With Platinum Games’ Scalebound, Microsoft is trying to broaden the Xbox One’s audience

What’s most interesting about Scalebound is the fact that the game is an Xbox One exclusive, especially given Kamiya’s popularity in Japan. Xbox One sales are practically a rounding-error in the region, and at one point was rumoured to only have sold 100 units in the country over the course of a few days.

Game is gorgeous. I want to see more and more gameplay. I'll probably pre order this game

Magicite3160d ago

It will be X1's first game that got me intrigued, mainly because I love both Platinum Games and RPG genre.

Fro_xoxo3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

Scalebound is jus' the beginn!ng.

christocolus3160d ago

I'm glad MS is working on new IPs. I can't wait to play SB ,Recore and Sea of thieves. They all seem like very unique titles. There's a rumor that MS is working on a western rpg type game. Will really love something similar to Jade empire, kotor or even witcher.

Fro_xoxo3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

Yeah, one of the new ips is bound to be a hit. . no pun ^_^. .

They're all looking really good too it's scary.

I just want MS to remain consistent with the ouput..

With Phil in charge there isn't much to worry 'bout.

Kingdomcome2473160d ago

Don't forget Quantum Break!

Magicite3160d ago

I hardly doubt there will be many exclusive RPGS on X1, its not that kind of audience.

freshslicepizza3159d ago

then change the formula, buy games like this. it always struck me as odd the same people who complain about the lack of games they are interested in ignore the ones that are available.

littlezizu3160d ago

One JRPG is not gonna make people jump on it. Besides PS4 has better JRPG coming for it like DQ XI, Star Ocean 5, DQ heroes 1 & 2, Persona 5, Disgea series, Tales series, and Many more. All these are exclusives or console exclusives. Most are bigger hitters moving tons of console on their own.

Thatguy-3103160d ago

While I agree with you statement the title says they are TRYING which is noticeable. However games like these don't sell great on Xbox. Xbox garnered the dude bro demographic. That's why the only thing that sells there are sport games and FPS. I'm curious to see how all these titles that MS is coming out with will do

Bigpappy3160d ago

"dude bro demographic". Oh yeah, u r right. Dude bro games like the withcher 2 and 3, the Elder scrolls series, Fallout series, KOTOR, Never Winter, ESOnline are all those Dudebros play.

3rd party shooters (COD) sell just as well on PS as they do on Xbox. You guys need to check yourselves and stop pointing fingers. Halo just happens to be the best FPS series of all time. So of course Xbox owners are going to play that. If you guys had it, you would do the same thing.

kaizokuspy3159d ago

@BigPappy he's right. Dude bros use "u r" instead of you're or you are and they tend to post subjective statements like halo is the best fps series of all time which is subjective at best. It's gone downhill since 343 took over. Glad you still enjoy it, but what dboyc310 is true. X360 was mostly shooters and sports games. Still is. Scale bound is a step in the right direction, but if more games like it don't come, there's no reason to buy a one. Make the argument that xbox has a great holiday lineup all you want too, but guess what, January comes after December and then your lineup is trash again, bc you won't have one.

Fro_xoxo3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

This isn't 'bout PS4 or who has better JRPGs. Stating a Japanese console has more/better JRPGs. .Genius /s

It's about Microsoft ->Trying<- to broaden the audience on XO with a variety of games. . This article just happens to use Scalebound.

@dboyc310
"That's why the only thing that sells there are sports games and FPS"

That isn't true. Pure JRPGs like the ones littlezizu mentioned don't sell amazingly well (in the west) either, they're niche titles no matter what platform they appear on, but it's nice to have them still, right?

christocolus3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

I was surprised to see him bringing PS4 into this too. Insecurity makes people do some really weird stuff. The article says MS is trying to expand its audience and littlezuzu immediately turns it to a console list war. Should MS stop investing in new ips cos PS4 has DQ and Star ocean? Smh. Also someone tell @dboyc to stop spewing the same BS over and over again. Don't worry about MS exclusives. There are a lot more genres besides shooters, sports and jrpgs. We have Adventure games, racing, simulation, mmorpgs, western rpgs, strategy, fighting games, Mobas, etc and xbox gamers enjoy those games too. Infact many games in these genres have had success on xbox platforms. Even titles like Ori, Never winter and smite have been successful on xbox one but yet we keep seeing these same comments. COD and BF now sell more on PS4 worldwide, same with. Most Sports titles does this make PS demographic the new dude bro? Smh

DigitalRaptor3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

I see what you guys are saying, and you're not wrong.

