Valve still hasn't ruled out making its own Steam Machine

Engadget - It looks like Valve's not totally ruling out making its own version of the retail Steam Machines that so many other PC manufacturers are making currently. During Valve's press conference this evening at CES 2014, company head Valve Newell said, "We're gonna make that decision as we go along." when asked whether Valve would make its own retail Steam Machine. "We have plans to build more machines as customers ask," he continued.

I love the Steam Controller,...But i see no point in these PC's/"Steam Box".

I can understand the reason behind a $499 Steam Box ( Will Pull In Tons Of Console Gamer's ), but why Make & Release a $1500 Steam Box? Seem's like nothing more than a waste of Time & Resource.

They Should have just released the Controller.

nukeitall4190d ago

I would be more interrested in a steam box if valve built it instead of 3rd parties I no longer trust.

NastyDaddeh4190d ago

Its for those who are interested in PC gaming, have money to spend but do not wish to learn to build a pc

LoaMcLoa4190d ago

Most PCs are packed with Windows, which increases the cost of the PC. Valve wants to replace Windows (For gaming) with Steam OS which is free.

Steam machines only focuses on gaming. It'll be an easy and effective way to get a gaming PC without to have build your own. And as I said, you'll save a lot of money when the media and OS software isn't included.

I can't wait to get mine and put under the television. No more PS or XBox for me. The exclusives do not matter too me besides i am tired of playing "exclusive" 3 or "exclusive" 4.

-Foxtrot4190d ago

So you'd take a platform with no exclusive over a one with exclusives despite them both playing multiplatform games.

darx4190d ago (Edited 4190d ago )

I really do not have a response to someone uninformed as yourself. As I said you play Uncharted 1 or 2, Halo 1, 2, Infamous 1, 2, Killzone 1, 2 then you played them all.

-Foxtrot4190d ago (Edited 4190d ago )

I'm uniformed...REALLY

You've just listed a bunch of different games, from Uncharted to inFAMOUS to Halo etc and your saying if you've played one you've played them all

I mean I'd understand if you said something like Halo, Killzone, Resistance, COD or Battledied if they were exclusives...you know a bunch of games which are all the same genre at least but come on.

I think your the uniformed one here mate, if you think theres no improvement with each sequel then your dead wrong

Sorry but I'd rather play on a platform that offers some exclusives along with third party games then a platform with ONLY third party games

darx4190d ago

Yes you are uniformed. All you need to do is hit up Steam website and look at the massive amount of games you will not find on either the PS or Xbox. It's that simple MATE!

Kurylo3d4190d ago

You do realize that PC has more exclusives then every console combined.... don't you? Maybe you don't..

JBSleek4190d ago

He's taking a platform with more games, cheaper software, and not paying twice to use internet he already paid for.

Also it has games that consoles don't have so the exclusive argument goes both ways.

Thye should of done this from the start...not have 13 bloody machines to pick from

Not really at all what I was hoping them to be.

One machine, two different controllers (the one they have and a traditional one) and their OS...thats all

Console gamers will be fine with their chosen console and PC Gamers I'm guessing will be fine with their built up gaming rigs. I know some PC Gamers get used to rigs they've built and I don't blame them as they are built the way they like

testerg354190d ago

And don't forget anywhere from $500-$1900 from those 13 different boxes.

-Foxtrot4190d ago

Yeah that aswell

If your aiming towards bridging the gap between PC and consoles then the last thing you want to do is cause confusion.

Simple things are the most effective

Valve Makes Up for Steam Deck Repair Delay by Gifting Free Game

Valve gave a user Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for free as compensation for the long wait during their Steam Deck repair.

UltimateOwnage42d ago

I had a similar experience when I initially pre-ordered my Deck. There was an issue during shipping and they offered me a customer service perk for the hassle and let me pick any game on Steam. It was super nice of them. I got a copy of Rime.

Valve doesn't need to compete with Nintendo Switch 2 right now, suggests poll

There have been plenty of comparisons online between the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2, but does Valve really need to compete?

gold_drake73d ago

i love how people think this would be a fair "fight"

SegaSaturn66972d ago

Steamdeck plays Switch games better than the switch hardware.

I see no reason why this won't continue with the successors. Switch will sell more, sure. But those who game on PC always come out ahead both in enjoyment and value for their money.

Neonridr72d ago

you think a Steam Deck is going to emulate a Steam 2 when it's arguably more powerful than it?

Interesting..

Vits72d ago

We're going to have to wait and see. Currently, there's no technology that would allow a Steam Deck 2 to achieve a performance leap over the Steam Deck 1 similar to what the Switch 2 offers over the Switch 1, without sacrificing the device's portability.

We'll either need AMD to seriously improve the efficiency of their cores, so we can get something with the rasterization power of a Radeon 8060S but without the power consumption of an Xbox Series S, or Valve would have to invest heavily in a translation layer for ARM. Neither of these paths is easy to achieve, so we probably shouldn't expect a Steam Deck 2 for at least a 3 or 4 more years.

Inverno72d ago

Considering that other companies have shat out multiple PC handhelds already while Valve hasn't even mentioned a successor tells me they aren't looking to compete with anyone. They went for a console experience and that includes holding off on new hardware til there's a generational leap.

--Onilink--72d ago

None of those other companies can realistically compete with Valve either. Valve can sell the hardware for a minimal gain and still know they are for the most part, just having every user still use Steam.

Every other handheld has to make its profit entirely on the hardware, which is why most of them went for an even more PC enthusiast market/price point

That is the one point where Nintendo does compete with Valve, or Sony with their rumored handheld or even more so MS, if they release a first party handheld (with a decent version of handheld windows)

What many people don't get is that most of Steam Deck users have a high-end or at least a good enough PC alongside the Steam Deck. Yes, we like better graphics and higher refresh rates and we get them in our PC, we are not relying on the Steam Deck for them. We use the Deck for other reasons and in other eventualities, where we are willing to compromise on all these things, because we still get to enjoy them when we can/feel like it in the PC. Thus, a direct comparison with a sole device like the Switch is misplaced. Of course you need the Switch 2 to be strong if there is no stronger alternative to play your games in. By the way I got a Switch on day 1 and I loved it, it's just that I'm not really playing it anymore.
