Here is the second entry in Pure PlayStation's 'A Brief History of'. This time they're looking into a brief history of Guerrilla Games.
The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.
Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!
I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.
Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.
resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword
Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2
Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.
There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.
Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence
The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!
The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer
The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.
Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱
I’m beating a dead horse here… but Resisitance FOM gun lay out was so fun, multiplayer was one of my top favorite experiences. Insomniac nailed it and I would love a remaster and maybe a redo with Reisistance 2. They listens to players who were wanting a Halo killer and it kind of lost its character from the first.
Warhawk, if they had just remade the first one not Starhawk which offered nice things like the build and battle.. but Warhawk was the best arcade shooter I ever played. Back when you didn’t have battle passes and you actually had to get certain amount of kills or ribbons to unlock different paint skins on the Warhawks and armor for your player.. Look at the success of Helldivers 2, it’s a fun game and it reminds me of Warhawk in a way. I’ve been wanting a remake or sequel since the beginning of the ps4 gen.. it’s hurts to have hope nowadays. Even with the demise of the studios Sony has a steady fan base.
Killzone game after Killzone 2 play style would be nice
Motorstorm would be epic with the visual upgrade, maybe this game would be a harder sell with the genre being not as popular nowadays..
Resistance franchise, Motorstorm and Dirt 2 which was fun as heck. Add Dead Space 2 as well.
I quickly looked and only saw the words PS5 Remaster and a picture of Fall of Mans logo
Ahhhh shit, well maybe one day
Resistance 1-3 remastered with online
Kill zone 1-3 remastered with online
God of war PS3 games and PSP games collection
Infamous 1-2 with all dlc please we need this. It’s such an underrated franchise and so much potential. In this age of super hero media craze Sony should utilize infamous
White knight chronicles 1-2
Warhawk and starhawk
Motorstorm series
MGS4
Easy money would be to remake Resistance and Killzone series, rather than just a remaster. And PS5 desperately needs some couch co-op shooters so this would scratch that itch.
Yeah definitely iam playing on xbox now hasn't aged well but I'd loved syphon filter I can't remember if was om ps3 but I'd love a remake on my ps5
PS3 ended up been a beast of a console, slow out of the gate, picked up steam, smashed through the finish line. The 1st PS3 slim is still one of my favourite consoles. So solid, great games, by the time GTA5 and the last of us had come out it was a clear winner for me
"PS3 may not have been the strongest generation"
Meanwhile...just looking at exclusives alone and not even third party titles
Uncharted was born
Demon's Souls was born
Metal Gear Solid 4
God of War 3
The Last of Us was born
Little Big Planet was born
Warhawk
Killzone 2 and 3
Infamous was born
Resistance was born
Motorstorm was born
Gran Turismo
Heavy Rain
Journey
Shadow of the Colossus returned paving the way for the remake in the PS4 generation
PS Plus was born
Sorry bud, but the PS3 generation was amazing and featured the greatest console comeback in history.
That said, I'd love it if Warhawk returned or Metal Gear Solid 4. It needs to not be shackled to the PS3 generation anymore. A Killzone 2 remake would be insane with modern graphics and that art direction.
I really miss this gen of gaming. It felt like the last truly "great" era for videogames before the modern approach really took hold.
The PS3 was such a glorious console. The UI, the games, the free online...just incredible.
I would pay good money for a Warhawk remake. Socom too. The last Socom game just didn’t do it justice. Folklore could use a remaster or remake as well.
Several other titles I would like to remade with the amount of visual fidelity the current gen has over the past consoles it could help articulate the games that we’ve loved growing up. I would love even some ps2 titles to remade.. Dark Cloud from ps2, Legacy of Kain series but don’t know what will come of it sense it was bought by Embracer group and all there layoffs.
This strategy is exactly what helped ruin Xbox. Sony more than Microsoft know when to let a franchise go and that is important to keep things fresh. The old games are there if you want to play them.
Resistance series and Killzone 2 & 3 remasters/remakes. Make it happen. They will print money.
FF13 is top of this list for me. No matter your opinion on it, it being the only numbered offline FF out of all 16 not to be on new consoles is odd. GTA IV would be great too
The only reason my PS3 is still connected is because of the Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm games that I still love to play. I am for remaking or remastering them.
