It Physically Pained Us To Write This Prey Review, But We’ve Done It - Bleeding Cool

Bleeding Cool: "Bethesda Softworks, Arkane Studios, and Human Head Studios’ reboot of Prey should have been met with a ton of fanfare, but the PC problems and rushed reviews killed Prey with faint praise and worthy criticism."

Painful to read this review with words such as 'beoken' and 'episotalry', and I thought Human Head was not involved with the development of this game?

AZRoboto2584d ago

"Elder Scrolls IiI"
"BUt"
"And do Prey gets..."

If he knocks PC Prey for lack of polish and bugs, can we do the same for this review? He doesn't even seem to have played the game.

The only gameplay referenced is the first hour that's available in the demo. It sounds like he just listed the complaints from IGN and picked the midpoint of their two scores.

Bjorn-c-blocker2583d ago

The game runs perfectly. Don't believe the stuff you read. On Steam the game has a 90% positive review. How can that be for a broken game?

CaptainObvious8782583d ago

I can't remember the last time reviewers got it so wrong about about a game.

This is just another nail among thousands in the coffin of game reviewer's credibility.

Lon3wolf2584d ago

IGN re-reviewed it after the latest patch, pushing the score from the original 4 to 8.

littlezizu2584d ago

No they didn't. IGN USA gave it a 4 while IGN Canada gave it a 8.

2584d ago
littlezizu2584d ago

PPL disagreeing it was meant to Sarcasm. Geez next time i will add /S.
Either way IGN ready to rereview Prey after patch but not driveclub stating during that time games will be reviewed on product during the time not after patches

Lon3wolf2583d ago

It was neither it was IGN UK :P

They are going to get to the point they are going to just stop doing PC ports if this keeps up. I remember the Angry Joe review of Arkham Knight just ripped it because of the shoddy PC version. Problem is.. It was a good game on ps4.

NordicRainy2584d ago

Arkham Knight had a LOT of problems beside the horrendous PC port.

Muadiib2584d ago

Not really, it's a class game other than it being a poor port.

Goldby2584d ago

@Muadiib

im agreeing with NordKev.

the fact they marketed the game with a brand new original villian was a joke when it just turned out to be red hood. ai wasn't that smart and frame rate wasnt hat stable

InTheLab2583d ago

Arkham Knight was trash and they ruined Red Hood....and Death Stroke...and the Batmobile

Muadiib2584d ago

It's not a port, the console versions are the ports.

Nitrowolf22584d ago

I dont see anything wrong with that though. The user had gotten a copy of his preferred platform, and if Batman was a bad PC port then his score/review should reflect that, not of how much better the ps4 version is.

Thats "problem" is on the developers part and IMO if they produce a bad port they should be held accountable despite other versions being better or the game in generL being good werent for its issues.

SubZtx2584d ago

For indie youtube guys you can have a point, but big professional websites like IGN they should be basically reviewing every copy of the game just because it is crappy on the least selling platform which PC likely is in most cases (I have a GTX 1070 so hush) the consoles are going to sell a lot more copies. So now you got a metacritic floating out there with a 4 on a game that on the 2 best selling platforms is say a 7.5. That is a big difference. Of course in the review they should say "PC version is crap avoid like the plague".

PygmelionHunter2584d ago

Completely agree with Nitrowolf2.

both the developers of said version of the game and its publisher should be held responsible for releasing a shoddy port of the game.

It's the reader's problem if they don't read through the review to find out it's the PC port that's broken/incomplete. Focusing on its review score is just dumb, and certainly NOT the reviewer's fault for wanting to play it on PC.

Bjorn-c-blocker2583d ago

This is actually a pc game.
Go check steam reviews these "issues" don't exist. The game sites are just so angry that Bethesda has abandoned them.

Chumdiddy2584d ago (Edited 2584d ago )

It's just not a good game. While I'm not at all a graphics wh**e, it looks like it was made in 2007. It sincerely could pass for a visually basic, 2nd year game from last gen.

Gameplay just doesn't feel right. It's not atrocious or anything but I'd recommend a wait for price drop or rent.

It does have some decent qualities, btw. They're just overshadowed by horrible visuals (when clearly trying to look "realistic"), bad performance and boring/bad gameplay mechanics. The story itself is pretty solid but even it is poorly told, IMO.

EDIT: I had someone PM saying that my gpu may be to blame for the bland/bad textures and it generally looking very 2007 (ha). It apparently has issues with certain Nvidia cards.

Muadiib2584d ago

A 6 is laughable, it's a good game, easily deserving an 8 or more.

All Hopes I Had For A Prey Sequel Have Been Crushed — Well Done, Microsoft

The magnificent Prey was once again abandoned as Microsoft disregarded Arkane Austin's achievements and crucified it just for Redfall.

RaidenBlack29d ago

well, not entirely ... the main Arkane studio i.e Arkane Lyon's still there ...
Its only that, the sequel will take more time now ... after Blade & Dishonored 3

MrBaskerville28d ago

But who knows, Dishonored 3 could have been Austins next project, so might be cancelled.

RaidenBlack27d ago

Dishonored is Lyon's flagship IP ... Austin only assisted in the first one, the sequel was wholly developed at Lyon whilst Austin developed Prey.
If Dishonored 3 was indeed greenlit ... rest assured, it would've been helmed primarily by the Lyon studio.

-Foxtrot29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Not even this Prey

Still longing for a sequel to the original Prey with Tommy

The studio didn't even want to call this Prey, it was just Bethesda being dicks to them for some reason.

