Dragon Age: Inquisition seems destined to be special but why is it not exciting? - VideoGamer

VideoGamer: "To this day I think Dragon Age: Origins is one of the best RPGs in the history of games. The sequel, however, didn’t strike the same chord. It wasn’t a bad follow-up – far from it – but the change in lead character and lack of influence from the first title meant in many ways it felt like a brand new experience. If you had never even heard of Dragon Age, II could’ve easily been your starting point. Because of this, Inquisition is suffering from the successor's hangover."

It's probably becasue you know The Witcher 3 is coming, and Dragon Age Inquisition can't stand against it.

Cat3608d ago

I'm in the "gimme both" camp.

incendy353608d ago

Haha, me too! Can't wait for some next gen RPG action.

I think people are skeptical after dragon age 2. I will still buy this though.

TheFutureIsBlue3608d ago

I am skeptical, considering all the previews of Dragon Age 2, and hell, even the reviews made the game seem better than it was...but from what I have seen of the third one its looks promising.

That, and like others have stated, it does not look as good as The Witcher 3.

Cat3608d ago

totally agree with this - and honestly, with the EA factor. But even with DA2 I more than got my money's worth of fun out of it. Sure I wanted more from the environments and the rigidity of the main quest was...well. I'll just stop there. ;) I still want MOAR DA. :)

NovusTerminus3608d ago (Edited 3608d ago )

Because gameplay wise it looks like Dragons Dogma. That dragon battle during E3 looked like a cut and paste of the Drake fights, even down to the spells casted.

Not a bad thing per se, but that's all I can think about when seeing it.

anticlimax3608d ago

I agree, although I do think it's a bad thing. It doesn't need to resemble DD or The Witcher, it needs to resemble Origins.

Aleithian3608d ago

Several reasons I'm not excited. Not sure how widely felt they are. In no particular order:

1. Dragon Age 2

2. They dropped the central thread of the plot - the Grey Wardens. There is no coherency within the series.

3. Whether it was originally intended to be such, the central thread of the story has become the conflict between the mages and the church. This bores me.

4. There is no continuity of character in the series. *I* am not a personality throughout the events of the world.

5. There is no consistent obstacle to face. First it was the dragon, then the mage/church conflict, then "chaos".

In sum, the game lacks STORY, CHARACTERIZATION, and PLOT, and its THEME is boring. GAMEPLAY and GRAPHICS wise, it's nothing special. So, really, there's nothing much to be excited for.

Cat3608d ago

I am disappointed that the Grey Wardens story has been dropped, with so few known surviving wardens it could have gotten really interesting. That said, if I were to try for a silver lining it would be that at least they aren't hamstrung by the Grey Wardens.

I agree with the Mage conflict. Plus, I really resented the way the line was handled in DA 2. I'm sorry, I'm not going to let Anders bully and manipulate, no matter my sympathies.

Personality/character, being stuck as human was a miss in DA 2, at least that's corrected here.

For the rest, if I'm being realistic I'll play it, I'll probably have fun with it, but I probably will have these same complaints in the end. At least the environments won't recycle...

Aleithian3608d ago

I agree - I'll likely get it, eventually. But I swore after DA2 that I wouldn't buy another new. They got $60 of my hard-earned cash on Day 1 for the abortion that was DA2. Gamestop will get my business a year or two after release.

ArchangelMike3608d ago

I completely agree with you. As a comparison, look at how Bioware handled the Story, plot progression and characterisation of the Mass Effect series. Most importantly there was continuity across the whole series.

You had continuity within the story, first introduce a Reaper, develop that story with an impending invasion, conclude with a full scale galactic reaper war. The characterisation and plot development is also consistent both with the main protagonist as well as the antagonists, same with the supporting cast.

Dragon Age seems to have lost all of that, no central story, no central charater, no overall continuity. I think while it still looks like a game worth buying, it looses it's edge and is no longer as compelling as it would have been.

Aleithian3607d ago

Yup. And it's important to compare this to other RPGs that lack continuity between entries - Elder Scrolls for instance. There is only a vague historical continuity between games, yet we love ES. Why? I think for two main reasons:

1. We know what we're getting when we buy it.

2. Gameplay above all - we can get lost in each entry, creating our own story and characters. Heck, if we don't want to play the main story line, we can still carve a story for ourselves out of the secondary plot lines.

The fact that this game has almost had 4yrs of dev time (As opposed to me2/3s 2 yr dev time and da2 ridiculously short 15 month dev time and they made an dao expansion during that time) gives me hope. But if this disappoints then I'll have to move on from Bioware.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Retro Review – A Nostalgic Leap Short Of Legendary

Dragon Age: Inquisition, developed by BioWare, is the third installment in the cherished Dragon Age series. It represents a major evolution from its predecessor, Dragon Age II, incorporating elements that were well-loved in the original Dragon Age: Origins but also introducing new features that stand on their own. While Inquisition improves upon Dragon Age II in many respects, it falls short of the exceptional standards set by Origins.

The quality of these free games has been awesome. Before anyone says they are not free I was already giving Amazon $6 a month for prime shipping and video this isn't why I pay for my subscription

Teflon02910d ago

Still technically paying for it, even if it wasn't your intent. They've been giving out games with Twitch prime, they just changed the name. It's the same sub as that was. If you weren't aware, great. But you're paying for it.

That being said, I don't personally care. For me as long as you're willing to pay that for 1 service and get more. I personally take it as free. Like prime video, music though the prime version is trash, and all the Twitch benefits are all free to me because I didn't care about those when I got it. Just comes with it.

Only noted because that's technically wrong as a defense to that argument, whether I'm on yourside with the initial statement lol

mkis007910d ago

It's free to anyone who has already been paying. IDK why people need to split hairs.

TinkerNation910d ago

How does Prime Gaming work? Do you keep the games, or is it only as long as you have Prime?

Germaximus910d ago

lol Nice distraction from how they're now charging people to increase viewership. It's "just an option." /wink lol
