Xbox One: 'Turning Every Console Into Dev Kit Is Next Step' - Microsoft

Some Xbox One owners have already discovered a way of turning their Xbox Ones into dev kits, but Microsoft has advised against users turning on dev kit options, warning that this could render their console unusable. Charla also commented on the ID@Xbox programme's launch parity clause, which requires games to release on Xbox One at the same time as on other platforms.

I really like the xbox one and its games so far but microsoft needs to turn every xbox one into a game console first because there are too much focus elsewhere

FPSRUSSIA4214d ago

there focusing on entertainment more then the games.

thrust4214d ago

And yet is it doing the best with games...

things that make you go hmmmm.

oh and in before the wait tills!

zerogotit4214d ago

I dont understand how noone understands that the games are going to come. At the end of the day games are first then everything else second. Since we all know were getting the games, theyre focusing on bringing out what else it can do. You cant say theyre not focusing on games when literally every good game ps4 is coming out with in the next year xbox is also going to have excluding infamous & the order.

christocolus4214d ago (Edited 4214d ago )

@fpsrussia..

How is that? ms budgeted $1b for games alone..Their launch line up was great(forza5, dr3, ryse, zoo tycoon, crimson skies, powerstar golf, fantasia .etc Their post launch line up(halo, d4, quantum break, sunset overdrive, fable legends, kinect sports rivals, black tusk ip,titanfall etc) is amazing and everyday you hear of more unannounced projects, ms beefing up their internal studios with more talent, upcoming indie games and deals with 3rd party devs etc...

I think your wrong bro.phil even stated that they had so many games to announce and that it would be difficult to do it all in one event so they would have to split the announcements across various events starting next year. If anything, ms has shown they are focused and commited to pumping out great ips this gen... i laugh at people who think ms learnt nothing from the criticism it got from its fans last gen..expect many more game announcements and partnerships with japanese devs too.

Turning Every Console Into Dev Kit Is Next Step..

...to piracy.

Someone is going to figure out how to put a console into dev mode, and piracy will become rampant. That was one of the reasons why they wanted to force online, so they could always check to make sure a console wasn't hacked.

rainslacker4214d ago (Edited 4214d ago )

@gaffy

It's very highly unlikely, read guaranteed, that they won't release a full dev SDK for this program. That bit of code that prevents piracy on the system is hidden away very deep in their multiple operating systems.

The ID@Xbox program will probably only offer a high level version of the SDK, with no direct access to the hardware like you would get in a full dev kit. And that's OK for who this program is targeting.

Full dev kits require strong NDA's, and qualifications of more than the $99/yr subscription fee.

what the hell are you talking about? The game lineup is phenomenal, im really tired of hearing this crap about Microsoft not focusing on gaming. DR3, Ryse, Forza are all amazing games and one of the best launch game lineups ever in gaming. You guys seem to think anything Microsoft says that isnt related to gaming is a bad thing. They are adding features grow up and realize that these machines are no longer "just gaming machines" they do much other things. They are thinking of gaming but they cant just think about it 24 hours a day. In fact, Sony has been barely thinking of gaming what did they show at Gamescom? What did they show at VGX? Nothing, so please enough with this bullcrap.

imt5584214d ago

What Microsoft show at VGX?

BanginBiscuitz4214d ago

@IMT.. Quantum Break, and TitanFall, the 2 most anticipated games since we began hearing about them. Feel a bit sour now dont you?

Eonjay4214d ago

@BanginBiscuitz

Stop trying to tell people what the most anticipated game is. Let the gamers speak for themselves.

Actually Watch Dogs is the most anticipated game because it has the most pre-orders followed by Destiny and then Titanfall and Infamous Second Son.

imt5584214d ago (Edited 4214d ago )

Wow, Quantum Break and Titanfall, soooo awesome....NOT.

Well Uncharted teaser is better than these 2 games.

or this :

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

If some games are not ready to be shown on stage, why to show them? Don't underestimate Sony Worldwide Studios. So the X360 has "more" games at the beginning? Tell me how end it at the end of current generation. Quantum Break, i presume, will be great game. Of course, it's Remedy, but Titanfall... I don't want to play last-gen tech game on XO, c'mon, dude. Buy X360 version instead.

In other news...

Quote form article :

...As you have heard it already, project CARS developers have informed the world that eSRAM can help mitigate "some" advantages that the PS4 has over Xbox One! This could mean that the game is either running below 1080p on both next gen consoles or was graphically downgraded to achieve parity at 1080p...

What parity? I don't want to play some shitty ports on PS4 because Xbone is weak. PS4 first, use the advantage of the console, and then make port on Xbone.

Gotta say, that was very good stealth trolling by your part Hatsune and this made me chuckle; "but microsoft needs to turn every xbox one into a game console".

