Let’s talk about that ‘bad review’ of Breath of the Wild

Polygon: "This morning brought news that Jim Sterling, the well known video games raconteur who definitely does not participate in groupthink, was under attack. Jim could bait someone by reading a phone book in the wrong tone of voice, and everyone expects this so, dear God, what did he say this time."

MRMagoo1233012d ago (Edited 3012d ago )

"everyone expects this so, dear God, what did he say this time."

He said what he thought as he usually does and that's why so many love him , he doesn't crumple under the weight of fanboys, they only make him stronger like goku 😂 as he says "thank God for him" one of the only honest reviewers out there.

Erik73573012d ago

No more honest than the people who gave it 10s....

He gave his opinion of it, honestly, just like the majority of other reviews who praised it honestly...

Gazondaily3012d ago

Absolutely. Love how people are nit picking reviews. The majority of the same people here celebrating this review will no doubt have thrown their toys out of the pram from THAT review which shall not be named that the author of this site actually works for.

You have to respect all reviewes as long as they justify their opinions in the contents of their review. Jim raised some concerns which ruined his enjoyment of the game and thats absolutely fair enough.

And we've seen these kind of divisive reviews recently:

Uncharted 4- petition
No Mans Sky- DDOS
TLOU- Perpetual merkage for the rest of eternity for the score of 7.5

iDadio3012d ago

Indeed but sadly if your opinion differs from other peoples it means you're wrong :(

rocketpanda3012d ago

Nobody is disputing the overhelming good scores from outlets and neither did Jim. All he did was point out the flaws he thought the game had.

Yet when he stated why it is a 7,green tight wearing Zelda fans swamped his comments section and took down his site. For a game that many gave 10 you of thought they would spend more time playing it than attack people.

Erik73573012d ago

*wow

Never seen the n4g community so harsh on a game. It really shows the fanboy roots in this site and how they are loyal to what ever system they play on. P.s Its not hard to tell its ps4 ;)

-Foxtrot3012d ago

@Erik7357

Whaaa Whaaa Ponies this, Ponies that

It's basically the "Lets Blame Russia" of this site.

morganfell3012d ago

"You have to respect all reviewes as long as they justify their opinions in the contents of their review."

That is a sentiment with which I agree but the issue at hand is by far and large most sites do little to nothing in the attempt to justify their opinions. They stand on the fact that, "Well, its my opinion."

They have no written standards to which they unwaveringly adhere, nor do they have an editor in chief that does their level best to remove words such as "I", "I want", or "I like" and the corresponding lack of objectivity wrought by such usages.

Make no mistake Septic, I agree with you on this matter - mark that as a red letter day. It is simply that most people only concern themselves with their agreement with the final number at the bottom of the page and not an outlet's lack of a concise, methodical, and justified method of evaluation.

thekhurg3012d ago

Not really. There is an expectation of Zelda that most reviewers will force a score just to follow along. Regardless of quality.

There are things that this Zelda game does that other games have done and got knocked in score over, while Zelda got a free pass. It's an absurd double standard. But that's what happens in this industry so it's whatever.

BlackTar1873012d ago

poor Erik show us where Sony touched you, we'll make them pay.

deathtok3012d ago

@Foxtrot

+1 for the phrase "whaaa whaaa ponies"

Kokyu3012d ago

Except when you look at people who gave it a 10/10 they, not all but most, in most cases got the game and console for free and early from Nintendo.

Imalwaysright3012d ago (Edited 3012d ago )

"Never seen the n4g community so harsh on a game"

It's exactly what happened to Overwatch when it won GOTY last year at the game awards. As soon as it won, the downplaying and the excuses as to why the game wasn't deserving began immediately http://n4g.com/news/1989824...

@ MRMagoo123

Agree 100% about Jim's brutal honesty but that doesn't mean that every reviewer out there isn't as trustworthy as he is.

The majority of othe reviewers are probably nintendo sycophants. Seems botw got a free pass on issues most other games don't get away with.

conanlifts3012d ago

I have no issue with a score of 7. But i do find it ridiculous how many people, who have never played the game, look at videos, or opinions and claim the game does not deserve a 10. It did not get a free pass, it is just a great game.

