Death Stranding Could Deviate From Metal Gear Solid's Storytelling In Several Ways

Death Stranding Director Hideo Kojima said at Tribeca Gaming Festival that he's exploring more storytelling techniques. While Kojima didn't mention any specifics, there's possibly a few clues on how he'll do it in Death Stranding.

Lets hope its not the phantom pain storytelling or its doomed.MGS 3 & 4 were superb...

_-EDMIX-_2950d ago

Well you have to understand that was also under the constraints of Konami I don't think he was able to make the story he wanted to simply because Konami was still trying to protect the brand and likeness of snake.

Look at it this way big boss is a bad guy the things he does are just Horrors and when you actually read the context of his actions in the first two Metal Gear games he's not a good person even slightly but it's clear that Konami did not want to advertise an antihero because they want to keep selling their games with the "good guy" concept

Even Metal Gear Solid 4 story looks like it would have made more sense with Solid Snake just dying but it's very clear that Konami probably had their hooks in the entire project to not have Solid Snake die even though all the trailers or hinting at this something tells me that in the middle of development one Konami heard of this story and they forced him to change it.

Metal Gear Solid 3 was an absolutely amazing story and I think it was because it was a prequel so Kojima was able to experiment in kill off as much characters as he want to do considering it was not a continuation.

He was able to do an absolute story because it was not detrimental to the Future games that is what makes me feel that maybe Konami has always been trying to hinder specific Concepts to keep the protagonist irrelevant.

I truly don't believe Kojima just got together with all his staff and just decided to throw a Hail Mary and make a bad story for Metal Gear Solid 5, I think the story kojima wanted to make was definitely not the story Konami wanted.

If it was up to him he probably would have made it straight 100% Antihero story of Bigg Boss taking over the world and fighting Solid Snake, or building up the early Arsenal of supporters like psycho mantis etc

The way Konami is I just don't think they wanted to have the game focused on the bad guy so it sounded like there was deep conflict.

So I'm not ready to just throw Kojima or his team under the bus because of something like the phantom pain especially knowing that publisher, their work was hindered and it is very clear that Konami had a bunch of constraints.

LexHazard792950d ago

I like Kojima but you trying way to hard to put blame on Konami for Phantom Pain shortcomings. Could it just be they fell out of Love for each other. Dude was with them forever it was time to part ways.

_-EDMIX-_2950d ago

@Lex- "trying way to hard to put blame on Konami for Phantom Pain shortcomings"

They've made lots of efforts to silence their developers bud. Its clear their iron grip has negatively effected their games. I don't think Konami just gave Kojima 100% creative control. That is just extremely unlikely. MGSV's story legit sounds like its from the perspective of a Konami PR rep lol They wanted to sugar coat it as they want to still sell the brand.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

but I"m sure this is Kojima's fault too! lol

http://www.escapistmagazine...

Konami reeks of this bud. Selling a game like that has little to do with the developer and every thing to do with the publisher who owns the IP and wants a early pay day.

I would not be so quick to defend such a greedy publisher, its why all their main talent left.

CrimsonWing692950d ago (Edited 2950d ago )

Kojima is an amazing game creator but from a business point of view he's a nightmare.

He never releases on time and he goes over budget on every project.

http://www.gamezone.com/new...

He gets paid a salary regardless of anything he does. He has a poor business sense and when you delay a game it costs publishers a lot of money.

In the entire time he worked on Fox Engine and developing MGS V all we got was a shell of a game with repeated missions.

Sure, in a perfect world, if Kojima had unlimited amounts of time and money we could've had an incredible game but you can't make a corporation bleed money like he did and not expect them to react negatively.

Konami did what was right for them and it shows with how much content was lacking in MGS V. I'm absolutely shocked that MGS fans liked V at all since it felt unfinished and was easily the weakest entry in the series.

So I actually feel Konami did the right move from a business standpoint. I think them completely cancelling Silent Hills is where they made the mistake.

_-EDMIX-_2950d ago

@Crim- 100% agreed.

What he wanted for a game, was just not what Konami wanted in terms of a business stand point.

"So I actually feel Konami did the right move from a business standpoint" I actually agree.

They want to protect their IP and move units, we all know it was them that clearly stopped Snake from dying in MGS4, they want their cash cow. He will live forever and they will milk it to death for every last dime.

In that respect, I totally get it.

Only goes to show what they'll do to make a buck.

" I think them completely cancelling Silent Hills is where they made the mistake."

Agreed.

