PS4 falls behind Dreamcast in Japan sales during same time period

Sony's PS4 console has officially fallen behind Sega's final console in sales when compared during the same time period. While this doesn't mean much for the future of Sony's PS4 console really, it does paint an interesting picture for just how different the Japanese console gaming landscape was 15 years ago compared to how console gaming performs there today.

Not a fair comparison. Dreamcast wouldn't have had half the sales in a Japan market dominated by mobile gaming. Console gaming was thriving in Japan back then, yet Dreamcast still had terrible sales.

mrbojingles3487d ago

Article says all of that. And the description says this doesn't mean anything for the console's future too.

Its amazing how bloggers have nothing productive to think about nowadays.
Why are they alwYs digging up a dead console instead of letting them rest in piece?
And we know when they talk about Dreamcast they imply a "discontinued console"
These bloggers have a death wish or something?
First they compare the Wii U to the Dreamcast now its the PS4's turn. Did they do the same with the 360?

My goodness!

What do they hope to accomplish with this ....just for clicks?

Like Japan matters these days as compared to two generations ago..

PS4 will make up sales elsewhere. Still the fastest selling system behind DS1. This is just "spin". I haven't used the word "spin" in a while.

And I haven't had to use the word spin because people's doubts about PS4 has been suppressed. They have just accepted that the PS4 is dominating.

The Dreamcast did pretty well in the beginning. It did suffer from a short launch stock. Sega published dreamcast games well into 2004 in Japan.

The PS4 has had very little exclusive japanese-centric games, and the fact that it competes with the DC in a much healthier market with little support, is a good sign of future success

Either way, dreamcast sold alot when it first came out and had tons of awesome games in its 2 years of good support. Also was half the price and had 50$ and cheaper games.

Dreamcast sent me into a rage of buying games when I was a kid, and I had like 12 in a year or so. For xmas one year I got tony hawk 2, shenmu, nfl 2k1, and maybe it was legacy of kain soul reaver. I also got dead or alive 2 and soul caliber on the same day once just because. I love my dreamcast even though it was only around for a short time. It even caused me to carry that habit over to my ps2 when I got it and had like 10 or so games in about a year.

Volkama3486d ago

I loved my Dreamcast and had somewhere around 50 games for it, but if you want to fall into a game buying frenzy then check out PC gaming some time. I bought about 150 this year alone :o

Jonny5isalive3486d ago

yeah I only have a laptop that can run diablo 3 so I dont do much PC gaming anymore. Back then tho I had a pentium 3 with a voodoo 3 and it played all games at max and I played ALOT or PC games.

I think back then pc and console were more separate when it comes to game selection then it is today. Even if I did have a better PC I really wouldnt buy that many games on steam like that. Price doesnt sway me that much when it comes to actually PLAYING the game. I would still only buy games that I wanted to play eventually

Volkama3486d ago

Yes, the games catalogues used to be a lot further apart than they are now. They don't make console games like they used to back when Japan loud and in charge :)

Magicite3487d ago

even wiiU with all its kiddie games is struggling in Japan. Heres hope Persona 5 and FF15 gonna help PS4.

I agree don't mess with the dreamcast and neo•geo! 2 of the best consoles to ever grace the hardcore gamers

hduce3487d ago

Well Said THamm. I agree.

Some thing people just shouldn't bring up as much as I would like to throw this in sony fans faces No console is doing that good in japan. so why even bother to bring it up.

LAWSON723487d ago

It is just interesting to see how the JP market has changed. No need to use it for arguments. It is not like Xbone is doing even remotely well in the country.

knifefight3487d ago (Edited 3487d ago )

You're right. Talking about things is stupid and no one should do it. Especially when facts and historical precedents are brought in. Yuck.

Fil1013487d ago

Lol Xbox fanboys gonna love this.

Death3487d ago

Xbox fanboys have been saying this for months. It's the Playstation fanboys that like to point the finger and say "look how bad the XBox is doing in Japan" without mentioning PS4 sales are tanking hard too and in their home market to boot.

madjedi3486d ago

Everything is tanking in japan that isn't mobile games and to a lesser extent 3ds sales and even those are suffering.

So that is the best you can throw at PlayStation fanboys death,"lol the ps4 is failing in it's home territory of japan" really that is your best shot. Might as well start playing taps, if this is a victory.

It's already sold 10 million since it's release despite the console market in japan tanking for everyone.

Xbox has always sold like crap in japan(no clue why), what's new is both sony and nintendo's console doing the same terrible numbers.

Thankfully the console industry does not revolve around japan in regards to measuring healthy systems sales, but rather a whole global market.

Nope xbox fans aren't cheering this news, your mistakingly them for the group that has been preaching the death of the console market before the 2 new current gen systems released fil101.

Well besides death that is.

knickstr3487d ago (Edited 3487d ago )

This kind of seems like click bait to me. It's like they're trying to find any negative they can about the consoles just to get people to click. Both PS4 and Xbox one are selling faster than the predecessors world wide. I think consoles will make it just fine. The Japanese market has just obviously moved on from them.
