Which company will make the leap into 9th generation?

All I know is that the Ps5 will most likely reign supreme, with whoever has the guts to compete

gamer11383044d ago

Doubtful. Last couple of generations has seen the previous leader fall behind. PS3 didn't do as well as PS2, Wii-U didn't do as well as Wii, Xb1 hasn't done as well as 360. The more of your previous console you sell the more content your customer base is with what they have. Also it takes a solid 2-3 years before multiplats transition exclusively to the new gen so customers have less incentive. This is why Pro and Scorpio exist. Sony and MS want you to stay within their walls while incrementally upgrading your experience.

If Sony pull the trigger on PS5 too early they will also risk alienating Pro customers who have only just upgraded. Pro and Scorpio also set the precedent that you should definitely not buy a new console at launch because 3 years later they could launch a more powerful, better version. By that point because multi-plats have left the old systems behind you won't have missed out much by sticking with your old system.

chrisx3044d ago

you know nothing of what you speak.

naruga3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

why Gamingbolt is so rushed about 9th generation?? PS4 pro is here to stay and prolong PS4 life...PS4 library is just starts blooming and multiply .....none... except some MS stuck fans ask for generation leap , am i right Gamingbolt ??? also the question is already answered -Scorpio made the leap for next gen ..Sony doesnt need to as they will waste Scorpios potential with their current system PS4

bouzebbal3043d ago

PS will be out first, and same story will happen again.

_-EDMIX-_3043d ago

Will the PlayStation 3 only lost a significant amount of market share because I don't genuinely believe the numbers of PlayStation 2 sold was realistic for the market

I believe that market share has been permanently lost to Microsoft and Nintendo and that Sony's true install base is probably in the ballpark of 100 million or so.

That being said if Sony actually continues to maintain the practice of having their main teams release new properties I believe very strongly that the PlayStation 5 is going to perform similar to what you're seeing with the PlayStation 4.

At this point you have to understand that Sony is actually the only company right now that's only competing with themselves in fact any points to be made about Sony in the past always seem to be in comparison with themselves....

Nintendo needs to change and they need to invest in order to compete the same with Microsoft Sony actually doesn't really need to do anything other than what they've been doing you're technically the only company that's even past that 90 million Mark several times now in the PlayStation 4 looks like it's going to be the 4th console that they've done that with.

I have no clue what you're talking about in regards to Pro consumers because if you own a PlayStation 4 Pro you actually still own a PlayStation 4, the PlayStation Pro was not an individual platform with its own market so like other posters have stated we all don't really know what on Earth you're talking about.

Sony and Microsoft that actually both stated the purpose behind the pro in the Scorpio they both made it clear that both devices are made as upgrades to their current devices and nothing more

both companies actually both stated they're not making exclusives for those upgrades so I'm not sure how you got that that's what they want despite them saying something completely different Sony has even come out and stated that they indeed will release a PlayStation 5 so again unless you have a link to prove otherwise no one really knows what you're talking about it literally sounds like you've made up your own news lol

jaycptza3043d ago

PS1 > PS2 now say something @gamer1138

yomfweeee3043d ago

Sony has dominated since they started. They only lost last gen because Nintendo got lucky with their gimmicky crap. PS3 still had the best games.

Obscure_Observer3043d ago

@naruga

"PS4 pro is here to stay and prolong PS4 life...PS4 library is just starts blooming and multiply"

Totally agreed.

"none... except some MS stuck fans ask for generation leap"

How exactly MS fans are asking for generation leap again? Scorpio isn´t even out yet and i haven´t seen any Xbox fans asking for a new system.

