to buy a console.
