PlayStation 4 2014 Sales Overview - 13.65M Units Sold, 73.28M Games Sold

VGChartz Writes: "Let’s first take a look at the hardware sales of the PlayStation 4. Sony’s 8th generation home consoles sold 13.65 million units worldwide in 2014 to bring its lifetime sales up to 18.5 million units. Hardware sales in 2014 were up 208 percent year-over-year. That is not surprising as the PlayStation 4 was only out in two months in 2013.

The PlayStation 4 sold 6.59 million units during the holiday quarter, October through December. That accounts for 48.3 percent of the total sales for the entire year. December was the biggest month for the console where it sold 3.2 million units, followed by November where it sold 2.31 million units.

Hardware sales also tripled in September to 1.75 million units, when compared to August thanks to the release of Destiny. The PlayStation 4 also sold more than one million units in October where it sold 1.08 million units."

Those are amazing sales figure for the PlayStation 4's first year. 13.65 million sold in just one year is great. 2015 is shaping up to be an even more amazing year. Also incredible how 3 games sold more than 5 million copies.

trunkswd3382d ago

I agree that 2015 will be an even better year for the PlayStation 4. Looking at past generations 2016/2017 will be the peak years for the PlayStation 4. The PS4 should be able to sell 16-18m in 2015 and around 20m in 2016 and 2017.

cellode3382d ago

You are saying the PlayStation 4 will sell around 75 million by the end of 2017. That is a decent prediction. Though I think it will get to more like 80 to 90 million by then.

trunkswd3382d ago

@Cellode - If it reached 90 million units by the end of 2017 that would mean it would have to average 23.8 million units in 2015, 2016 and 2017. I don't see sales jumping up that much in 2015.

cellode3382d ago

@trunkswd

That is a really good point. I hadn't thought of it that way. For it to hit my lower end prediction it would need to average 20.5 million units per year, which is possible. 2015 has a lot more releases than 2014.

trunkswd3382d ago

@Cellode - 80 million is possible, though unlikely. The Wii was able to do it in a similar timeframe (4 full years + launch period). However, the PlayStation 4 is currently tracking behind the Wii.

bouzebbal3382d ago (Edited 3382d ago )

insane numbers as usual.
now games will really start to kick and well spaced until december.. Show starts with The Order.

Congrats to Sony on the PS4s continued and impressive worldwide success. I can see 2015 being an even stronger year for the PlayStation brand with all of the great looking new games coming out this year.

@trunkswd

Yeah that is a good point.

Magicite3381d ago

Are these numbers accurate?
PS4 sold 4,5m in 2013 and Sony stated that PS4 was at 18,5 at start of this January, so by simple logic - PS4 sold 14m in 2014.
Correct me if Im wrong.

Rimeskeem3382d ago

never dipped under the 500k mark.

trunkswd3382d ago

Yeah that is really impressive for a console's first year. Casuals normally don't buy consoles until the price hits $200 to $300. Sales will only increase over the next few years.

cellode3382d ago

Agreed Trunks. With the releases sales should remain above 600k a month.

trunkswd3382d ago

@Cellode - Yeah more than likely.

chikane3382d ago

nice numbers..Around April i should finally join my fellow ps friends in finally owning a ps4 so happy

shadyiswin3382d ago

i think sony sales will start to decline, they already have. The hype will slowly die down after there games fail to deliver. If they announce a price cut at e3 then they will have a chance of competing in the states otherwise i see them losing atleast 5 out of the 12 months with nov and dec being a giving for microsoft.

MasterCornholio3382d ago

Its called the end of the holiday season buddy. Everyone's sales drop after it even Microsoft's.

BTW the PS4 is still outselling the Xbox One by almost double the amount globally.

CernaML3382d ago

Hey truefan1, haven't seen you around since the Xbox One lost August, September and October that you predicted it would win. :)

pyramidshead3382d ago

lol that's truefan1's alt? Makes me feel all MS fans sound the same. I miss his original account dearly as he provided endless entertainment.

TheStrokes3382d ago

I wouldnt say that. I know quite a few people who haven't made the jump yet, and more of them are going for Playstation rather than Xbox.

pyramidshead3382d ago

Their games fail to deliver? Is that some hope I see there? ;)

Going by your own logic, to compete MS has to drastically drop the price again this holiday season, I think to about $250 or a little bit higher just to claim nov and december npds again. Seems to be a strategy that's worked and I see them exploiting it again.

All while PS4 dominates the rest of the year and only gets a marginal price drop come holiday season as they know they'll still sell well, just not $250 well.

It's also amazing how the NA is the only place where Xbox sells now. Sony has Europe and soon to have China on lock down. Wouldn't be surprised if Xbox starts to pull out of a lot of countries. The first being Japan, it's sold 300units recently. LOL

rainslacker3381d ago

Yeah, historically that's the way it always happens. /s

Anyhow, if they continue to sell at their current rate, a price cut may be further off than normal. Or, Sony could decide to push sales harder for their holiday line up with a price cut. E3 will be 1.5 years into the generation, so that's about the time we'd see one anyhow.

As far as games delivering, I don't think that will be a problem this year overall. One or two may not live up to expectations, as per usual, but Sony has a good track record of delivering content. They also have a strong 3rd/2nd party support which gives them quite a few exclusives, and then the multi-plats which will also push people to buy the system. You just have to accept that overall, PS gets more content than X1, and just has a wider appeal to it's software due to it's diverse line up, and Sony's willingness to market that diversity.

More interested in money than giving fans what they want. Such a shame

CrimsonWing697d ago

With the amount of money they generated, I just don’t understand the scrubbing of this. It would’ve been fantastic for fans.

Profchaos7d ago

I really want to know who drove the decision to focus on multiplayer was it Rockstar or take two.

Because when online started taking off many of the studio leads began having falling outs and leading including a founder

Demetrius7d ago

Ikr mfs that greedy it's ridiculous

andy857d ago

This makes me sad. Trevor was one of my favourite characters in gaming

One of the reason I believe once gta 6 release, most of us thoroughly play it, enjoy the world they crafted then after that no offline support, no dlc at all