ItMatters3043d ago

That's three years of playing games though. I've always bought the latest and greatest. To be honest if Microsoft had not announced the Scorpio then I would have got the pro when it launched. I'm gonna buy a used ps4.

andrewsquall3043d ago

@ItMatters Great idea, plenty of people are selling their PS4s when they buy the Pro just like I did. Don't forget to pick up PS Plus too and about 5 stellar exclusive games released for the console so far this year.

andyo133043d ago

There won't be another "generation", Sony killed that with the PS4 Pro. Each generation change is incredibly destructive to the amount of work they put into establishing consoles into homes, it's an effective reset button for everyone in the industry. They've taken a page out of Apples book with iPhone and how the games are compatible across a wide range of ageing devices but later devices will perform better or have better graphics. I think this is a good move as it means your console you buy will last longer and if you want improved graphics/performance, go get a pro or a pro 2 when that eventually comes out. Once internet gets good enough we'll probably be playing something similar to playstation now, you won't own the console, just pay a monthly subscription like Netflix and play what ever game you want probably. It's something that's already here and will slowly take over without us even realising.

QUIMICOMORTAL3043d ago

But ps one dominated and ps2 dominated even more. You could say that Sony learned their lesson with ps3 and shouldn't make the same mistake.

But going by your same argument, Sony has more chance to release ps5 in two years despite alienating pro owners, than MS or Nintendo that have NEW consoles this year.

The next Playstation will reign supreme after the Scorpio reigns supreme for a year or two. Then the next Xbox will reign supreme until the Playstation after the next is released. See a pattern here? Hardware progression is what any serious gaming hobbyist revels in. There isnt anything wrong with being a fan of a particular brand. Claiming your brand will "reign supreme" sounds like something either a 4th grader would say, or someone with feelings of inadequacy would say behind the safety of their computer screen. You should go into a bar and make that announcement. Then enjoy being a virgin the rest of your life lol.

madmonkey013043d ago

xbox has never reigned supreme, and neither will scorpio

GorillaTact3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

You didnt understand the point I made.

_-EDMIX-_3043d ago

The way I see it I'm not sure it even matters who goes first I believe if Sony continues to deliver solid lineups they're going to continue to dominate the market.

Releasing first then an ultimately lead to 360 selling more, the PlayStation 3 still sold more even at a higher price point

So I don't think anyone releasing first or second really matters in the grand scheme of things , whether it be Nintendo or Microsoft whoever releases a platform before or after Sony is still going to have to compete directly against them in order to take away that market share because the market is very much trying to tell the industry that they want this company to continue to produce this type of content and the only way that market share shifts towards Microsoft or Nintendo is if one of those two companies actually honestly begins competing against Sony team for Team, game for game.

PhoenixUp3043d ago

@ gamer

How was 360, the slowest selling console of the 7th gen, considered the leader? Not to mention that it came in third place in Europe, Asia, and RoW which resulted in it coming in last place worldwide despite selling the best in the biggest market, that being North America.

Not only that but while the other two 7th gen consoles have died, PS3 is still trucking on and still receiving exclusives.

indysurfn3043d ago

Example of exclusive would be LEGEND OF, HERO'S TRAILS OF COLD STEEL.....AND NUMBER II.

THIS GAME KEEPS ME PUTTING MY XBOX ONE, AND PS4 PRO ON STANDBY UNTIL I GET BACK TO THEM.

ItMatters3043d ago

Not a chance, after Scorpio PlayStation will never be aloud to have the most powerful console. Stick to the exclusives angle, because you'll never get to tout power over Xbox again.

danny8183043d ago

lmao supreme over lord bow down sony stock holders!!!!!!

XanderZane3043d ago

The Nintendo Switch is a 9th generation console. These idiots don't know the meaning of next generation. Has nothing to do with what in the hardware. It's a console that doesn't relate to the previous generation. The Switch has absolutely nothing to do with the Wii or Wii U. The Wii was 7th gen and the Wii U was 8th gen. The Switch is now 9th generation. It's the first truth 9th generation game console. Has nothing to do with power, technology or what kind of games it can play in certain resolutions.

Aren't the Nintendo Switch and Project Scorpio basically 9th gen consoles?

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3044d ago

Nintendo Switch is but Scorpio remain to be seen if Microsoft Xbox Division will market it as one or as a more powerful Xbox One.

zivtheawesome3043d ago

scorpio is mid gen and switch IMO is more 8th gen.

PhoenixUp3043d ago

If Switch is 8th gen that makes Wii U 7th gen and Wii 6th gen along with GameCube

FinalFantasyFanatic3043d ago

But the Switch came out earlier because of the failure that was the WiiU, can we argue it's a gen ahead? It's strange for the same console manufacturer to have 2 consoles in one gen (excluding refreshes).

