I'm actually dumbfounded by this. I thought it would be reasonably successful but everything is pointing to an extremely good launch.

amiga-man2981d ago

I'm not surprised, VR is turning heads and PSVR is the most affordable way to enjoy it

OB1Biker2981d ago

'VR is turning heads' indeed :)
I think people know it might limited in stock at launch.

BEASELY2981d ago

Literally turning heads!

Emme2980d ago

Not if You start fresh, then its about 1000 bucks.

UltraNova2980d ago

Sony should do day 1 movie releases exclusive to PSVR Cinema mode!

Imagine being able to watch the next Sony films movie the same day it premiers at the cinema at the comfort of your own couch while looking at an Imax sized screen!

Hot damn!

My only question is what kind of picture quality should we expect while watching movies in Cinema Mode? What about the 24fps movies, will they be converted to 120hz? How would that affect viewing experience?

amiga-man2980d ago

Emme your argument is silly, the other options are far more expensive if you have to start fresh.

ChrisW2980d ago

Turning heads so fast, Dramamine wouldn't help!

As soon as the buy button popped up, i put it in the basket and was pre-ordered a minute later, cant bloody wait.

The price is the strong point here, i know alot off guys and gals who really wanted to get into VR, but were put off by the Rift/Hive high prices, i actually called this price in a some PSVR articles a few weeks ago.

TBH, all Sony had to do was undercut both on price and the interest would go up.

jamstorr862981d ago

You're right there. Only problem I can see is the comparison of tech specs between psvr and the Rift and Vive. Not sure PSVR will stand the test of time as people start asking for more graphical fidelity that the RIFT and Vive will offer on the PC.

badz1492981d ago

@jamstorr86

pc games have always been superior fidelity-wise compared to their console ports, but it didn't stop multiplats to sell better on consoles most of time than not.

comparisons are gonna come by no matter what but the specs of these things are already known. PSVR is inferior by default compared to Rift and Vive as Sony have spec-ed PSVR to work on the PS4, which most are deeming as mid-end PC equivalent. from previews and hand-on reports, it seems like PSVR delivers like what it should and this proves that Sony is doing things right! they even guaranteed PSVR to be 120Hz capable and want devs to make sure their games are 60fps MINIMUM! that is one hell of confidence if you ask me.

but in the end, it will all come down to games! all Sony have to do it make sure PSVR is supported enough with games especially exclusives and it will do just fine.

joeorc2981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

"The PSVR will operate at a constant 120hz refresh rate, a system level standard that is quite a bit higher than the 90hz offered by the Rift and Vive. This refresh rate is powering a 5.7″ OLED screen operating at 1920×1080."

http://techcrunch.com/2016/...
I think mainly among price & demo's shown off with people having 1st hand experience to try the headset out, has some consumer's seeing first hand why VR today is not like it used to be in the 90's VR today from Entry level mobile like Gear VR, Playstation VR for console and vive & OculusRift for PC to the AR/VR combo headsets. With all of these tech companies putting investment and resources into VR it shows not just by talking about the technology working. But people can try out the technology for themselves and really see why VR today really just works.

VR dies not have the weakness of not working with consumers that wear subscription eye wear. You can use VR HMD headsets and unlike 3D glasses, this gives you the ability yo still See 3D but with having to choose having to take your eye off. It still works with your eye wear on.

Top it off. Cinematic mode allows all PS4 games to be played on the HMD, yes they may not have full direction of being a native VR game, but with the ability to play those game's in such a mode, it serve as a home theater experience.

As pointed out above Playstation VR having such a high refresh rate constant means less straining of your eyes in VR not to mention keeping games in a more active stable frame rate because of it.

thejigisup2981d ago

The cinema mode is going to get some very serious use.

MasterCornholio2981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

I can't wait to game on my own private imax screen.

A movie theatre experience from the comfort of a sofa.

Amazing how Sony nails it.

jamstorr862981d ago

I would ignore the fact that it performs at 120hz. I recall from some interviews that palemer luckey that the difference betweem 90hz and 120hz is barely detectable by the human eye in most people.

Vhampir2981d ago

@jamstorr86
PSVR copies the previous frame and distorts it, the games still run at 60fps.

Omeganex99992981d ago

@jamstorr86

You are missing the point. It's not like the 60fps vs 30fps debate, it's about not getting motion sickness. You don't notice the game being more or less fluid, your body does and it feels much more natural. (according to those who tried all of them)

freshslicepizza2981d ago

i am sort of caught off guard too but you have to hand it to sony for waiting and getting both oculus and htc thrive to announce their prices first. this allowed sony to swoop in and undercut them by at least $200 which creates a greater value proposition even though $400 is still a lot of money for a console peripheral.

Tobsesan2981d ago

Classic Sony, they always do this move. Just never come out first and undercut.

yeahright22981d ago

@ Tob, well except with PS3...

Mr Pumblechook2980d ago

@Tobsesan Hardware pricing is not decided on a whim or in reaction to a competitor. Like Sony did with PS4 they would have planned for it to be as cheap as possible so they made sensible hardware compromises. They could have made a VR set with the same spec as HTC Vive but it would not have a mass market price. So Sony balance power with affordability. Pricing would have been decided way in advance of release.

MasterCornholio2981d ago

With over 40 million users and a huge part of them hardcore gamers I can't say that I'm surprised.

kayoss2981d ago

To kill the competitor, i think Sony should also make it compatible with PC's and Mac. Maybe later updates because we all know that PS4 are x86 (similimar to PC).

