Unity Engine Free on Xbox One

Unity announced today that a public preview of its 4.3 engine is now available for free to all developers registered with ID@Xbox who have a development kit.

The ID@Xbox program is kind of a joke. I got into it, but they keep telling me they don't have enough SDK's to give out, so basically I can't test or publish any games.

Their idea of making every Xbox One an SDK still makes the most sense, in this day and age everyone expects to be able to write code for every device they own. I can write code for my lightbulbs, yet I can't write code for the Xbox One? So tired of gaming companies living in the past.

To note, this isn't xbox at all but Unity themselves doing this. Unity changed the way they charge developers. Microsoft had nothing to do with this change at all.

No they didn't make Unity but they are lowering the barrier for devs to get started by eliminating the cost of it.

That's not true.

You still need to pay for the licensing of the software to develop and put onto various platforms. But, like Windows8 apps, they don't make you pay for any additional costs on XBO.

MS isn't paying for any of this, this is just Unity's way of encouraging more development work on platforms that they commonly use. Well, XBO is pretty much like Win8.

It sounds exactly like MS and Unity working together (ie partnered) to provide this at no cost. What would Unity have to gain by offering it free when they could charge?

You still have to pay for the pro kit...

They're not losing anything, just making sure more Indie devs buy their kits. Unity makes most of its money on Android/iOS developers right now, which they do charge for.

Unity is on every platform, including WiiU. Why praise people for being there. Unity is the one doing all the work here by making their engine available on all those platforms.
