Doubtful. Last couple of generations has seen the previous leader fall behind. PS3 didn't do as well as PS2, Wii-U didn't do as well as Wii, Xb1 hasn't done as well as 360. The more of your previous console you sell the more content your customer base is with what they have. Also it takes a solid 2-3 years before multiplats transition exclusively to the new gen so customers have less incentive. This is why Pro and Scorpio exist. Sony and MS want you to stay within their walls while incrementally upgrading your experience.

If Sony pull the trigger on PS5 too early they will also risk alienating Pro customers who have only just upgraded. Pro and Scorpio also set the precedent that you should definitely not buy a new console at launch because 3 years later they could launch a more powerful, better version. By that point because multi-plats have left the old systems behind you won't have missed out much by sticking with your old system.

Will the PlayStation 3 only lost a significant amount of market share because I don't genuinely believe the numbers of PlayStation 2 sold was realistic for the market

I believe that market share has been permanently lost to Microsoft and Nintendo and that Sony's true install base is probably in the ballpark of 100 million or so.

That being said if Sony actually continues to maintain the practice of having their main teams release new properties I believe very strongly that the PlayStation 5 is going to perform similar to what you're seeing with the PlayStation 4.

At this point you have to understand that Sony is actually the only company right now that's only competing with themselves in fact any points to be made about Sony in the past always seem to be in comparison with themselves....

Nintendo needs to change and they need to invest in order to compete the same with Microsoft Sony actually doesn't really need to do anything other than what they've been doing you're technically the only company that's even past that 90 million Mark several times now in the PlayStation 4 looks like it's going to be the 4th console that they've done that with.

I have no clue what you're talking about in regards to Pro consumers because if you own a PlayStation 4 Pro you actually still own a PlayStation 4, the PlayStation Pro was not an individual platform with its own market so like other posters have stated we all don't really know what on Earth you're talking about.

There won't be another "generation", Sony killed that with the PS4 Pro. Each generation change is incredibly destructive to the amount of work they put into establishing consoles into homes, it's an effective reset button for everyone in the industry. They've taken a page out of Apples book with iPhone and how the games are compatible across a wide range of ageing devices but later devices will perform better or have better graphics. I think this is a good move as it means your console you buy will last longer and if you want improved graphics/performance, go get a pro or a pro 2 when that eventually comes out. Once internet gets good enough we'll probably be playing something similar to playstation now, you won't own the console, just pay a monthly subscription like Netflix and play what ever game you want probably. It's something that's already here and will slowly take over without us even realising.

The way I see it I'm not sure it even matters who goes first I believe if Sony continues to deliver solid lineups they're going to continue to dominate the market.

Releasing first then an ultimately lead to 360 selling more, the PlayStation 3 still sold more even at a higher price point

So I don't think anyone releasing first or second really matters in the grand scheme of things , whether it be Nintendo or Microsoft whoever releases a platform before or after Sony is still going to have to compete directly against them in order to take away that market share because the market is very much trying to tell the industry that they want this company to continue to produce this type of content and the only way that market share shifts towards Microsoft or Nintendo is if one of those two companies actually honestly begins competing against Sony team for Team, game for game.

In regards to project Scorpio ,not necessarily if you're going to say that you might as well say the 3DS plus or the PlayStation slim or the 360 Elite or anything like that or New Generation platforms I think you're confusing upgrades and different skus with individual markets.

No, from the very beginning, both technology and time played a part, you should read up on the history of hardware generations. When the first big hardware leap happened, that was considered the new generation of consoles, time was off course needed to make those breakthroughs, but it was the hardware innovations that determined the new generations, not just some random time bracket.

A new platform is not a new generation, do you know how many console manufacturers there were in the early days of video games, and how many consoles were released? If every new console back in those days would translate to a new generation, we would be on a 3 digit generation now, not the 8'th generation. Generations is a combination of hardware advancing in complexity and the time it takes to reach those milestones.

