Underworld Ascendant is the return of a classic RPG, Ultima Underworld. Members of the original team behind Ultima Underworld are working on this spiritual successor. Led by Paul Neurath, founder of OtherSide Entertainment, the team is hoping to Kickstart a game that is faithful to the original.
Taking place entirely in an underground cavern, the player will have to fight their way through monsters and rival factions in order to escape. The game promises a dynamic faction system in which your choices will affect your standing, as well as a “Improvisation Engine”, that allows you to solve challenges in a multitude of ways, each affecting the world.
Paul writes: "Underworld Ascendant is an immersive first person dungeon crawler that is heavily based around the much loved Underworld Ultima in which you play The Avatar (sadly not the airbending variety); a hero tasked with venturing into The Stygian Abyss, in order to do battle with the demon Typhon and his undead hordes."
From PSU: "When Ultima Underworld released on PCs back in 1992, it was a revelation. Developed and produced by the same developer that would go on to create the legendary likes of Deus Ex, System Shock and Bioshock, Ultima Underworld was a first-person RPG that thrust players into a subterranean world filled with sentient, intelligent races, a great story and danger around every corner."
Neil writes: "It was at the back end of 2018 where we saw 505 Games launch Underworld Ascendant on to Steam, giving PC gamers the chance to head back to The Stygian Abyss and by confronted with all manner of danger. The promise of a console release was then made, with a 2019 release date in the works. Well, just after seeing the game launch on PS4 a few days back, it has now rolled round to the world of Xbox One, with Underworld Ascendant now becoming available."