XanderZane3043d ago

@zivtheawesome, PhoenixUp
The Wii is 7th gen, Wii U is 8th gen and the Switch is 9th gen. Pretty simple to follow.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

MasterCornholio3043d ago

Pretty sure the Switch is but Scorpio is being marketed as just another XB1.

3043d ago
_-EDMIX-_3043d ago

In regards to project Scorpio ,not necessarily if you're going to say that you might as well say the 3DS plus or the PlayStation slim or the 360 Elite or anything like that or New Generation platforms I think you're confusing upgrades and different skus with individual markets.

To my understanding the Scorpios not getting exclusive games by Microsoft because it was made to be an upgrade to the Xbox One Phil Spencer himself even stated it is part of the Xbox One family know where did they ever stayed it was a new generation platform with its own titles I have no clue where you got that information from.

SaviorCeez3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

One game developer said that the "Scorpio isn't just a half-assed upgrade (which the PS4 Pro kinda is...), but a full blown next-gen machine that's just backwards-compatible to your current library." And there are some reports saying that it will have "a new and improved dashboard interface."

madmonkey013043d ago

yes pretty much, and both will be DOA

Obscure_Observer3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

Scorpio was NEVER marked or advertised as a next gen console. It´s just an upgraded Xbox One console just like the PS4Pro.

It´s funny really. Insecure fanboys call it "next gen" because this time MS will have the most powerful console, while at the same time they call Switch "next gen" ignoring it as the weaker console of the three. Yes three. Somehow for some reason they choose to leave PS4Pro out of the equation.

SaviorCeez3043d ago

Thats not the case... at all

XanderZane3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

The Nintendo Switch is 9th generation console. The Scorpio is a XB1 upgrade, just like the PS4 Pro. Microsoft even called it an upgrade. On March 3 the 9th generation starts with the Nintendo Switch. Looks like Zelda will be their first AAAE games.

conanlifts3043d ago

Nintendo switch is a 1st Gen hybrid.

stonecold33044d ago (Edited 3044d ago )

I think 9th gen will begin with ps5 and the next box Nintendo will fall beyond as they are a generation beyond and it PS4 Xbox one are still have long ways to go before to even think about ps5 and the next Xbox since switch is an 8th generation console I believe Nintendo will launch a new console sooner by the time the ps5 and the next Xbox appear because if Sony and Microsoft launch the next console by 2019 or 2020 Nintendo might do wii u suition with switch

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3044d ago

Generation is defined by time not power.
Switch is 9th generation/

WickedLester3043d ago

Thank you. I was just about to post this.

Ristul3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

No, from the very beginning, both technology and time played a part, you should read up on the history of hardware generations. When the first big hardware leap happened, that was considered the new generation of consoles, time was off course needed to make those breakthroughs, but it was the hardware innovations that determined the new generations, not just some random time bracket.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3043d ago

@Ristul
The media doesn't decides when a new generation comes. Every brand new system from any of the console manufacture that isn't a revision or add of their current is dubbed as a new platform.
Not same.

If people want to throw power into the definition of generation. Then today kids are better than everyone else on the planet.

Ristul3043d ago

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory: The media? I guess you mean medium?

A new platform is not a new generation, do you know how many console manufacturers there were in the early days of video games, and how many consoles were released? If every new console back in those days would translate to a new generation, we would be on a 3 digit generation now, not the 8'th generation. As times goes by, we will reach a point of diminishing returns were there will simply be platforms, not generations. Generations is a combination of hardware advancing in complexity and the time it takes to reach those milestones.

Tussin1873043d ago

So by your logic so is the Scorpio right? 360 came out 4 years after OGXbox. This is technically the same time frame isn't it? Just saying. People want the use the BC as an excuse as to why it's just a mid gen upgrade.