Nintendo would be nuts to release another console after the WiiU's failure, there're just about to get the Switch out, it's really expensive and inefficient for them to do another console so soon. A much better analogy is a hybrid car with petrol engine and electric engines such as the Porshe 918 and a car with just petrol engine such as the Huayra. On the 918 If you want you can drive just using electrical power or with its combustion engine just like the Huayra. The 918 does things that the Huayra can't do however that doesn't change the fact that the 918 just like the Huyara is fighting for market share in the hypercar market and both are considered hypercars.

The market of PlayStation 4 Xbox One and PC in regards to the games that support those platforms likely will not support the switch unless they were games made that were not demanding so any games that were made specifically to take advantage of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will not be supported on the switch that means they're not in the same Market that technically isn't any different than the PSP or 3DS.

Sorry but based on the rumor of FIFA being a PlayStation 3 port and Skyrim not even being confirmed to be the remaster it is actually very clear they don't share the same markets.

So how could you compete in the market in which your system isn't even to the specs of the current systems? Is Mass Effect coming to this platform? Is Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to this platform? Because it will have console quality games with AAA budgets such as Breath of the Wild that are just as much as system sellers has any of those games.

BTW, I don't know if RDR 2 is going to be released on PC but I'm fairly sure that ME will. Does that make the PC a console? Nier is going to be released on the PC and PS4 but not on the X1 and the Switch. Does that mean that the PS4 is part of the PC market or is it the PC that is part of the console market? If its the later does that mean the X1 (won't ask about the switch because I know your stance) isn't part of it? Well Nintendo is technically starting the 9th gen console with the Switch so they already made the first move mid-gen for the 8th generation. So assuming when the Playstation 5 and the next Xbox comes out, it will be very interesting to see what they are offering compared to switch. No doubt will be far superior in terms of raw power, but I hope they do more than just boost power and graphic capability.

I am kind of Glad Nintendo did it this way because I can save up for PS5/ (Scorpio?). I would hate if all 3 came out at around the same time which has never happened. If Scorpio is their next system then PS5 can have a great launch all by itself. With console gaming having easy to develop for architecture everything should be fine on that end.

There was a big difference between PS2 and X360. But there will not be that same difference between PS4 and "Scorpio" that justifies an exclusive. Any game made for the new generation can work normally with the PS4.

MS is already trying to do that. We'll see after the reveal. If this thing has all new chips and completly different architecture then the answer becomes more clear.

The Pro just adds some things to the existing architecture. Mainly overclocks, a small bandwidth increase and a beefier GPU that, in simple terms, is right next to the old one. Even the RAM isn't dramatically different.

We will see if the Scorpio follows the same trend.

I saw the rumors about Scoprio using brand new technology such as AMDs new Ryzen CPU paired with their new Vega GPU. Plus 12GBs of GDDR5 ram is vastly superior to the X1s 8 GB DDR3 ram paired with ESRAM.

It does sound like a next gen console due to all the new technology it will use but it's best to see what they reveal before coming to any conclusions.

I also read rumors from Digital Foundry where the Scoprio is just a souped up PS4 Pro type of console.

E3 should be quite interesting.

Got messy with the Xbox One and almost killed the brand. It´s time for a change. Let Sony (who´s winning) show their cards first. PS5 will be the first this time. I hope MS improve their next console over the PS5. Services, Hardware and software wise.

I still have my TurboGrafx-16 with about 50 games. Will probably sell it eventually. Those were fun times though. China Warrior, Bonk, Alien Crush, Dungeon Explorer, The Legendary Ax, Military Madness, Power Golf, Splatterhouse, Cadash and so many other great unique games. A lot of them were exclusive.

It's my favorite system of all time. I'm slowly but surely trying to get a complete collection of all the games that were released on it, but there were so many, and some are hard to find or quite costly.

There were certainly better systems out there, but TG-CD was my first CD based system, and the games on it just blew me away. I think during it's time, I was the only person in my school who actually knew how to pronounce Ys, because most people said "Whys" :)

So many good memories from that system, and I still love playing it. I absolutely love the Macross SRPG and Cotton.:)

PS4 is seriously hitting its stride now developers are truly getting to grips with the hardware. I hope PS5 isn't released anytime soon let this generation truly run its course first. PS4 and SWITCH will do me for the considerable future thanks. The only ones ball aching are xbone users who think more powerful hardware will save the brand, it's all about the SOFTWARE folks... MS take note .