I had motorstorm 1&2 and apocalypse, which was also in 3d if you had a 3d telly, which were just kicking off, at the time my auntie gave me a Sony 40”3d, not top of the range or anything, but stilll, I felt like da’ total shizz playing that with the world falling apart around me
Good times
Resistance 1-3 and Killzone 1-3 too. Folklore and 3 Dot Heroes are underrated gems.
Why remaster games that ps5 players can't access when you can remaster a 4 year old game like tlou2 that was already patched with ps5 improvements
Infamous 1&2 will sadly always be ignored by Sony, not even a ps4 remaster the whole gen, smh but uncharted, horizon, even days gone had next gen upgrades sheesh 🤦🏽 mane even tho Sony is still doing pretty good in the console business they are a lil big headed lol, I never played the resistance series but it would of been dope to see those games updated as well, we fans get lil surprises here n there but things we really are into having and being vocal about gets passed over like a mf 🤣😩
Im a fan of PS3 but the downside of cell is getting games programmed for it off the PS3 onto future PS consoles.
God I would live a Killzone or Resistance collection. Really hoping for a new one in either franchise down the line, loved both series.
The first Killzone game never met lofty expectations of dethroning Xbox’s Halo, but if any game needs a PS5 remake, this is the one.
I like Halo, but I don't think there is any need for a 'Halo Killer' at this point. If anything, the franchise is slowly undermining itself by making some of the dumbest mistakes possible. Infinite has finally reached a good point in terms of multiplayer, but it took an extra 2 years to get there. Meanwhile, the single-player experience is fine but rather mediocre when compared to the franchise peak.
That said, I would like to see the Killzone franchise back, if anything, to offer more variety to the PS5 exclusive catalog.
sony should remaster all killzone games and bring back killzone multiplayer that is very similar to the style of killzone 2 multiplayer.
Halo killed itself after Halo Reach.
Killzone went a little down in quality with SF on PS4 and I wish they kept them coming..
I'd love a killzone trilogy, fully remastered on a single disc like they did with Uncharted. Maybe they could make it the full killzone saga including PSP and Vita games converted to console.
Yes please. Put me down for a copy, price irrelevant too. Loved allow those games in the franchise :)
I've never liked the idea of a 'franchise killer', why can't both thrive, without one killing off the other? Its such a childish mentality.
That being said, if there ever was a true 'Halo killer', then it would have to be 343 Studios, and the Xbox division. They're doing a fine job killing off their own IP, apparently.
@eonjay
Yeah and I still cringe super hard when IGN runs their next gen console watch segment 3 years into the consoles lifecycle we are approaching midgen likely by December and they are out there milking clicks like it's mid 2020 and were starved for information
Halo doesn't need to be killed, they've done that themselves. It's a shell of its former self.
And yet Halo is still here. Where is Killzone? Resistance? Haze? All the supposed "Halo Killers" are dead franchises 😂
"Dead" really isn't the right word for any of these franchises (except Haze). You're also calling these games dead for different reasons. oIMyersIo is saying a Halo is dead because it is not what it used to be and is saying it has gotten much worse. You are saying those franchises faded into obscurity and no one cares. I also find it funny that your first reaction is to name PlayStation franchises because you perceived their comment as a slight against Xbox. I hope you're at the very least part of their ambassador program...
Anyone that sees Killzone as dead is pretty myopic. A decade since their last Killzone, but they themselves have developed two full games since Shadow Fall. That's not many in context at all.
Resistance is a bit less clear. Insomniac is pretty tied up at the moment. Including all of their games on all platforms and ignoring Spider-Man Remastered, we're looking at 23 games since Resistance 3. That's alarmingly prolific and still no R4. My guess? In the modern era, a new Resistance is probably going to have to be a live service and Insomniac is not that studio.
I don't think it's dead though. Not at all.
Halo infinite is still the best exclusive fps and is doing great but you think it's dead lol. Its also one of the top fps games out here so i dont get where your coming from. Just because you don't play it does not mean it's dead or dying.
I liked killzone 1 & 2 and I think Sony should bring it back along with resistance cause they are in need of more variety in their first party lineup. Sony & MS are sitting on some great franchises that need a revival.
"Just because you don't play it"
And there your argument was derailed.
Through making such an assumption, you have only served to show that your response is that of a fanboy and any criticism of your beloved franchises is met with speculation in order to downplay any counter argument.
As a matter of fact, as many in team blue on this site will tell you, I often do defend Xbox just as much as I defend PS, so for you to make such a silly comment is laughable.
