Destiny is a hit, who cares if it's profitable?

Polygon:
Destiny is a reported $500 million investment for Activision Blizzard, and the game has a middling critical reception at launch.

That doesn't seem to have impacted the the game's success however, as Destiny continues to enjoy what seems to be a strong, often temperamental community of hardcore players.

Let's get this out of the way now: Destiny is a hit game. It sold impressive numbers, it's keeping players engaged, and it continues to be a topic of conversation in the major gaming media. Activision has successfully launched a new franchise, and will continue to support it in the coming years.

VVgamer4lifeVV3776d ago

who cares if it profits? ummm Activision does, if it doesn't make money it doesn't make sense.

Bansai3776d ago

Yep, it's a (s)hit, that's for sure.

lipton1013776d ago

Haters gonna hate^^^^. But in other news! I hope it was profitable. It's not that bad of a game whatsoever. For those that mindlessly hate, get behind your computer screen and best it. Spend your time creating. Not hating. Learn from the mistakes, miscalculations and missteps of others.

pivotplease3776d ago (Edited 3776d ago )

My issue is the amount of false information surrounding this game. It was $500 million for the 10 year franchise plan...not for the single game. The game is honestly tiny compared to a lot of others. Even if you factor in servers there's no way it cost them that much to make the first game alone.

MadMenX3776d ago

no, its not a hit. Move on people.

BiggerBoss3776d ago

Please inform us how its not a hit? In all ways except for metacritic score, Destiny is a massive success. Even if you dont like the games, give credit where credit is due

lipton1013776d ago

Ha! Immaturity at its best. Create something better if you really hate the game that much. Give you life some meaning. Leave a legacy behind. We spend so much time on the creations of others when the real rewards (money) come from creating new media ourselves. Source: A fledgling screenwriter with dreams (me)

DougLord3776d ago

Destiny is massively profitable. They did not spend $500 million. They plan on spending $500mm over the next 10 years. They made $340mm in less then a year.

reallyNow3776d ago

exactly. what the hell are people smoking these days? ahaha

fei-hung3776d ago

Bullcrap article entirely based on bull as bull gets clicks.

SteamPowered3776d ago

GTA V cost around $265 Mil to make and yet made $800 mil in the first 24 hours of release. That to me would be a hit. Since its release, GTA V is on pace to make over $1 Billion in revenue with its Remaster.
That to me is Massively Profitable. Destiny has burned through its good will already with the mediocre launch. They will have a hard time the second time around with selling people Destiny 2.

SamPao3776d ago (Edited 3776d ago )

What logic is that
What mediocre launch? It was massive and made a profit within hours and people are still playing it. That is a hit.
It doesn't matter if you like it or not. This game is massive (as far as sales and potential go) and nr.2 will likely be a hit too.
(Im not much of a fan myself but Im not gonna downplay its success because of personal preference)

Baka-akaB3776d ago (Edited 3776d ago )

That made little sense . it just means that GTA is the bigger hit , as expected by well anyone from regular players to analysts and industry onlookers .

What you are saying paramounts to Captain America Winter soldier not being a box office hit , because Hunger games Mockingjay was bigger as expected as well .

fr0sty3776d ago

GTAV is the fifth installment (canonical) of a MAJOR worldwide AAA franchise that has been selling billions of dollars worth of product for decades.

GTA1 didn't do anywhere near as well as Destiny did. Both were new IP. So, where will Destiny be by its 5th installment?

Yetter3776d ago

i don't care if its profitable I care if its fun, and it's not

SamPao3776d ago

Who are you to tell people what is fun? You may not have had fun but millions others did.

Yetter3776d ago

I am me. Fun is subjective. Its my opinion and this is the internet. I suggest you get used to it

cell9893776d ago

You must not like social games, which is why you don't think it's fun. Try doing VOG with friends, it can be extremely fun.

elninels3775d ago

Dying Light has covered my co-op needs lately. Much more sd o than destiny ever had. That being said it is clearly a success. I wish bungee remembered how to write.

BiggerBoss3776d ago

I disagree. The one thing Destiny had going for it imo was that it was fun.

I can fully acknowledge the game's flaws (bad mission design, mediocre story, aggravating loot system) but I thought the core gameplay was very enjoyable, especially with friends.

To each his own though:)

He paid billions for Starfield. This should be the real story.

Microsoft bought all of Zenimax Media for 7 billion, while Sony paid 4 billion for Bungie. I think Microsoft got the better deal due to acquiring Fallout, ElderScrolls and Doom.

anast283d ago

This can't be true. They only bought Starfield...

@anast
Should've thought that one out buddy, lol.

So you're saying that Microsoft has missed out on so many huge gaming franchise in the last 25 years from GTA exclusivity to guitar hero and destiny it's just laughable they had so many misses

Reaper22_283d ago

Yea, but they're still 100 times more wealthy than Sony. I would say it worked out well.

Gamingsince1981283d ago

Xbox is dead all that money doesn't help.

Hypertension140283d ago

What has work out well? It sure as hell had nothing to do with Xbox.

andy85283d ago

That isn't because of Xbox though. This is a gaming page, not an I get supplemented by father Windows page

Bathyj283d ago

Microsoft's money has nothing to do with Xbox.
Xbox is a money pit to them they would love to ditch but are after some ROI first.

Let's face it, Xbox is like a red headed stepchild that steals from you to buy drugs.

Hofstaderman283d ago (Edited 283d ago )

MIicrosoft is NOT XBOX. The current situation illustrates this. And Microsoft wants its ROI.

@Bathyj and daddy Satya has just force admitted Phil to rehab.

gold_drake283d ago

you know why MS has so much money, and it aint cause of the gaming xbox branch.

so lets not kid ourselves.

PhillyDonJawn283d ago

Xbox was shown to be more profitable than ps

jznrpg283d ago

@PhillyDownJawn not more profitable. More revenue with ABK acquisition but them going multiplat shows they are not making much profit

ocelot07282d ago

That's great for Xbox gamers ain't it that Microsoft are more wealthy than Sony. Is that really a argument use are using now lol?

Imagine me in my job. Arguing with a fellow security guard at another company. Hahah well the company I work for is worth £800m the one you work for is only work £600m!

282d ago
Knightofelemia282d ago

Microsoft may have more money but Sony has the talented studios and the games to back up those studios.

Plus turning down Marvel too. Spiderman is only exclusive to Playstation because of that

Hedstrom283d ago

Best deal deal in gaming must be when Sony bought Insomniac for 229 million dollars. They made over 800 millions on Spiderman for the ps4 alone. Thats just crazy!

XBManiac282d ago

More in the 1.000 million now.

gold_drake283d ago

another Interview?

how is he the only one who loves the spotlight as much as he does lol

Futureshark282d ago

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

DarXyde282d ago

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

DivineHand125282d ago

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

https://www.avclub.com/sony...

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.
