Here is what The Last Of Us could look like in Unreal Engine 4

3D environment artist, Kimmo Kaunela, has been working this past whole year on a project inspired by Naughty Dogs’ The Last Of Us. Kimmo has managed to create an amazing map, showcasing what The Last Of Us could look like in Unreal Engine 4.

Lol what? Do you know how to make game environments. It´s not like taking screenshots and doing some Photoshop work on top of that. As far as I get this story is that there is just one dude behind this who made everything like models, textures and stuff. I agree TLoU is still looking awesome.

I think this is good fan art, but it really is meaningless in any other sense. This isn't what the game could look like in Unreal Engine, as this doesn't even look as good as Uncharted 4. It's just nice fan art.

Okay, Fair enough, That looks great. Remind you, I bet it would look better built from the ground up on PS4 than what you showed. For example, Take uncharted 4 and how GOW is looking. Uncharted 4 is by far one of the best looking games I have played, I was consistently taking shots in photo mode and stopping to adore the environments.

I think you've entirely missed the point of this. He's not trying to upstage Naughty Dog, nor is he trying to suggest that Unreal Engine 4 is better. This is an artist showcasing their ability to produce professional quality work with a common toolset.

More than that, it took teams of artists to produce what you see in TLOU. This took one man and UE4. That's seriously impressive, regardless of whether or not you think it had a point. And this has far more detail in terms of geometry and foliage than the PS3, let alone resolution. While a qualitative argument, I can quantitatively state that there's more going on here than the PS3 game.

It would probably look the same. The art assets and shader programs are the work of their in house artists, which would look almost exactly the same if ported to either engine. The engine is just a palette, it's all about the painter.

So different engines don't have their own their own sets of unique strengths or weaknesses? I'm not that tech savvy & you obviously have a point that an engine is only ever as good as the person utilizing it, but are there parts of an engine that give their respective software some unique traits & characteristics?

Either way this is a great effort for one guy but I've gotta agree that ND are on an entirely different level. Amazing to think that not only was TLOU created last gen w/ visuals that still hold up today, but that ND are using the same engine they've used since UC1 to create something as gorgeous as UC4. Really illustrates that devs should stop changing engines like underwear. The time that some devs take to create new engines every game could be better spent mastering their current one & focusing their time on the game itself. Remedy is a dev that could really benefit from keeping one static engine...I'd read that they created entirely new engines for both Alan Wake & Quantum Break, and that that took up a decent portion of dev time. Hoping more devs keep a solid foundation so they can start cranking out the games.

This looks great but let's be honest. The game couldnt have this much detail and still run smooth. Maybe with high end pc hardware sure, but we're talking about the ps4. The foliage alone would cause extreme slowdown.

But, as a standalone artwork, this is very awesome and quite impressive.

Edit: not to mention, they use their own proprietary game engine.

Great work, but I already saw what TLOU looks like in current ND engine after playing Uncharted 4. The last several levels gave me the TLOU feels.

I just hit chapter 15 last night, and that was my first thought exactly. All of the overgrown dilapidated buildings definitely give off that unique TLOU post apocalyptic vibe.

I've never seen a UE fan-remake that looks better than the original.
It's the engine for people with bad taste, it seems.
Maybe take a couple of art-direction classes?

I don't agree at all. I've seen lots of very nice looking UE4 remakes. The Bloodborne one, for example, definitely looked better than the same area in the original game. This one, too, looks somewhat better than the original.

Having played TLOU on PS4, I'd say that the PS4 version looks better than these screen shots. Not taking anything away from the fan art because they do look good.

I own it on PS4 and have beaten it and I think this level looks better. Especially in terms of foliage quality, textures and geometric complexity.