3012d ago
PFFT3012d ago

I highly agree! Ohh look i can set the grass on fire and it spreads!!!!! Instant 10/10 Well guess what Farcry has been doing this since FarCry 2 WOOOOP DIIDY DOOOO.

dillydadally3012d ago

The 95% of all reviewers out there, many of which have panned other Nintendo games, that gave this game between a 9 and a 10 are all Nintendo sycophants? What a stupid comment. Why are people so dumb as to upvote it?

Imalwaysright3012d ago

@ dillydadally,

I have no idea! I really don't! Sure some reviewers might be biased but to believe that all of them are is, just irrational thinking.

cheetah3010d ago

It doesn't get away with anything, the game is nearly perfect. All Jim is doing is fabricating issues to justify a skewed score and ultimately create publicity for himself, fake news basically. And for the record, PS4 is my platform of choice and will continue to be, but anyone who denies the greatness of this game is either jealous or a liar.

As a huge fan of Zelda breath of the wild ( who gave a user review of 10) i see no problem with his review. Its not even a bad review.

dohji3012d ago

If he's anything like Goku we should all lend him our energy to defeat the angry Nintendo fanboys.

UltraNova3012d ago

Anti-Fanboy Spirit Ball ? Hell yeah!

demonddel3012d ago

So you saying if he rated one of Sony beloved games like the Last of Us or God of War Sony people would starking this man but because this Nintendo and a lot of you know who is upset because Zelda Botw is a better game than horizon now they wanna pretend like they are supporting Jim

MRMagoo1233012d ago (Edited 3012d ago )

I don't give a crap what he scores Sony games , I only just got a ps4 3 weeks ago , wtf is with you fanboys and saying anyone that doesn't take it up the arse by MS or Nintendo is a Sony fanboy? get a grip

I have been a patreon supporter of jim Stirling for years and have been subbed to his YouTube for ages

Any time you fanboys see something you don't agree with it's "Sony fanboy"

DanteVFenris6663012d ago

@mrmagoo

People think your a fan boy when you act like one.

Ect close minded and ignorant to any game that isn't on your console. You can be a fanboy of the PS4 from day 1. No amount of time is required.

PFFT3012d ago

lol now you guys are getting delusional. BOTW better than Horizon LMFAO! Hopefully you get featured in the stupid comment of the Month page.

GTgamer3012d ago

Deadddd I love how yAll making this about Sony fans it's sad wtf they do that's the thing about you Nintendo fans yall act just like your games........ CHILDISHHHHHH.

meka26113012d ago

Never been a fan of Jim Sterling, has that holier than thou attitude. That being said 7 out of 10 is not a bad score, but everyone's right, sony fanboys went ape shit when uncharted 4 had the same thing happen. Now we shall see if people will defend when a good reviewer gives Horizon a 7 out of 10 since that's what it deserves. I don't think any game deserves a perfect 10.

7/10 is NOT a "bad" review in any realm.

Perjoss3012d ago

7 is a good score, what's more important though is the reasons for the score, what did the reviewer like or hate, are they things we are likely to hate also? It's important to read reviews rather than just looking at the almost meaningless number.

iDadio3012d ago

Knowing someone gave the game they are enjoying a 7 must mean they will actually somehow enjoy the game less than they was.

andrewsquall3012d ago

Yeah but this is Polygon who is saying this so its 100% warranted.

Erik73573012d ago

That's the crazy part, 7 only looks bad next to a bunch of 10s!

Chaos_Order3012d ago

Try telling that to the people who think 7 is supposed to mean "average/mediocre" and anything below 7 means "terrible, broken, unplayable." -_-

In no other entertainment medium is that the case, but oh no, games are sooooo different, and not because of butthurt children who can't bear to see their hyped games get criticised even slightly. And remember your opinion must always be within the general consensus or you're just trying to be edgy!

But yeah, to me, a 7 means a game is worth getting. Heck, even some games I'd give a 6 I'm glad I played.

