That Time Way of the Warrior Divekicked Naughty Dog into Sony's Corner

Way of the Warrior is the reason that you know the name Naughty Dog. We live in a world shaped by the legacy of a cheesy Mortal Kombat knockoff.

Loved that game, White Zombie soundtrack was awesome.

_smashthegamestate_2944d ago

Agreed. It's like the Deadly Premonition of '90s fighting games.

NotanotherReboot2944d ago

I thought Naughty Dog wasn't for you m8

_smashthegamestate_2944d ago

Different cat. One of my comrades. We're all praying for him. ;)

_smashthegamestate_2944d ago

Downvotes? Deadly Premonition is a masterpiece! Fight me.

UltimateOne882944d ago

I had friends come over every night and we would play until 4 or 5AM - 5 nights a week for months!

The greatest memory I have of my 3DO! It was one of the first games (that I knew of) to use licensed soundtracks and introduced me to White Zombie! I hear that album today and I am instantly transformed back to 1994.

Great times!

_smashthegamestate_2944d ago

When I was a kid, I played it on the sales floor of a store called Incredible Universe. I remember afterwards having to explain to my dad that it was DEFINITELY Mortal Kombat. "I didn't see a sign anywhere for Mortal Kombat." "Dad... It's Mortal Kombat." I was a little punk.

ziggurcat2944d ago

oh, I am. some things should just never be remembered.

_smashthegamestate_2944d ago

Tell me the opening sequence with the talking skull isn't one of the finest moments in video games and I will explain, gently, why you are a liar.

gangsta_red2944d ago

The chink in Naughty Dog's armor.

This game was terrible. I remember this game way back when on the 3DO and wow the MK rip offs where abundant.

Not as bad ass Tattoo Assassins though...

Hmmmm...maybe ND should do a remake of this game!

_smashthegamestate_2944d ago

I disagree. I would say its ND's finest hour. They did what very few bankrupt third party devs have been able to pull off: They made a budget fighting game that turned a profit. And its sound design is ahead of its time.

gangsta_red2944d ago (Edited 2944d ago )

That is great and all but that doesn't mean the game play was actually good. The White Zombi sound track is a plus but the actual gameplay and the fatalities were horrible. I remember seeing a bunch of MK rip offs for that time and very few, if any (in fact none) were able to capture the magic of MK.

Anyone here play Kasumi Ninja? Now that is a game that needs an article!

_smashthegamestate_2944d ago

With you 100 percent on the reboot suggestion.

Thats something ! Got the reason back

OtterX0m ago

I'd like something more lighthearted up next. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed The Last of Us, but I sure do miss the Naughty Dog games that didn't leave me feeling like someone just kicked my dog into traffic.

The Status of Every PlayStation Franchise

Sony owns a fair few iconic franchises - many dating right back to the original PlayStation. But while we’re pretty familiar with the likes of ongoing series such as God of War, Horizon, and Gran Turismo, there are plenty of PlayStation franchises that haven’t seen the light of day in a long time. So in this video, we’re going to be taking a look at the status of PlayStation’s many IPs, and checking in on when we last heard from them.

A 20+ minute video? Just include the written list in the article.

Status in one word:

Underutilized.

The end.

anast20h ago

Which ones should they utilize more?

BehindTheRows19h ago

Indeed. We hear this “underutilized” talk as if every old franchise should have a comeback or reboot.

I_am_Batman17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

When new IPs start looking like Concord, you can't blame people for wanting another Resistance or Killzone instead.

anast17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

J&D and Resistance are good ones. As much as I love these, though, I'm not sure they would payoff without an enormous marketing push. Younger gamers today do not have taste and the older gamers that would appreciate these might not be enough. But yeah, I would day 1 Resistance.

Well that’s just the consequence of consistently producing new IPs isn’t it. Not all studios can be or want to be like polyphony digital who made gran turismo all the time.

Abear2118h ago

Here lies The Infamous Series; once a shining beacon of free flying, lighting bolt sniping, and wire riding amazing gameplay, it has been laid to rest and be forgotten for what seems like forever despite being loved by millions. Plot next to Wipeout across from NBA Jam.

Lightning7715h ago

Still baffling they cancelled Twisted Metal, Factions 2 and Spider-Man Multiverse LS game but thought Concord looked good enough.

Chocoburger14h ago

Ape Escape, Parappa / Lammy, Gravity Rush, good times. Always hoping for them to make a return, or at least similar type games, such as the newly-announced Astro Bot, but one game isn't enough. Bring back the joyfulness of the 90's era of gaming.