However, it becomes a bit of an issue when you realise that the same people hyping up a Japanese action RPG on XB1, are the same ones that utterly downplay and mock the Japanese RPG games like Persona 5, Nier 2, or Star Ocean V on PS4 as being irrelevant or lame etc. Of course that doesn't apply to everyone, but just thought I'd bring that up because it is just as valid a point as any.

But honestly... good for MS on this one whichever way the partnership went down. I hope it's a commercial success for Platinum. They haven't been the best at choosing the most ideal platforms for their games in recent years. Bayonetta 2 deserved WAY better.

Bigpappy3159d ago

The only thing that makes this game a JRPG, is that it is made in Japan. This is NOT your typical JRPG.

Having said that, I go way back to the early NES, Saga and Turbo-GX days. Played many turned based JRPG's. Moved on from them and it is hard to return. Don't mind them being made and coming to Xbox, just not for me.

Why o why3159d ago (Edited 3159d ago )

True...100 percent Raptor.... Double standards are rife but like you said, its a step in the right direction. Ms does sit on a couple old ips. They still have dormant games their fans probably yearn for. Otogi, crimson skies, kameo....im sure theres more.... all non dudebro genres that xbox fans used to enjoy. For me, consistency of variety was always a bugbear in regards to the xbox library. Broadening the variety is a good thing. They wont sell as much as some genres but it does show more risks are being taken.

gangsta_red3159d ago

Who are these same people Digital? You thought to bring it up to only start some stupid console fanboy nonsense.

Not everyone is into JRPG's and I'm sure those same people would extend that preference to this game also.

But I have to say that Scalebound as it looks right now is a very different type of game than a Persona 5, Disgaea or even Star Ocean. Platinum has even said themselves that they are aiming for a wider audience for this game which really means "western" appeal, unlike Star Ocean, Persona or Disgaea which truly carters to a Japanese market.

Rookie_Monster3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

This is not a traditional turn-based Jap RPG and has a western style influence just like MGSV is made by a Jap company but is gear more towards a Western audience.

Don't know why people are comparing this to Dragon Quest, Star Ocean or Persona and try to say that Xbox fans that didn't like "jRPG" all of a sudden like Jap RPG pertaining to the game and its platform as this is not even the same thing or even a same genre as Japanese turn-based RPG.

Anyways, it is nice MS have a wide range of variety and Scalebound and Recore and Sea of Thieves are perfect examples of that.

Sora_19943160d ago

But you gotta admit its pretty ironic as much as alot of ppl on here try to downplay rpgs to now be all hype for one because its on a different platform is silly

Rookie_Monster3159d ago (Edited 3159d ago )

Sora,

DON'T get your analogy. I see no one is downplaying games like Dragon Age Inquisition, Witcher 3, or Fallout 4 and all those are successful franchises on Xbox platforms. These are also RPGs, right? Actually Scalebound have more in common with these western action RPGs than a game like Dragon Quest or Persona. So I don't get where the confusion is?

When you think about it, The MMRPG, the elder Scroll online, which closely have play mechanics closer to Scalebound than Final Fantasy...it actually sold pretty good on Xbox One as it was the 6th best selling game in July NPD and the XB1 version was actually the best selling Sku.

NPD July
6) The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

So the myth about RPG don't sell on XB1 or people don't care about it on that platform..is just a myth.

Magicite3160d ago

Totally agree with You and thats the reason I always choose Playstation alongside my PC.