It is a games console man. It's like a woman, it can multi-task. A rather hefty women with her ever watchful eye on you, recognising you, listening to you. Talking to her will turn her on, but only if you do it the right way. Occasionally you have to punch her to make her work.....okay that's too far. I've had too much caffeine...

But, turning every X1 into a devkit will be brilliant. MS can hit the nail on the head if its a really open development environment. And if the X1 is really getting smacked around by the PS4, MS should go all out and make it totally open, relinquishing the overbearing control it likes to have on things like this for the sake of the brand surviving.

Convas4214d ago

"Talking to her will turn her on, but only if you do it the right way."

Very few of the gentlemen on this site will realize this is FAR closer to the real-life, gospel truth than you'd know.

malokevi4214d ago

Titanfall, QB, Halo 5, PVZ, Sunset, Kinect Sports, Fable, Lionhead MMO, F2P MMO, Spark, Tons of multiplats, Tusk & other unannounced/teased projects.

What was it you were saying about games...?

We've seen far more from MS then we've seen from Sony as far as games go. And you can prattle on about "potential" and "Uncharted 4", and parrot how "xbox has no games/doesn't focus on games... yadda yadda". Fortunately, your ill-conceived opinion has no impact on the reality of the situation. The games that are coming down the pipes for X1 leave me feeling remarkably great about the next 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months of gaming on X1. Coupled with original programing in 2014, and an ever-growing feature set... I would say that there is absolutely no reason to complain!

I have yet to feel truly justified in my PS4 purchase. It's fine... but comparably, and considering I am consolidating my library of multiplatform games on my Xbox One, the exclusive offerings from Sony in the foreseeable future simply don't do it for me. Infamous is not enough.

3-4-54214d ago

It's a cool idea, but how many people are actually going to take the time to make the games ?

Most would rather play them.

Forza, Dead Rising, Titan Fall, Halo, Quantum Break,Sunset Overdrive, Fable Legends. Yep, Microsoft isn't focusing on the gamers.

Infernostew4214d ago

Taking away 3rd and 2nd party = forza, halo, fable... rinse and repeat.

Gazondaily4214d ago

You conveniently missed Quantum Break....and Sunset Overdrive and Dead Risi......ah who am I kidding. The X1 could have a hundred exclusives and you'd post the same thing.

Infernostew4214d ago (Edited 4214d ago )

double post

Infernostew4214d ago (Edited 4214d ago )

quantum break - remedy is 2nd(?) party
sunset overdrive - insomniac is 3rd party
dead rising 3 - capcom is 3rd party

ummm... your point?

XboxFun4214d ago

So why can't we add 3rd and 2nd party games? Is there some sort of difference where the exclusives come from?

Is there some sort of school yard lunch table hierarchy going on? I know personally I throw up my nose when I find out my exclusives come from a 3rd or 2nd party.

good god not parity clauses again just make you system as powefull as the compertition then there no need for parity bull sh*t

JBSleek4214d ago

What did you even just say?

MegaRay4214d ago

Translation: PS4 is more powerful, shut up about this dev kit bullshit and make xbone more powerful

THEMIGHTYDOOVDE4214d ago

This seems like a natural step for consoles. There are certain games I will only buy on PC because of user development.

There's a lot of scope available here if MS allow it.

KingDadXVI4214d ago (Edited 4214d ago )

@FPSRUSSIA Halo Xbox One, Quantum Break, TitanFall, Ryse, Killer Instinct, Forza 5, Project Spark, Sunset Overdrive, Max, the Curse of Brotherhood amongst others would seem to disprove your comment.

Microsoft's ID@Xbox program is a completely separate department from the 3rd party and 1st party game development teams. What they do does not affect what those other teams are doing.

Great service but crappy store.

nowitzki20042080d ago

I don't have any problems with the store at all. What problems are you experiencing?

Orionsangel2080d ago

@nowitzki2004 Download errors and images not appearing.

DJStotty2080d ago

@Orions

Could be your connection/router as opposed to XBL.

Orionsangel2079d ago

@DJStotty Nope. I'm on Xfinity with 356.3Mbps

nowitzki20042079d ago (Edited 2079d ago )

@Orionsangel Maybe something to do with your connection? not meaning speed, but something in your settings. Just recently I started having trouble loading Netflix on my PS4 and Xbox One and my speed is good. But it has something to do with my Wi-fi router settings. Still havent figured it out, but it only affects Netflix so far for me, nothing else.

DJStotty2076d ago

@orions

Just because you have a fast DL/UL speed, does not mean you will not have gateway errors with a bad router/connection.

"Just yesterday Paraxox Interactive announced Crusader Kings III, mentioning that it’ll be on Xbox Game Pass for PC on day one when it releases in 2020"

Nice, not bad for a service that doesn't support the developer.

I just dl and tried Dead Cells and it's seriously some of the best fun I've had with a game.