You don´t want to accept but, the reality is Nintendo already started the 9th gen and Sony will be the next. From now on, MS will be the last of the bunch to realease a new console.

6th gen = PS2 - Xbox - Gamecube
7th gen = PS3 - Xbox 360 - Wii
8th gen = PS4 - PS4Pro - Xbox One - Xbox Scorpio - WiiU
9th gen = PS5 - Scorpio Next - Switch.

As long as Sony is delivering first class exclusives, the Playstation will continue to dominate. The main reason Playstation is in the lead this generation is because of the goodwill Sony has built up over the last two decades as a result of always delivering games each generation and in 2017 has once again shown why the Playstation dominates. In the first two months alone there are 6 major releases unavailable anywhere else and with releases like Yakuza 0, NiOh and Horizon: Zero Dawn, the PS4 is in a league of its own. Even if Microsoft releases Scorpio as a 9th Generation console which it actually is, to sustain any kind of momentum will require the company to be willing to invest in new IPs, something that Microsoft has shown ist is unwilling to do this gen.

Nintendo made the first move with its Switch. Microsoft will follow with Scorpio although it is unclear if it is a mid gen update (Microsoft is in for a PR disaster again).

Sony is in no need for a 9th generation, they can take their time to make something special since they are ruling the market almost with no competition at all.

Scorpio is XBox One upgrade. Microsoft already said this. So no, it's not 9th gen. It's 8th gen just like the PS4 Pro. The Switch is 9th generation.

Only time will tell, but I firmly believe we will see Scorpio exclusives. Thus making it the first "next generation" console. I also believe that, if we look at world wide sales over the life of each system, Sony came out on top (ps1,2,and 3) with the exception of the wii. That's the pattern. It's not because of power. This is because of the most important of all things, the games. I don't see Sony changing their stance on games any time soon. So I think they will continue to be on top unless and until the competition changes their practices. Furthermore, unless MS, totally folds on the Xone, I don't see Scorpio being ahead at any point in the remaining life cycle, partially because they would have to gimp their games to remain in line with the Xone. Which would negate any real power advantage over the ps4 pro. But f they don't gimp said Scorpio games, and do start making exclusives, they will lose their existing install base from the Xone. It's a really bad situation. It's great to have this super powerful system (Scorpio), but if they truly utilize that power they would basically lose everything they've tried to build with the Xone. As well as a boat load of consumer trust and confidence. That's why Sony will remain on top this generation and on until MS changes its policies on games. Just my opinion.

Microsoft already doing the first move with Scorpio. Scorpio not like the PS4 Pro. Scorpio using brand new Ryzen architecture and 12GB memory. It is not a midgen upgrade but Microsoft lies to people again. You guys see SCORPIO only games. Maybe not on the release but in time. But you guys never gone see PS4 PRO only game because Pro not powerful enough to describe NEXT GEN console. It is midgen upgrade for 4K TV owners.

PS5 release will be depend on Scorpio succeed. If Scorpio sell really well PS5 will be around end of 2018. If it`s Scorpio not dominates sales and go decent market share PS5 not gone show up until end of the 2019 maybe Beginning 2020.
Everything about market share for company`s like Sony or Microsoft. I know them because i`m a console gamer since 1989. I saw them last 20 years strait when and why bringing next gen consoles to market. Beginning the 90`s they was looking for 3D graphics and better, realistic video games. After 2006 PS3 release they will start think not only technology and better games, they starts thinking MARKET SHARE and more console and game sale then ever because world economy wasn`t good.

Today same thing still happening. PS3 to PS4 we did not see NEXT GEN graphic leap much. Still playing remaster games and more like same PS3 era games with higher resolution and frames.
Those are my idea`s and thoughts guys by the way.