RaidenBlack28d ago

MS closed Roundhouse Studios (ex-Human Head Studios) as well

Yui_Suzumiya28d ago

Yeah, that's who was going to do the original sequel.

bunt-custardly28d ago

Don't worry there are some other games in development that might fill that void. Look up Vigilancer.

isarai28d ago

Came here to say this, my hooes for a Prey sequel died when this "Prey" came out

Profchaos28d ago

Prey 2017 still hurts to play because what could have been looked so incredible

Profchaos28d ago

Same Bethesda basically screwed over the original developer team human head back around 2011 so it was really never going to come despite a honestly amazing trailer. I liked prey 2017 but it always held a stink of disappointment due to what we never got

FinalFantasyFanatic28d ago

I really didn't like this game, tried it because of how loved the original Prey was, played the demo of this one and thought it was garbage, it didn't feel nice/fun to play.

LostPotato29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Keep dreaming then as Prey and Dishonored 2 did not sell well enough to get sequels.

Hence we got Deathloop and Redfall instead.

RaidenBlack28d ago

lol, Deathloop came from Prey: Mooncrash idea

Unknown_Gamer579428d ago

To everyone who cheered MS’s acquisitions, we told you so…

Inverno28d ago

Those people will just argue that Arkane Austin and Tango would've been shut down either way.

MrBaskerville28d ago

Zenimax allready put them in a tight spot by demanding them to do a multiplayer title. So it's not unlikely, considering how bad the game performed. They didn't stand a chance. MS had the money to save them and to correct Zenimax' mistakes.

10 Commercial Flops That Are Actually Good Games

BY JOHN: There are lots of commercially successful games that are, to put it mildly, not very good. Whether they launch broken, or they’re just a cookie-cutter version of another title, some games just hit the jackpot when it comes to sales numbers.

But, what about those games that are well worth playing but don’t sell well? It can be too easy to miss a great gaming experience just because it wasn’t a commercial smash hit, despite having a strong story or interesting gameplay mechanics. This can be due to poor marketing, the timing not being right in the market or dozens of other reasons.

Here are ten games that flopped commercially but are well worth checking out.

Prey shouldn't have been connected to the original, they should've changed the name. It looked good and had decent exploration but it was way too long and the ending was trash. Definitely gets more praise in the comments than it should.

FinalFantasyFanatic219d ago

I actually hated Prey after playing the demo, for me, it felt so bad to play, I agree that it gets more praise than it deserves. Most of this list is fine though, there are some really good games on there.

Nacho_Z218d ago

I couldn't get on with Prey either, sounded great on paper but I didn't enjoy it at all. I don't think I like Arkane, tried to get into Dishonored years before and it left me cold.

Concertoine218d ago

Did you play it on ps4/xbone? If so, yeah, it played terribly on those machines. 90 second load times, horrible input lag.

I couldnt enjoy the game until it got updated for Series X

Barlos218d ago

I really want to like Prey. I've gone back to it a few times on my Steam Deck but I don't know, I just can't get into it. Mind you, I'm not the biggest fan of immersive sims

FinalFantasyFanatic218d ago

@Concertoine,

Actually it was PS4, I don't recall anyone mentioning that it was console specific at the time though.

Sciurus_vulgaris218d ago

I liked Prey (2017), but I think the original Prey was more polished and arguably better game of the two. If Bethesda had been so cheap, Prey (2017) could have trade marked as “Nightmare on Talos” or “Typhon “.

Minute Man 721218d ago

Played the demo of Prey (2007)

Never got around to actually playing it but it's BC so one day (soon) I'll hunt it down

shinoff2183218d ago

I really liked prey, but I'll add I never finished. Dishonored, was a borefest for me I couldn't get into it with multiple times of trying.

gigoran8218d ago

The ORIGINAL Prey sequel looked dope as F. I would have loved to have played that instead of what we got.

jznrpg219d ago (Edited 219d ago )

I couldn’t get into Prey when I played it. I own it so I’ll try again someday.

Petebloodyonion218d ago

I think the issue with Prey is how the media were infatuated with everything done by Arkane Studio and the Dishonored Universe.
For some reason they need to remind us all the time that Dishonored is among the best games and everything related to that suddenly becomes near perfection.
cue the same treatment for Deathloop.

Crows90218d ago

Dishonored 1 is incredible. The 2nd is pretty darn good too ...

All their other games have been average to bad.

FinalFantasyFanatic218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

Idk if I agree, I never really hear Dishonoured being talked about a lot, I think the amount of attention Deathloop got was fine for what it was, then again, I never really cared that much for Arkane Studio's games.

gold_drake218d ago

omg. Blur was soo good, still have my copy :)

LoveSpuds218d ago

I think the problem was releasing at the same time as another great racer, Split Second, no doubt the cannibalised each others potential sales.

Both great games but I think I prefer Split Second, just about!!

Arkane Studios is Leaving Money on the Table Without a Prey 2

Game Rant Writes "With Redfall's launch on the horizon, Arkane Studios shouldn't miss out on the renewed popularity of a particular genre with a sequel to Prey."

It was ok but not a great game . Plus gamepass will prevent physical sales. It’s not a system seller type of game

SimpleSlave436d ago

One of the best game of the generation with the worst name ever. Neuro Shock (not Prey 2017) alongside the Dishonored franchise should be given the 1st Party treatment by Microsawft.

Why buy absolute monster studios like Arkane just to waste them away making Gamepass bait? Don't you have Rare for that? Soon you'll have ActivisionBlizzard for that too.

Give this Redfall: Rebellion version of the game to a low tier studio and let Arkane make a true 1st Party Single Player game about vampires called Redfall.

SMH...

shinoff2183436d ago

I enjoyed prey but if I remember right the original stuff had you playing a alien bounty hunter. Would've been so much more fun