I have played plenty of Halo: Infinite - on Series S, Series X and PC via Steam. To say the game comes anywhere near the franchise greats such as Combat Evolved and Halo 2 is delusional. The franchise is a shell of its former self and that is a FACT.
It absolutely isn't the best fps exclusive but at this point we're arguing over preferences which is pointlessly subjective.
Where I do agree is that a Resistance comeback would be great for Sony.
That was the weirdest claim during that time. It reminded me of people claiming that The Order 1886 was a Gears of War Clone, which just goes to show you how delusional some gamers can be.
Guess things haven't changed much. But I am so ready for a Killzone, such a great franchise.
I guess I forgot the /s
Killzone was never around to be a Halo killer. It was 2 completely different games, while the marketing for Haze was to become the new Halo with co-op etc.
It depends on who you ask. It was definitely a halo killer for me. I would never pick halo over kz, especially the multiplayer. To me, the multiplayer was miles ahead of halo.
No need for them to kill Halo. Microsoft did that themselves 🤣
But like others have said, no need for a Halo killer. Just make a great shooter.
halo was massive, but ran on quake 3 physics engine for years (until halo reach I believe) IT WAS ALWAYS RUNNING ON A MODIFIED QUAKE 3 BASE ENGINE, so while 10 years ago that felt great, and was top notch, its now outdated and old-hat somewhat, time to move on.. for example the weightiness in modernwarefare 2019 blew it away, the lighting also, totally different games, but the point still applies,. stop rehashing, make something new, the nostalgia went away a long time ago,, unless they released something exceptionally special with infinite, I was prepared to go back, but they didn't, so its over now, let it r.i.p.
I wish they'd bring over these old PS3 games to current gen and PC. I crave Infamous, and to try Resistance and Killzone. And honestly speaking I think anything at this point can become a Halo killer since the series hasn't been the sa!e since Bungies departure.
I love that PlayStation's most recent acknowledgement of the series in many, many years is a t-shirt in The Last of Us Part 2 Remaster. Sad times
Why does it need to be a Halo killer? Why can't it just be it's own thing? Are we 5 years old or something?
No need to kill anything. Just come back. Gotta be one of the most requested IP that Sony is quietly sitting on.
Halo became a halo killer.
Seriously though that term was from a time when halo was on top of the world it was the must have shooter the golden eye of the 6th gen.
Then cod came along and we all fell in love with military shooters and that became the number 1 shooter.
Killzone wanted a shot at halo back in the day because there was nothing like it but they never figured out the special sauce I loved kz 2 and shadow fall but I know I'm in a minority there.
I want kz to come back and I really want it as a VR game to boot but I don't want it to be Halo
A remake? No thanks. Give the series a soft reboot with a story arc across multiple games.
Probably not a popular take. But I think Sony would put out a Killzone Online, a f2p with season pass. With season 1 you would get K1 remastered. And then season 2 with K2 remastered and so on. KZ online would be would be the MP component and have 3 kinds of game modes. One small scale team death match, like 12 Vs 12. One large scale BF kinda game mode with vehicle, 64 Vs 64. And one Battle royal teams, you drop in as a team of 4 out of 100 players and do the BR thing
I never liked Halo much because the controls and movement felt so floaty. I never much liked Killzone because the controls and movement felt so heavy. Loved the graphics and environments though.
Huh? Wtf you talking about theloadout? KZ1 was never a Halo killer and it was never even aiming in that direction. Let me guess, it was before your time and you are just pulling history out your butt again.
I would LOVE a KZ 1-3 remake. I don't care if it's on the PS6. That would only mean the graphics would be light years ahead of the original
That stupid tag line shows up again. I think it was OPM came up with that trash
Why bother? Phil killed halo, so halo is already dead without sony putting any effort.
Just remake killzone 2 with the same atmosphere and improvements and it’s game over.
But why? Just reboot it or make a new IP. What about a new entry in the same universe. Stay confused at the people who want to play games they already experienced.
With the details we now have in terms of features and pricing, I don't think there are any significant concerns remaining - just that perhaps that the term 'remastered' in the title is a little misplaced. Essentially, what we're dealing with here is broadly equivalent to a release along the lines of Death Stranding: Director's Cut. It's the original game with a dash of extra content and additional visual modes that tap into the power of PlayStation 5.