Obscure_Observer2081d ago

"Just yesterday Paraxox Interactive announced Crusader Kings III, mentioning that it’ll be on Xbox Game Pass for PC on day one when it releases in 2020"

Microsoft making their AAA games avaliable day one on gamepass is probably incentive enough to some third party developers do the same!

So much to discover! My kids are playing Decenders and having a blast! :)

Anomander2080d ago

Check out Lonely Mountains: Downhill when it hits GamePass on Oct. 23rd. Fun Mountain biking game. No tricks to perform, just downhill racing and jumps to land. Trails to explore. Tons of fun

So the games get put on there for free without permission, and Microsoft don’t pay the developers to do it?

I think that comment was him being sarcastic and poking fun at the people saying the GamePass model isnt sustainable and why would 3rd party devs bother.

Tried this service on the PC... unfortunately the dam app was always giving error when starting to download a game.

Never had problems with other PC game launchers (Steam, Epic, Uplay, etc).

Fishy Fingers2081d ago

Thats wierd. Check your OS version is up to date.

lelo2play2080d ago

My OS is up to date (1903 version) and with original Windows key. Even deactivated my firewall... problem is the Windows Xbox app...

monkey6022081d ago (Edited 2081d ago )

I had the same problem. It's an issue with the Microsoft store in general. There's a roundabout way of fixing it involving going into the command files and clearing all the update data out. A pain in the ass and I've had to do it a couple of times but it works

nowitzki20042081d ago

PC is left out on Gamepass anyways, there is so much on Gamepass that isnt available for PC. But those games have PC versions..

timotim2081d ago

Their are games on Gamepass for PC that are not available for the service on console too. I have Ultimate which gets me all of it.

King_Noctis2080d ago

I had the same problem as well. The damn store is a pain in the rear to get working sometimes.

rainslacker2080d ago

Think that's an issue with the store itself. On my home computer, I've tried to get two apps from it on different occassions, and both times it gave me an error. Can't remember the fix, but it's fairly easy to do as I recall. Has something to do with how Win10 authenticates stuff. Still....it shouldn't be something that people have to do, and enough people need to do it that it's a well documented problem and easy to find fix.

Thats obvious. Isnt that what a rental service is. I used to rent movies all the time i never would of bought or seen. Duh

gamer78042081d ago

eh not really the same as a rental service for several reasons. You get the games for a long enough period of time to beat them, not just a couple of days to squeeze it in and not really enjoy rushing through. Additionally, you then can buy the game at a discount should you choose to. Furthermore, its different because you get access to a vast selection of games all at once, and those are the same games your friends can play, which results in an instant catalog of games that you can play together regardless if everyone wants to spend enough to buy at retail.

P_Bomb2081d ago (Edited 2081d ago )

It is a rental. I’m under no pretense that I own anything I Spotify, Netflix, Gamefly, EA Access, PS Now, PS+ or GamePass. I’m fine with that.

Blockbuster actually had similar GamePass rental packages back in the day albeit much more expensive. $30 or something and you could lease anything and everything for that month. Rentals haven’t always been limited to a weekend, and you absolutely could buy said rental at a discount. Think of it as a brick and mortar Gamefly. A world before online, heh. BC = Before Computers lol! Growing up in the NES era, I wouldn’t say I was rushed, but I absolutely could beat games in a weekend.

The scenario I see playing out, is more publishers following Hollywood and launching their own services ala EA and Ubisoft. The libraries will eventually become more splintered. Some will fail like anything does (Shomi), but I could see Squeenix, Capcom, Activision channels making a go of it, with the occasional Sega or WB. Competition will hopefully keep the prices down. My Netflix on the other hand did go up twice in two years https://www.narcity.com/new...

As it stands for games, $5 - $10 a month is still cheaper than a month of DCUO. If anything I see MMO guys having to re-evaluate their own subscription pricing.

gamer78042081d ago

@P_Bomb. I didn't say it wasn't a rental, I just said it wasn't the same as traditional rentals, for reasons I stated as it having an advantage over traditional rental services.

xTonyMontana2080d ago

The old ones like Blockbusters maybe but new ones via post you can keep them for as long as you want.

rob-GP2080d ago

You're thinking of rental services from many years ago. Look at Boomerang - the biggest UK rental service. They send you out multiple games, you keep as long as you want, then you post them back and get more. If you like the game you have, you can buy it off them for a discounted price and they post you the box and everything inside as if it was new.

So technically, it's working exactly like the rental services, only you don't have to wait to receive your next games.

gamer78042080d ago

@rob-GP I don't live in the UK, but boomerang looks just like blockbuster, you can keep a max of 2 games at a time, at a max at 4 a month, thats a far cry from 50-100 games playing and switching out as much as you want. and that costs like 12 euro, the same as gamespass and no waiting on games being available or shipping time.