BrianOBlivion3012d ago (Edited 3012d ago )

People don't generally spend money on games that they haven't already got a reasonable expectation of enjoyment from, so the base of experience from which they make assessments is skewed upward.
I like to play (or at least try) a broad spectrum of genres and styles, which opens me up to a greater likelihood of disappointment, but I still haven't played very many games that I would rate less than a 5.
The last really mediocre game I played through was probably the last Star Trek game which I would rate a 4/10. It was a little tedious but I still enjoyed it to some degree -it just didn't earn a place in my collection. Even the much maligned (and broken) Colonial Marines sits on my shelf for the fun that I did get out of it.

JackBNimble3012d ago

If a 7/10 upsets Nintendo fans then they really need to get a life.
People are to willing to give games 10s when very few really deserve that score.

QUIMICOMORTAL3012d ago

they got almost pure 7s the last two years!

Let's not, oh look at this when a publication like Edge give a game 10 you know it must offer something very special. Personally this review of the game is pure shit. Obviously he wouldn't know an amazing game if it smacked him in the face.

iDadio3012d ago

His reviews focus on the negative points so that you don't go into a game blindly, its a nice way to get a rounded idea about if the game is worth your time if you know both sides of the coin.

And lets face it, the game is not a 10 if it has any negatives. 10 is the PERFECT score but as we are well aware the game has some frustrating elements to some people and from a technical perspective the performance is mixed. These are both points that would reduce any other games score, you cant reduce a games score for the water graphics and then let this have a free pass despite technical issues "because its Zelda".

And no I am not bashing Zelda, it aint my cup of tea but there is too much evidence of media bias to warrant the scores it is getting. Reviews should be fair all round, not picking and choosing what games get their score reduced for the same problems.

DanteVFenris6663012d ago (Edited 3012d ago )

You should play it, I can guarantee it would be your cup of tea if you tried it. Especially if you enjoyed open world games like horizon. Some of Jims problems with the game were actually positives for most people like the weapon system.

Also many reviews ignored skyrim, witcher 3 and others technical issues. Which are frankly worst than Zeldas were. This isn't some bias towards Zelda like you seem to think.

Not every Nintendo game gets a 97-98 metascore. When Nintendo makes a bad game the media lets us know. Metroid other m

Gazondaily3012d ago (Edited 3012d ago )

So Edge over Jimquisition because....?

How many games have you reviewed?

"Personally this review of the game is pure shit."

Why? Because he actually bothered to substantiate his points.

DanteVFenris6663012d ago

I guess you weren't bothered when he didn't substantiate his points for horizon.

Trez12343012d ago

I love zelda but I really don't think if someone never liked zelda to like this one. It's a fantastic game but still very much a zelda game. The combat, pace, puzzles etc..some people didn't like them then and I can't really see that changing with this game.

For us zelda fans this game is a masterpiece.

l3w1s3012d ago

Jim IS a Zelda fan. He even tweeted a list of his 5 top Zelda games. He just didn't like this entry.

DanteVFenris6663012d ago (Edited 3012d ago )

It breaks a lot of Zelda conventions I'd say.

Trez12343012d ago

I didn't know Jim was a zelda fan too. If he is then I'm suprised that he doesn't rate this one because I personally think this is as close as a zelda game we all dreamed of.

l3w1s3012d ago

@Trez

You might want to read his review, just to see his opinion. Many people just cling on to the score, but he actually liked the game. He just didn't like some of the core systems within the game (really didn't like).

Trez12343012d ago

^^I tried to go on it but can't. I guess it's still down.

l3w1s3012d ago

@Trez
Yeah, it seems the website is still down, though, iirc, there is a cached version somewhere. He also did an episode of Jimquisition on his Youtube channel about this whole situation, addressing the negative parts of the game and the witchhunt, so you can also check out that.

Trez12343012d ago

^^ thanks for the heads up. Going on YouTube now.

You are part of the problem, Edge doesn't set the bar for others to follow. You only seem to want to respect reviews that validate your opinion or abritrary score and call anything that doesn't follow it "pure shit". Pure shit is a 0, not a 7.

Laura K who features a lot on Jim's podcast and also a critic gave the game a 10, yet they could still exchange why one thought it wasn't and the other not.