Bloodborne, Infamous, Killzone, Resistance, Puppeteer, Jak and Daxter etc are all better choices
Even a full on remake of Drakes Fortune I’d take
killzone 2/3 definitely a better choice, i have recently finished the games on pc and thought about that, a full remake like demon souls is even better
2&3 are still fine... I'd take the first one as a full remake before the others. They could flesh out more of the backstory that the sequels touch on. Even go deeper into the lore of Helgan.
KZ 2/3 would be amazing. KZ 2 was a graphical masterpiece back then. With today's modern tech, all of those tricks Guerilla Games did to create the effects like the lighting, storm effects, etc, they could now be done in real-time and more realistic
Uncharted 1 still got a decent remaster for 8th gen ... a remake is not that much of a requirement ...
instead remake candidates should be from 5th or 6th gen
and as for proper remasters (not just lazy res upscale): Killzone 2 & 3 obviously and also Resistance/inFamous (as well as MGS4 :P)
My point with the list is that I’d rather see those titles than what we are getting…titles which are only 3-5 years old and still hold up today
Sony own the Demons Souls and Bloodborne IP, I wish they'd do something with Bloodborne at the very least.
The way you worded that makes me think you don't realize they already remade demon souls
Not one of those will sell more copies than TLOU2 Remaster. The sooner we realize that these gaming sites and their followers are less than 1% of the buying public the better off we’ll be.
Sure we prefer newer titles but this is business and a business is what Sony is running.
Don't you think they could be doing something better with their time and money, like maybe making something new? Or have they become lazy and just reliving the past with the same old games over and over.
Gez ... do something fresh and new already .
I'd rather for them to go Square Enix route and remake/remaster their PS1 libraries instead of these unnecessary remaster
come on, legend of dragoon..
What's with the "need" anyway ? This is video games, no one needs them at all, we need water , we need air, we don't need games.
I would love a remake/remaster of KZ1. For its time it really pushed the PS2 hard and because of that it had a few issues. This is begging to be given the Bluepoint touch and brought up to date. I'd love to see an updated Killzone trilogy collection for sure.
Sony killed the game and the studio behind it, but a Remaster of the excellent Driveclub would absolutely be my favorite release if it happened. Just a delicious racing game.
So many better choices, I can't fathom why reasonably recent games are getting picked over Classics that are more deserving.
Well I want a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster especially if it's an upgrade to Forbidden West Graphics and Animation.
Nope. But HD remasters are an easy cash grab that the masses shovel cash for because while they complain about remakes, they still buy them
My thoughts on this is do we need Richard Leadbetter's or Digital Foundry's opinion on anything........ever? I know I don't they do nothing for me and never have.
You may not, but tons of people do since the video has 4,700 Likes to 112 Dislikes
That guy is a buffoon, DF Direct is the best gaming podcast around. I look forward to it every week.
DF videos are typically absolutely amazing game reviews first and foremost. They have great intros, explain the mechanics well, tell you if they enjoyed it or not (I usually vibe well with John's games personally), and then they have the best tech breakdowns of a game's performance which is very very important to me. I want to know what settings to run at on PC, and on PS5 I wanna know if the 60fps mode runs well or not because if it doesn't... well I'll just get it on PC (If it isn't completely broken there too). DF Retro is also always unbelievably interesting and super well edited and inspired my YouTube channel which just crossed 1200 subs (wooo!). They helped me a lot with understanding game development and got me interested in goofing around with game engines and PC building in general back in the day.
I don't mean any offence by this but you sound like somebody who skims their analysis videos, selectively scrolls to the stats, says "who cares?", and then closes it. Or possibly somebody who watches (stolen) cut clips on TikTok? Even if you are somehow unaffected by blurry images and fluctuating frame rates (some people are and I envy you) I recommend watching a full DF episode one day. They're extremely interesting and I watch literally all of them even if I have no interest in the game.
"I personally don't enjoy this extremely well-presented and highly informative content so it shouldn't exist."

Wouldn't it make more sense to release TLoU 2 only on PC, because it never had it in the first place just part 1.
Resistance needs an HD remaster such a great franchise, so does Infamous, Killzone, I would also love the Wild Arms games. And I wish Namco would get off their asses and HD remaster Enslaved, the Xenosaga Trilogy and the Dynasty Warriors Gundam games.
