Just because it isn't a tradition athletic sport doesn't mean it doesn't have a competitive aspect to it that many find entertaining.

I'm a fan of esports and I don't consider them athletes. Same goes for the examples I listed above. If people are too stupid to distinguish a physical sport from on that isn't, I have lost all faith in society. There is a reason they put the letter E in front of the word sport. It's to differentiate it from a traditional sport. But I guess people feel threatened with things they don't understand.

Why are people so upset about the semantics of what it should be called? It is a game that is played competitively just like any other sport the only difference is the athletic characteristics.

I don't think any pro gamer is calling themselves athletes and they put in as much time and effort(not physical) into their chosen game. Yes moving a joystick or mouse is the only physical aspect of esport but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot a strategy and depth to these games.

The only reason they wanted to be considered athletes by the US government is to expedite the visa process to make it easier to travel to competitions. But I guess you believe anything the government says.