All systems should be BC from now on as long as they stick with AMD and x86 architecture. It's much easier. Sony won't let the competition (well not really a competition anymore going by Phil's words) brag about BC anymore. You can definitely check BC off the list from now on.

conanlifts3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

I believe switch is a 1st Gen hybrid. For me it doesn't really fall into the traditional console space, neither does it fall into the handheld space.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 3043d ago
FinalFantasyFanatic3043d ago

Nintendo would be nuts to release another console after the WiiU's failure, there're just about to get the Switch out, it's really expensive and inefficient for them to do another console so soon. They would probably just continue to support the Switch, Nintendo never really tries to compete with Sony and Microsoft on the same footing anyway, they always try to go in a different direction on purpose. Which is not a bad idea in of itself (why compete in the same areas as those two when you could do something else better than them to stand out).

Imalwaysright3043d ago

Oh eddie boy... Nintendo is NOT leaving the home console market. The Switch is a hybrid between home console and handheld and nothing you say will change that. Nintendo and their business model are what define what the Switch is and they're treating the Switch as being the Wii U successor and being the Wii U successor it means that the Switch is their 9th gen console because the Wii U was their 8th gen console and the Wii was....

JasonKCK3043d ago

A handheld that docks and plays through your TV. LOL EDMIX damn

_-EDMIX-_3043d ago

@jason- lol yes!

@ima- this is a portable device, it is not a set-top box back it only play off of the television because of its larger components, therefore they have already officially left the dedicated set-top box console Market.

What Nintendo defines this device is actually irrelevant to the fact it is not a set-top box and which its components are so large that it could only be a set-top box dedicated console it is a portable platform.

If Nintendo called this thing a taco or hamburger are you prepared to just start saying that is fact because they said so? 🙃

Regardless of what Nintendo is calling it and how they're trying to Market it the fact remains it is a portable device it is not a set-top box all their marketing it has nothing to do with for fact would it actually is.

In fact your post doesn't really state what is different about the device that would even make it Akon So it's simply trying to babble about the company's marketing or how their positioning it but that's actually irrelevant to the technical specs of what we actually see as dedicated home consoles

Sorry but you like many other people have failed to actually explain how it is not a portable device.

Like I said before that is like feeding you a hamburger and telling you at the Taco despite the obvious definition of what someone defines that as and then when you asked me how it's a taco I simply start going on a rant on my company's new perspective of the new taco.....

Sorry but it doesn't work that way

I mean Whirlpool or General Electric could come out and have a washing machine that plays Tetris but at the end of the day it's not what we're going to consider a portable device just because they keep calling it a" portable device" doesn't actually mean that's what it is especially if it's simply just a washer or dryer that plays Tetris so why on Earth are you letting a company to find your own simple common sense?

Once again, this is a painfully simple question how is this device not a portable device?

Seriously how much snake will have you purchased?

If this company tells you but it's night time even during the day are you prepared to accept that as a fact because it sounds to me like all logic and Common Sense has been thrown out the window in favor of this company's perspective as opposed to actual facts

One more time how is this not a portable?

Imalwaysright3043d ago

"this is a portable device," It is but that's not just what the Switch is.

"therefore they have already officially left the dedicated set-top box console Market."

It's irrelevant how they do it. What matters is the end result and the end result in terms of functionality isn't different than any other home console that ever existed. Connect the thing to your TV and play your games.

"if Nintendo called this thing a taco or hamburger" I don't care what they call it. All I need to know is the business model they have in place for it and how they positioned their device in the market and they were very clear about it. Switch is NOT the 3ds successor, it's the Wii U successor and that makes the Switch their 9th gen console. I have no idea what makes you think that you can say in what market the switch is in when you're just a consumer.

"their positioning it but that's actually irrelevant"

Irrelevant? That shows us if the switch is fighting for market share in the home console market or the handheld market.

"Sorry but you like many other people have failed to actually explain how it is not a portable device."

I didn't even try because it IS a portable device however it IS also a home console and since nintendo is focusing on the home console aspect of it, the Switch is the Wii U successor.

Imalwaysright3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

Also I didn't even read your washing machine analogy to the end because washing machines aren't meant to play games. Handhelds and home consoles are meant to play games.