As long as it doesn't detract from other projects it doesn't me. Both those games are still great looking so it seems a bit odd. I understand TLOU2 a bit more I guess as it released a few months before a new gen. Just like TLOU1 did and that got a new version for the PS4
Do we NEED them? Of course not! However, business-wise, The Last of Us TV show was a huge success, this is why Part 1 got remade, and why Part 2 is getting a remaster, its the smart business choice to make. Even if it makes other people unhappy, which I can understand.
At least Part 2 remaster is adding new gaming content, whereas Part 1 remake didn't add anything new to the gameplay, and instead lost its multi-player mode. If you don't like these remakes and remasters, vote with your wallet.
I think this is the point everyone ignores.
Given the HUGE success of the TV show which potentially introduced a new audience to TLOU universe, it makes absolute sense to be able to say you can get these amazing games on PS5.
No needing to explain they are PS4 games which you can also play on PS5. Instead, they are available on PS5. It's such an obvious move to make from Sony with the anticipation of the next season of the show ramping up over the next year.
If the easy extra revenue is keeping people employed and combating crunch culture, then it's fine. I have no idea if that's the actual outcome though.
If (Sony) make it, they (PS5 owner) will come. So, yes Sony "needs" to make as many remaster as possible to maximize their profit (since there is no big 1st party exclusive confirmed for 2024).
How about Sony makes new exclusives to maximize profit.
That way they don't need to do these pointless remasters.
They should remaster and port Killzone series since it is not on the modern platform, not games that already are.
I feel that they’re more like ports to better hardware. Not really remasters. Essentially to be a remaster I feel that the experience has to really be a big improvement.
No. But people keep buying them so I have no impact on the choice of Sony.
I'd rather see a new Killzone with clan support or a remake of Resistance as a horror game but Sony turns a deaf ear to anyone with a brain.
I may as well just skip gaming for the next decade. This gen has been a disaster IMO. There was good third party and indie, but first party on PS and XBOX were just lacking.
Horizon definitely I had from ps4 Pro version looks rough now so coat paint would be nice
Meanwhile the infamous series like damn Sony really? Lol Sony ignores the infamous series alot mane
A full remake of the trilogy of resistance would be dope ! Or The 3 socoms or the 3 kill zone. Playstation have too much IP's for that .A blood borne remake could be a better choice than the last of us:part 2 remaster.
A remake of the 3 infamous or the the 3 first jak and daxter, there's so much raw diamonds in the playstation mine to exploit. I don't understand why sony not exploit all those ip's the way it should.
We gamers it's all we want and all we ever waiting for, awake the old ip's sony !
No we don't so what?! It's just video games. Don't like , don't buy. It's that simple. I like so i'll buy. Simple!
lmao NO we do not. TLOU2 is still one of the most graphically impressive games out right now, remastering it is a massive waste of time. Horizon Zero Dawn also holds up extremely well visually.
They should do SOCOM. I don't play many shooters but I'd play the fuck out of that one again.
I’m cool with what they’re doing with TLoO2, but I really don’t wanna play through a game the size of the first Horizon again. Feel like that time could be much better spent elsewhere. Bloodborne at 4k/60 for a start.
Seems absurd all these new games are getting remaster within a few years but we've had nothing with games like Bloodborne, which could massively benefit from more advanced hardware, particularly the frame rate and pacing.
Remasters on the whole feel like one of the biggest conjobs in gaming and I would rather not see them at all from any publisher, especially for games that are only a few years old and are easily playable/accessible.
And for the older games people are listing off - no matter how good they WERE, just be careful what you wish for because nostalgia is powerful and simple remasters may not do them justice. Gaming has moved on a LOT over the last 25 years (quality of writing, QoL changes, control schemes etc.) and its not until you go back to play them now that you realise it.
I'd rather see devs commit to fully remaking games or move on and make something new entirely.
I think ND is working on a secret new IP project. They only release remasters to stay relevant.
Uhhh. this was not a name all the games you can under a minute question, the question was posed "do we need remasters". Case in point is both of the titles used in the question run on current hardware.
One of my favourite Sony 1st party developers. I really hope they get round to a remastered Killzone 2 for PS4 one day - multiplayer included.
Horizon is the most promising looking new IP this gen, alongside Ancel's WILD
Yes please KZ2 REMASTERED!
Killzone 2 was one of my favorite multiplayer shooters ever
I see a lot of kz fans in here lol kilzone two was alright, three was the best one then the vita was second best. If anything id love to see anither kz on the vita. Kz shadow fall was garbage lol
Anyone know what Cambridge are working on? VR?
