Story-wise I'd say: 3 > 1 > 4 > 2 > 5

5 could've ranked much higher if the last chapter wouldn't have been cut out, such a shame :/

But damn the gameplay and A.I in MGS 5 is staggering...in fact could you say MGS 5 has the best open-world gameplay of all time? Arkham City fans might may disagree I think it does !

Graphics are great no doubt but MGS3, Peace Walker and MGS4 were also epic in their time and still look great by today's standards.

While MGS5 is a good game, is not a full Metal Gear Solid game as we are used to play and is not the best in the series. MGS5 is more about managing resources and your base while doing some little operations in the field.

This is not definitely the metal gear gamegame I am used to play and love.

I have to agree to some extent. I don't like to say this or that MG game is the best in the series because simply I can't really choose. I think each and evert entry since the beginning offered something new and special to the series and that Kojima always managed to give us a brand new experience rather than a rehash of the previous entry. Exception is PW>TPP since you can easily tell it V was a PW2 however, the fact it was on a console this time made a huge difference. So yea, in terms of gameplay, V takes the edge easily. Those who prefer the linear MG games would probably go with MGS2 or MGS3. They're all amazing but unfortunately, I don't see myself going back after experiencing the smooth 60fps experience with V and the immersive controls.

Everyone got different opinions, but it's a difficult decision imo as they are all amazing in ways. For me MGS3 perhaps still stands as the best. I was really hoping this to surpass it in story. It just hurts, that we didn't see it as complete as Kojima envisioned.

MGSV does have the best gameplay and graphics, but I value the story, character developing and amount of voice acting etc from previous MGS games a lot. I think MGS3 does this the best for me. Although I have defended Kiefer for long time, I do miss David's more talking Snake, I wished they had used Kiefer more at least.

But, I wonder how it feels to go back and play older MGS games after experiencing MGSV gameplay.

Not even close MGS3 was imo the best in the franchise. Everything from the enviroments, animals, camouflage, the way to heal yourself, all the easter eggs, and the boss battles. To this day The End boss battle is my favorite boss fight in any game. Also i really enjoyed the mini game they added in MGS3. The one when you are in the cell after being tortured. You had to save the game while in the cell waiting and turn off the game when you came back Snake would dreaming, the mini game was pretty badass.

The more I play of it the better it gets. Phantom pain is moving up on the list. I don't know if it can catch mgs 1 or 2. But its damn good.

MGS3 is a far superior game followed by MGS1, and 4. MGS2 and 5 are my least favorite.