A much better analogy is a hybrid car with petrol engine and electric engines such as the Porshe 918 and a car with just petrol engine such as the Huayra. On the 918 If you want you can drive just using electrical power or with its combustion engine just like the Huayra. The 918 does things that the Huayra can't do however that doesn't change the fact that the 918 just like the Huyara is fighting for market share in the hypercar market and both are considered hypercars.

The Switch might do things that you can't do with the PS4 and X1 such as being portable but that doesn't change the fact that is going to compete with both those consoles for market share and since it's the Wii U successor, The Switch is going to be Nintendo's 9th gen console.

conanlifts3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

Im going with 1st gen hybrid just to mix it up. I don't think its 9th gen though. It doesn't fall into the traditional console space for me.

Also...."a washing machine that plays tetris". This kind of amused me. Its possibly the most random example i have ever seen used. I would bubble up if it were still possible, just for this example.

_-EDMIX-_3043d ago (Edited 3043d ago )

@ima- "this is a portable device," It is but"

No but..

That's it.

All handhelds portable devices regardless will have their own nuances it does not suddenly make them NOT portable devices.

End.

"being portable but that doesn't change the fact that is going to compete with both those consoles for market share"

How can it take market share in a market it's technically not part of because the hardware is too inferior?

The market of PlayStation 4 Xbox One and PC in regards to the games that support those platforms likely will not support the switch unless they were games made that were not demanding so any games that were made specifically to take advantage of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will not be supported on the switch that means they're not in the same Market that technically isn't any different than the PSP or 3DS.

Sorry but based on the rumor of FIFA being a PlayStation 3 port and Skyrim not even being confirmed to be the remaster it is actually very clear they don't share the same markets.

So how could you compete in the market in which your system isn't even to the specs of the current systems? Is Mass Effect coming to this platform? Is Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to this platform? So how could you have an argument that they're in the same Market when they don't share the same games?

So you mean I am setsuna? Dragon Quest Heroes? The same games that are on the PlayStation Vita? 🙃😂😂 28514;

@sd- lol you know I was going to use some wild example.

If we want to call it a hybrid I'm completely fine with that because it essentially is in regards to being a portable that could have the comfort of playing off a television.

It's not completely dedicated to Simply running on the television.

We can add hybrid to the concept of the PSP 2000 3000 and go considering they could also run off the television

I don't really get the idea of people trying to pretend that this is not a portable despite the entire concept actually being that in the first place as to the namesake of the device being called "switch".

From what I've seen from the unboxing it is not impossible to Simply take the hand held out and throw the dock in the garbage and continue to use it as if nothing was wrong.

From what I'm seeing playing this on the television is an option, but the device itself has to be portable first before could ever be anything else.

JasonKCK3042d ago

_-EDMIX-_ You are the only one saying it, and you have clearly had an anti Switch agenda from the start. Seems you want it to be called a 'handheld' for a reason. Just in case Switch turns out to be hot you don't want the sales to be compared to you know what. So you can cry foul when convenient.

_-EDMIX-_3042d ago (Edited 3042d ago )

@jason- I'm not the only one that's calling this what it is in regards to being a handheld I'm sorry but can you explain how this is not a portable handheld device? Why is it called the switch for? What is it switching to? Why does it have battery life? I'm sorry but you cannot ignore the portability of this device is literally the stupidest thing I've ever heard up if it is not a portable handheld can you please tell me what it actually is?

Me calling at handheld is simply defining the device in regards to it portable attributes.

Btw I'm buying the Switch.

not only did I predict that their next platform was primarily going to actually be portable I was the one that was saying I actually hope that was what it was I even predicted this before Nintendo or even the leaks came out regarding this device , all you have to do is go back and look up my comments.

I'm still waiting for you guys to explain to me how this is not a portable device.

I see lots of disagrees and I see lots of salt and butt hurt when I don't see if a logical explanation to tell me how this is not portable and should not be referred to as a handheld.

I mean the obvious fact that you guys can't even answer that question is even more hilarious and tells me that lots of you guys want to be in denial about what this actually is which is actually quite strange.

https://www.google.com/amp/...

But, I'm the only one?

Is that why no one on here could answer me on why it's not a portable?