Nintendo fans are without a doubt the worst gaming has to offer at times.

And finally I found one.

feraldrgn3012d ago (Edited 3012d ago )

7/10 is NOT a bad review, jesus.
Jim even said he liked the game & that the 7/10 is implied as a good score (which it is because it's over 5).
Jim's a fan of Zelda just as I am, but I also am of the same opinion that certain flaws prevent it from being a 10/10.

There's also a few 6/10 reviews by other people.

yeahright23012d ago

That's the 10 point scale for you. we're conditioned because of schools grading us to think that 70% is just "OK" at best. If we have to put a number to it, I'd argue for a 5 point scale. Even a 5 star system with half stars would be better. 2 and half out of five is average or almost good to most people, but a 5 out of 10 is viewed as complete rubbish.

Inside the ‘Dragon Age’ Debacle That Gutted EA’s BioWare Studio

The latest game in BioWare’s fantasy role-playing series went through ten years of development turmoil

In early November, on the eve of the crucial holiday shopping season, staffers at the video-game studio BioWare were feeling optimistic. After an excruciating development cycle, they had finally released their latest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and the early reception was largely positive. The role-playing game was topping sales charts on Steam, and solid, if not spectacular, reviews were rolling in.

AAA has gone downhill as they focus on huge profits. Indie and other smaller games however have been amazing not chasing trends and the next big thing.

Redemption-6441d ago

In all honesty, a significant majority of indies and smaller games fail. At best a you might hear about 10-20 indies that get attention or do well, but 100s more fail. AAA games can still be the bread and butter of the industry, but greedy executives would kill a good game if it doesn't make them a lot of money

Cacabunga40d ago

I don’t game much anymore as i used to. Last big game i played was Stellar Blade. Almost didn’t touch the console since.
I don’t have much backlog for the first time in a long time. Maybe others enjoy what’s coming, but I’m losing feeling a little

Ethereal41d ago

Nail on the head. AAA has lost the magic and focused on profits and "player engagement". Gaming is an art form, and like always the CEO fat cats roll in to capitalize at the cost of innovation, passion, wild experimentation. We need a major realignment in the industry and it starts with gamers voting with their wallets.

Killer2020UK41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

I think that's already happening, we're seeing commercial successes in studios like Larion and whoever made Kingdom Come for example. Double Fine is another good example. Studios who are filled with and run by people who give a fuck that aren't hamstrung by money men. That's the answer and consumers are favouring it more than the soulless AAAs that have been put out. I don't doubt there is talent at Ubisoft for example but when they're told exactly what the end product needs to be by people who don't know what consumers actually want, it's always going to result in the same rehashed but slightly shinier slop.

Ethereal41d ago

Exactly. I do believe we are starting to see a shift in consumer habits. The market is saturated with GaaS and battlepasses, seasons, etc. We can't all play the same four games until the end of time. Fatigue is setting in and the industry needs to get back to making new experiences rather than chasing the latest "money maker".

Killer2020UK41d ago

I was wondering whether this is perception or actually happening but it feels to me, as a semi old gamer, there is more choice than ever and as such people are now much choosier about how they spend their time and money gaming. Certainly noticing this when it comes to GaaS as you mentioned, the question always has to be why would I play this instead of what I'm already playing. Anthem is going to have a real hard time prying away people, especially with a premium price tag that screams money men as a decision.

Palitera40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Nah. Devs need to pay the bills. Uninspired games fail, but artsy games usually fail even harder.

PapaBop40d ago

Gamers are voting with their wallets, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Expedition 33, games made by passionate developers who are not being controlled by money men are seeing their work get universal praise and selling extremely well. Meanwhile Outlaws and Veilguard are underperforming. I wonder how many people Ubi and EA had working on those games, in comparison Sandbox have just a core development team of 30 and managed to put something out EA and Ubi can only dream of.

The underlying problem though lays with how EA and Ubi execs react to these sort of things. Seems like they'd rather just lay off good developers and focus their efforts on their cash cows as opposed to change their development philosophies.

The question might be, was four years long enough to make a discernible writing contribution to a video game based on how long development cycles are these days?
