IGN AU Interview: Race Driver: Grid – Under the Hood - Up to 40,000 fully modelled, animated spectators? Codies talk tech

IGN AU writes: "Race Driver: Grid is shaping up to offer quite a compelling experience for both hardcore racing fans and the more arcade inclined, and an integral part of this is the cutting edge tech and visual panache the team are bringing to the title. The game very much picks up where DiRT left off, and we were curious to find out how that tech and aesthetic has been modified and altered for Grid. Ralph Fulton, Chief Games Designer for Race Driver: Grid, was kind enough to answer our questions.

IGN AU: Grid is a stunning looking game. Tell us a little about Ego - what modifications did you make to Neon to create it?

Ralph Fulton: The EGO Engine is basically an evolution of the NEON Engine that powered Colin McRae DiRT. The Engine itself is a continuously evolving and growing multi-platform project that has already had over 3 years of development from our Central Technology unit. For GRID, the main changes have been to allow for features which DiRT didn't have - 20 car grids, night racing, a 24 hour day-to-night cycle for Le Mans - and there have been numerous changes to our lighting and shader systems which mean that GRID is visually stunning. We've also completely rewritten our car damage and deformation system, and implemented a crowd system which allows us to populate each track with up to 40,000 fully modelled, animated spectators. So, there are a lot of improvements!"

If it does manage to have a driving model that balances realism with fun
along with the 20players online races, full damage, 40,000 spectator capacity in race tracks, sense of speed, day night cycles, full damage, drifitng and full on racing this could be very special.

This for me is what i want from a racer. Atmosphere, excitment, skill, fun online and offline. Like realism but not at the exspense of fun.

Gotta say Colin mcrae dirt was great although i wish you could race in all the other events except straight forward rally online.

JUNE COULD NOT COME SOONER!

the dirt engine was terrible.

the cars would go from 100mph to 0 in about 5 feet.

the cars felt like they had no weight which is not acceptable anymore

bumnut5986d ago

im not sure what you are trying to achieve. but if you are trying to look like an ignorant fool... good job

It was straddled between arcade/realism but it was challenging(hard to master) and extremly fun. As for no weight granted they did not take a year to slow down but they did have a sense of weight.

Read the interview to get an idea what the developers are going for. I guess if realism is solely what matters to you then there are other games that cater to that alot better.

i HAVE Forza2 which has the most impressive physics ive exp but i still want this game badly. I also for the record have mario kart and have alot fun on both.

i didn't like dirt because it was easily the worst game in the colin mcrae series.

imo the handling of the cars has got worse since clin mcrae 2.

rally games need to have cars with weight, its just feels like a kids game without weight.

i do like a nicely balanced handling (forza was a bit too serious at times) but i feel that dirt was too arcadey

but forza 2 is so awesome. Check out http://forzacentraltv.com/ . Forza has such an awesome community and support. Also check out forzamotorsports.net, the developers are certified car nuts. They truly made an awesome game.... Gotta check it out...

And all these pics are ingame. Just they are really good at taking pics....

Dareaver15986d ago

wonder how they made there car do this...

bumnut5986d ago (Edited 5986d ago )

i have played forza 2 to death, i enjoyed it but some of the races were a bit heavy, i hated the races were they made you use a monster corvette on a twisty track.

i thinks forzas worst point was the lack of content (too few tracks for my tastes)

other than that it was a good game

@dareaver1 - i gave you some agrees because you responded with sensible points which sadly is quite rare on this site now

Im more of a sims racer. I use Logi's DFP wheel. Ive completed GT3 & 4, Forza 2, and TOCA 2/3. I agree Forza's problem was too few tracks, but, aside from that its still a great game. Hope GRID isnt too arcadey, like NFS series, as far as physics go. TOCA series has been excellent also.