🤔

The fact that no one answers that question only tells me how obvious it is to even you that this device is a portable and clearly is going to be referred as a handheld.

Imalwaysright3042d ago

Yes but and a very big but.

Saying that the Switch is just an handheld is the same exact thing as saying that at the Porsche 918 is just an electrical car and that couldn't be further from the truth.

"How can it take market share in a market it's technically not part of because the hardware is too inferior?"

I ask: what does power have to do with it? Wasn't the PS2 technically vastly inferior when compared to the GC and the original Xbox? Wii? Wii U? SNES and Megadrive compared to neo geo?

Multiplatform games? Wii wasn't famous for its 3rd party support. Wii U, Dreamcast... All these consoles were fighting for market share weren't they?

"Mass Effect coming to this platform? Is Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to this platform? So how could you have an argument that they're in the same Market when they don't share the same games?"

Because it will have console quality games with AAA budgets such as Breath of the Wild that are just as much as system sellers has any of those games.

BTW, I don't know if RDR 2 is going to be released on PC but I'm fairly sure that ME will. Does that make the PC a console? Nier is going to be released on the PC and PS4 but not on the X1 and the Switch. Does that mean that the PS4 is part of the PC market or is it the PC that is part of the console market? If its the later does that mean the X1 (won't ask about the switch because I know your stance) isn't part of it? Man can't wait for you to tell me if the PC is part of the console market... despite its business model being COMPLETELY different than the ones you find consoles.

What handheld does splitscreen

_-EDMIX-_3043d ago

Switch.

I mean you have to understand that simply because it has split screen does not mean it is not a portable device because you have to question what does the term switch mean what are they talking about? So the people I saw with footage playing it outside what were they doing? Why does it have a screen? What is all this about battery life? I'm sorry but you cannot keep ignoring the obvious fact that this device is a handheld, it is the stupidest thing I've seen on this site thus far by Fanboys absolutely desperate to put this in the conversation of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The biggest draw of this damn device is that it is a portable that can play on the television for god sakes its namesake is based on the concept of switching from both , so how on Earth is it not a handheld?

Nothing is Stopping the PSP or Playstation Vita or 3DS or anything else for that matter from having split screen that does not suddenly mean it is not a portable or not a handheld that's simply means it's a handheld that does split screen.

That's like saying the next PSP is going to add a GPS and I say

" what handheld has a GPS" LMFAO!!!

So when on Earth did a device being portable have to do with specifically having split screen or not? Are you guys literally trying to say that this device cannot be taken on the go in played with outside?

Don't rhetorically asked me what ones have done it in the past in comparison because that's actually irrelevant to what this is, actually tell me how this is NOT a portable device because it's very difficult to understand how anyone's come to that conclusion

It is literally the dumbest Fanboy delusion I've seen in the longest time of my gaming life.

You guys better move aside with that BS LOL

Blu3_Berry3043d ago

Well Nintendo is technically starting the 9th gen console with the Switch so they already made the first move mid-gen for the 8th generation. So assuming when the Playstation 5 and the next Xbox comes out, it will be very interesting to see what they are offering compared to switch. No doubt will be far superior in terms of raw power, but I hope they do more than just boost power and graphic capability.

jaymacx3043d ago

I am kind of Glad Nintendo did it this way because I can save up for PS5/ (Scorpio?). I would hate if all 3 came out at around the same time which has never happened. If Scorpio is their next system then PS5 can have a great launch all by itself. With console gaming having easy to develop for architecture everything should be fine on that end.

The 'Stop Killing Games' initiative is close to its final deadline

Ross Scott—also known as Accursed Farms on YouTube—has been fighting tooth and nail for almost a full year to help spearhead game preservation. Starting after it was announced that Ubisoft's The Crew would be shutting down, permanently ending support for the game, Scott launched the "Stop Killing Games" initiative.

That makes a twofold deadline for the Stop Killing Games initiative. Or, at least, one headed up by Scott: The UK petition, which ends July 14, and the EU Citizens' Initiative, which ends July 3.

If you live in the EU then Please sign this or our game ownership rights and game preservation is
