Sony Is Already Selling PlayStation VR at a Profit

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shawn Layden, Sony is already making money off its new headset.

More money means more awesome exclusives for us :D The PlayStation Division should just rename itself Profit Division, they have PS4s, PSVR, various accessories and the PSN all making money. Oh and I forgot to say that this will make a lot of people very mad trololol

I'm just messing around. Yeah I'm surprised I went so long without any disagrees. However you would have to be a dick to disagree with me in this case. It's good news for any company to make a profit from their products.

Great news, I remember reading something years ago like the majority of console platform profits are normally made on software and accessories, so seeing PSVR make profit is great news and helps further develop the platform.

Or bad news. Making a profit on each one means it is cheaper to make than the price so you are getting a lower quality VR unit. If they lost on each one that would mean they were putting in better quality parts and making up the profit on software.

It is like PS4 pro. If they put in a UHD blu-ray disc drive but charged the same price that would mean they lost on each unit sold but you got a better featured console. They usually make up the loss on software sales.

Selling the hardware at a profit doesn't actually mean that they fully profited on the Endeavour of PlayStation VR because you're not calculating the marketing the research and development and clearly the games that they've had and development with the expectation that the install base will be high.

ie they technically could still lose money if they don't sell a specific amount of PlayStation VRs and as to why nobody ever factors in marketing research and development and actual game development is beyond me all those things still cost money.

For them to make a full 100% return they need to actually make all the money back that they spent on development , marketing and clearly all the games that they had planned need to make a profit.

Consider this if they spent several billion dollars developing it and it's sold only two units on a profit, did they make money or did they lose money? I think this should help anybody that's confused about the situation.

I have to admit, I've only played Rez on it but I am extremely happy with my purchase. In a sense I had that feeling you get when you're getting a new console and playing it for the first time even though...this ain't. If you're on the fence and leaning to the direction of interest I whole heartedly and highly recommend going for it. Yes it's a $100 more than the PS4 Pro (if you get the complete bundle) but it offers a legit novel experience you can't get anywhere else but from VR.

Man listen...I appreciate the psvr. It's getting great reviews and even the software is scoring very well for vr titles compared to what's been out there for Rift and Vive. But the one area the psvr needs improvement is definitely the input devices. The move controllers just aren't cutting it. I'm really hoping this http://wccftech.com/sony-fi... is something we get sooner rather than later. That would be awesome.

Yea I am one of those firm non-supporters of motion controls, but there are PSVR games that use a conventional controller.

hmm, was it revealed what was the R&D cost of the device? if let's say the R&D cost was 2 mil (which is probably really low) and they are profiting 10~20 $ over every headset then they sold already 100,000 ~ 200,000 units and if the R&D cost is higher (which it probably is) then they are probably having great sales.

I'm sure it was 100 times more R&D than that amount, but the profit from each unit probably only covers marketing costs etc. where the real money comes from is the additionally VR software and accessories. I'm guessing Sony is making a fortune off it altogether.