StrayaKNT3160d ago

Scalebound honestly looks better than all
Of them put together imo. Plus don't you guys prefer new ip? Lol

kaizokuspy3159d ago

From what I've seen scale bound does look amazing. Is it just me though or does the main character come off like a douche?

Magicite3159d ago

In JRPG department Playstation have always been a clear and true winner.

FallenAngel19843160d ago

It's not going to be very commercially successful though. We've already seen various times in the past how poorly Platinum Games and JRPGs sell on Xbox platforms. Scalebound has the misfortune of being both.

StrayaKNT3160d ago

Doesn't change the fact that xbox owners will have amazing exclusive titles to play.

Sales don't make a game better in any way and we have seen that.

kaizokuspy3159d ago

Sales matter. If the game doesn't perform saleswise, then there will not be another.

FallenAngel19843159d ago

Sales ensure that there are further installments in the IP so we have better games in the franchise. So sales do in fact matter

ScorpiusX3160d ago

Sweet
Look forward to playing and owning this game & welcome all new IPS

kaizokuspy3159d ago

That's the best attitude I've ever seen on n4g. Buy them all!

Forget about Scalebound and Bayonetta 3, Platinum should be working on a Vanquish sequel

Why this criminally underrated shooter should share the spotlight with Platinum’s finest.

ZeekQuattro804d ago

They should be working to getting games out on a timely matter not adding more games to the pile. I used to be a big fan of Platinum but their game turn out rate is atrocious these days. The games I want are no where to be seen and what is releasing is retro looking games no one asked for. I'm all for retro style games but not at the cost of bigger games sitting on the back burner for years at a time.

MIDGETonSTILTS17803d ago

Obvs…. Vanquish is da bomb 🤙

Scalebound Deserves A Second Chance

PlatinumGames wants to bring Scalebound back, and Microsoft should listen.

“Excitement” and “interest” in Scalebound seemed to only occur after it was canceled… However, IO interactive is rumoured to be developing a game involving Dragons for Xbox Studios. So maybe IO Interactive’s title could be branded as Scalebound.

Bathyj803d ago

I agree. The game looked terrible. People only got upset because it's cancellation was a dig at Microsoft but I was with them on this one. Better to cancel a game then release a bad one. Then again someone might have liked it. I don't speak for everyone.

Kados803d ago (Edited 803d ago )

Personally was looking forward to it prior to cancellation. It looked a little rough/janky, but it was still very early in development, so i figured it would improve before launch.

Orpheo803d ago

I think the cancellation was a smart move. The main character looks cool, like Nero from "Devil May Cry 4," but the gameplay looked so boring I was yawning.

phoenixwing803d ago

I like platinum as a dev but let's be honest they were doing their low tier work on the game which they're notorious for. They'll either do S tier perfection work or they'll do whatever to just get by for the contract they have. Maybe that's changed but they were doing low tier for microsoft and microsoft called them out on it and cancelled the project. I don't blame microsoft one bit for doing that. It was basically a whatever project for platinum while they worked on the other game at the time, i forget which one it was but it was just miles better.

MadLad803d ago

Microsoft already owns the IP, has the design docs, and has a playable build. Hand the project off to an internal team or another 3rd party.
Why give a second chance to a team that phoned in development and filtered their funds into other projects?

I like Platinum, but their management can be really shady.

Bringing Scalebound to Xbox Series X Would Remedy One Big Xbox One Gen Mistake

PlatinumGames seems ready to finish Scalebound, and if Microsoft follows through with them, it would be a big boon for the Xbox Series X gen.

Makemit happen MS. You need a game like this as badly as you needed it last gen. Let’s see if they actually care enough to follow through.

moriarty1889806d ago

Something other than Halo, Forza or Gears……..that’s what.

TravsVoid806d ago (Edited 806d ago )

You couldn't pay me to ever play another Halo, Forza or Gears. Those games were so uninteresting last gen for me I don't know if I will ever get another Xbox (sold my One X) even though I prefer their controller and console features over my PS5. I actually bought a Xbox One even though I already had a PS4 expecting Scalebound and Sea of Thieves to be amazing and we all know how that turned out.