G20WLY2981d ago

Down the line maybe, once they've established an install base.

This would spell trouble for Rift and Vive - but I'm not sure that's Sony's aim or would be good for the industry as a whole, which, let's not forget, PS VR is a part of.

Omeganex99992981d ago

It would be awesome, to be honest. Just needing to output games at 1080/60 means that the minimum specs won't be as high as the competition, making it more affordable for everyone else.

The problem might be with the PS Camera, since it will need an adapter to be used with a PC (you can't use the PSVR without it).

miyamoto2981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

PC and Mac? maybe
But Mobile?
ZOMG I can feel Sony itching to pull the trigger on that segment of video gaming!

And they have positioned the PS VR price very nicely on the sweet spot there.

PS4 is really full of surprises!
Shoots down all the negativity right from the get go!

sourav932981d ago

"Based on our initial allocation we cannot guarantee release day delivery if you ordered after 11:45 GMT, Wednesday 16 March, 2016". Just checked my confirmation email. The order went through at 11.46 GMT. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!

DarXyde2981d ago

Very glad to see Sony enjoying early success in the VR space, but I am wondering how many units were available for pre-order. If the supply was limited to begin with, selling out may not be as grand as it's being made out to be.

I would imagine Sony is keeping a very controlled stock to avoid overages, gauging consumer interest and whatnot.

By all means, I hope my skepticism is met with my words handed to me on a platter. I genuinely want VR to succeed. I'm just skeptical of what selling out means here.

hells_supernova2981d ago

Sony themselves a few months ago projected 1.5 million first year. So I would agree that their launch stock is very limited.

In saying that really happy and hoping VR is successful and backed by developers.

It has also sold out here in NZ (at least the launch stock has) and on Mightyape.co.nz it is one of the most popular items overall right now.

DarXyde2981d ago

Promising signs, for sure.

I think they can do PSVR great justice with some kiosks. Well before launch too do people can start saving based on the experience.

jairusmonillas2981d ago

It works with every PS4 game (UNLIKE MOST EXTRA ACCESSORIES THAT ONLY WORKS WITH CERTAIN GAMES) so obviously it will be a success just for that reason alone.

Muzikguy2981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

What I find funny is how something can be sold out, when it's not even out yet. Yeah I understand preorders. Those can't "sell out" though, really.

I hope to see kiosks at places like GameStop and Best Buy. You know, like Microsoft had for Kinect. PSVR is already starting off well which is great

Gemmol2981d ago

everything sells great when it comes out, what system or handheld didnt start strong.......only time you know something fail is after 4 years, I would of said 3 years, but Nintendo did something amazing, DS launch good but went cold, but DS Lite came back with a vengeance, so 4 years is a good standard to tell if it fail or not

Apex132980d ago

Calm down mate. They hadn't even stated what the numbers are.

Insane, hope I can get one, the launch is gonna be ridiculous

Walker2981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

Fantastic . This is going to be another huge success for sony .

DigitalRaptor2981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

.
The news coming out of the VR space in the past few days has been doing nothing but spanking the doubters, the detractors and disingenuous haters. With every piece of news, hands-on preview and revelations like this.

According to these guys, PSVR is going to flop. According to these guys. PSVR "too expensive" and a deal breaker because it doesn't come bundled with a camera and Move? A camera that was also sold out at a point in time due to its popularity. PSVR is going to be a runaway success, leading to even better support from developers than we're already seeing.

Now I'm left wondering, where's Rookie_Monster & friend to spread the "concern"?

Hitoemi2981d ago

Early adopters will always snap up new tech. The 32x sold out on preorder as well. Th deciding factor will be whether mainstream will buy this, not whether early adopters preorder.

Rhythmattic2981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

Very true... Like Kinect Ver1

MS where yelling from the rooftops about the sales success of kinect, but we know how that turned out.

Quite simply, Its sony's ball to drop.... By the end of the year when its in peoples hands and there are titles available for it, thats when we will really get an idea on its success...

Im thinking Sony making it available towards the end of the year is a great move ,honing the experience , because theyre going to need the gamers, industry and media to have an experience offered no other way, and most importantly a excellent one.

whether that happens?

Personally, cant friggin wait.

stuna12981d ago

I think it coming out ahead of the holiday rush will cement PSVR success on the market! October and early November is when children are out with their parents scoping out what's new on store shelves and Video Game sections in the electronic isles are always packed.

Most parents don't pay extreme attention to age warnings, because if they did we wouldn't have as many kids screaming in our ears on games like GTAV.

G20WLY2981d ago

The Kinect was a success, in sales terms. It was just that it didn't work properly and the software was crap and in short supply.

The press and reviewers have learned from that experience and early indicators are that it functions as intended - something it has over Kinect from the off - and is comfortable and fn to use.

Couple that with the fact that there are over 230 developers working on PS VR, 100+ games announced, 25+ of which are exclusive to the platform and you can't help feel pretty sure this is not another Kinect, but could instead be an important milestone for gaming as a whole.

fallacious2981d ago

by that logic the early adopters are the mainstream

I can finally play Half Life Alyx.

mariopasta53d ago

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.

crazyCoconuts53d ago

be careful not to sprain your... tongue pronouncing those pronouns

Profchaos53d ago

I'm excited for that to plus I can try fallout 4 VR always wanted to play that

crazyCoconuts53d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

DaReapa53d ago

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.