Although the series has easily one of the best stories in gaming, i wouldnt say extremely long cutscenes and long winded codec diologue makes for superb story telling.

andrewsquall2950d ago

@daBUSHwhaka Exactly "Death Stranding Could Deviate From Metal Gear Solid's Storytelling In Several Ways". To me that means it will have Phantom Pain levels of story telling i.e. NONE and ZERO character development. A "Metal Gear Solid" game it was not.

@_-EDMIX-_ It was nothing to do with Konami. That was the game Kojima wanted to make. Fair enough, some form of Act III was cut or something but I had long given up on the game before getting to that point. Was Eve going to show up in Act III or Strangelove or Chico's sister or Chico in a twist or a young Roy Campbell or any of the cast of previous games, even ones that could have been directly linked to this part of the world right now like Paramedic or Sigint (Donald Anderson)?

MGS V was such a gargantuan disappointment and it is the main reason I am highly skeptical of Death Stranding being great.

_-EDMIX-_2950d ago

"It was nothing to do with Konami"

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

sure and this is winning GOTY...

" some form of Act III was cut "

Yes, but don't blame the company that owns the IP...

"MGS V was such a gargantuan disappointment" Not really. Its gameplay elements were amazing, its story was pretty much trash.

Again....its hard to make a game when the publisher is basically limiting what you can and can't do to move units.

But by all means, I'm sure Metal Gear Survival will be your favorite game of all time. I mean...its not Konami's fault after all so it should be a blast and TONS better then MGSV. /s

DarXyde2950d ago

Make it great.

Since Kojima is starting over, he needs to approach the story with care. Avoid loopholes and inconsistencies. I worry that Mikkelsen sounded lost on the story. I don't mind some complexity; I encourage it. It just needs to be coherent when the time comes.

TheOttomatic912950d ago

Doesn't surprise me since during development Phantom Pain Kojima felt copious amounts of dialogue had become outdated, so Death Stranding will probably focus more on visual flair as opposed to exposition heavy cutscenes. If the trailers are any indication this is probably true.

franwex2950d ago

I believe you are correct sir

Number_92950d ago

I'd very much like to play a Kojima game without Kojima dialog/storytelling. I cringed myself into oblivion when I played Phantom Pain every time someone opened their mouth to speak.

NecoTehSergal2950d ago

"A different game has a different story/story-telling narrative than a completely different series!"

No fucking shit sherlock. I mean, this would imply that you see Kojima as a one-trick pony who can only do storytelling one way? Cmon.

which is it?

Content writers have to be hyperbolic.

On n4g, I frequently get so annoyed by comments that I take the time to login so I can downvote someone. Today is such a day. What a pointless comment…

Got the Director's Cut platinum a couple of hours ago.
Ready for DS2 now.

Storm2373d ago

I have been slowly working my way though this game for months. I keep playing other games in between but I want to finish it before DS2.

Knushwood Butt72d ago

I ended up with over 140 hours on it, but I wasn't exactly rushing. Ended up seeing to it that all roads were rebuilt too.
There are still a few Half Life missions left that I think I'll do.

lukasmain73d ago

Man I love this game. Platinumed it and played through it a 2nd time just for fun. I'm day 1 with bells on for the sequel

Video Games Proud To Not Be For Everyone

Plenty of games have made a name for themselves as being proud of the fact they’re not to everyone’s taste over the years.

If you make something for everyone, you please no one.

mkis007130d ago

I mean I can do without nintendo games if given the choice. They are not nearly as mature rated as the average.

Yui_Suzumiya130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

Yeah but I use my Switch OLED primarily for anime booba style games (visual novels and JRPG's) and ultra violent FPS's. Far from kid friendly, lol

JohnBLZ130d ago

The problem with that line of though is that games have never been as much "for everyone" as in 2025.
The only thing that's not for everyone in gaming lately is the gatekeeping. Devs will try to appeal to as many people as they can, but if you dare have your own tastes and prefer something a bit more obscure, then you have "L takes" because at the moment, popular opinion equals right opinion.
So devs should simply own the fact they water down their games and go Hollywood to please everybody. Then indies will go back to being trendsetters that are different from AAAs, instead of being roguelike and gacha copycats.

130d ago
JohnBLZ130d ago

Okay, but "games I'm not meant to love" means I won't play them.
Games are for fun. They're their own art, it's a disservice to reduce them to interactive stories. You can focus on making your audience entertained on a positive way and still stand out.

jznrpg130d ago

No game is for everyone. Some games are more mainstream or casual friendly but there is always someone who won’t like it. Same with anything else
