Microsoft counters latest PS4 sales figures with meaningless zombie stats

Sony sold over 1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in just 24 hours after its US debut, and a week later Microsoft achieved the same 1 million sales for its Xbox One a day after its launch in several countries. Earlier today, Sony revealed it has now sold over 2.1 million PS4s as of December 1st, of which 700,000 came from Europe and Australasia after two days of availability. Microsoft has provided an update on its own next-gen progress today, but it’s not what you’d expect.

Microsoft knows how many they sold. They have to in order to competently manage supply. If they haven't said anything they may be waiting for more sales before they make an announcement. My guess is that they are selling about 1.5 to 1.8 million worldwide. The only thing I think they would worry about is being outsold in the US.

Average American plays around 13 hours a week. Roughly 2 hours a day. First day obtainers aren't usually average, so we can assume everyone wanted to squeeze a bit of their hardware. Let's assume 4 hours a day. I'd play this amount on new hardware for at least first week.
During 11 days we have around 44 hours per person, which makes 1.1m users to clock 50 million hours.
90 million miles driven in Forza 5 equals to one and a half day of Gran Turismo 5(couln't find Forza 4 statistics) at peak(with aroudnd 6m copies sold). This makes around 8.2m miles per day, which is almost 1/8, suggesting about or even more than 800k of Forza 5 sold.

TLDR: I'd guess with a wet finger in the air that aboot more than one mil for XbO, close to one mil for Forza. No reference to estimate Dead Rising 3. Suggests much stronger release and better reception than X360.

Sony did sell more systems than Microsoft but Xbox has more games to play. I should know, I have them both. You guys will hate it if Xbox was no more, it will stagnate the console industry. All i know is that our local market isnt Xbox friendly usually , and that while rare and not available in abundant stocks , the Xbox One are still available on our shelves .

I work retail in US. My store has always been HEAVY 360 sales (literally like 5:1). On black friday, I worked Midnight to 8am. We had 29 X1 and 27 PS4. By 3am we sold out of ps4, by 8am when I left we had only sold 8 x1.

I asked my manager at 8pm how many x1's we had left, she said, "Still like 7 left."

Based on the number of units sold, that'd be a more zombies tracked than the achievements would count for I'd imagine. Maybe I'm wrong since I don't care to look it up.

However, my comment was more a joke than anything. Sony is probably doing the same thing, since they track when you play a game, and it isn't much of a stretch to see how long you've played it, and what you did while playing it.

That kind of thing I don't really have a problem with if it's used to see what people enjoy doing in games, to hopefully make better games.

Kind of like how the Infamous:SS game is going by the good ending of the previous games, since that's what most people completed.

One has to understand know that the PS4 launched in Europe/AUS on black friday (nov 29th), right?

Pretty sure ms released in 13 countries so it took them 11 more then sony to match day one sales and now that sonys released in 20 more countries their sales have doubled. Personally idc which console people buy as long as they're happy with it but I see 2 issues here that seem odd. 1 ms obviously came in 2nd in their home territory of the us and 2 ms has not said a word as to how many consoles they've sold since launce day when the numbers matched sony. If sales was still evenly matched or pretty close they would be bragging but they're not, instead they're playing around hiding behind irrelevant numbers of game statistics. In early 2012, Microsoft said the average Xbox gamer spent 84 hours per month on XBL, half of that gaming.

That means roughly 1.39 hours per day, and 16.68 hours per 12 days (amount of time Xbox One has been out).

MS says 50 million hours have been spent online on Xbox One.

Going by those average statistics, 2.9 million Xbox One's have been sold.

Very rough, and probably skewed, as I imagine the average per gamer would rise because of new hardware.

So I would say between 1.5 million and 2 million sold, closer to the former.

My friends list is 50 people UK, Irish, French, and Dutch people.

I only see 1 person on my friends list who has got a next gen console. It was an x box 1

I know the PS4 would shouldn't up, but all 48 have played a game in the last week on the x box 360. I don't think they've switched yet to next gen.

If Sony is still selling more than Microsoft, by the end of 2014, good for them. But, i think both consoles are good and people will buy the system they prefer. There is no wrong choice here, both consoles launched with very few issues.

You do realize this sort of data was is collected by Sony, Steam, Microsoft, and Nintendo, right? It's standard in-game data. The same type of tracking data used to display in-game stats and earn achievements in games.

I've played thru Ryse and did not witness a single QTE. There are finishing moves that you can trigger with the right trigger followed by 1-4 button sequences, but that is not a QTE it is the completion of an awesome finisher.

And the finishers are completely optional. You can play through the entire game only triggering a finisher once (tutorial level).

MS's launch was a success - it just wasn't as successful as Sony's. Further, their console seems to be suffering more hardware/OS problems. The way forward is simple: fix the problems and try their best to meet gamer's expectations. They've handicapped themselves hardware-wise, but so did Sony last gen. Sony still came back and turned their console into a great place to game (they improved online gaming, set up PS+, put forward great 1st party games, etc). If MS takes a leaf out of Sony's book from last gen, I expect they'll do pretty well.

(And for the record, I won't be getting an X1 and have already bought as PS4. Just trying to be objective)

Sony have had just as many problems if not more this gen so far with hardware. MS already have a better online experience than sony. they also have arguably better games already out and coming soon. Obviously talking about games is subjective though.

The only thing i can agree with is the os needs updating, but so does sonys. thats just fact. they both need to add the features theyve promised or are missing.

At the end of the day both companies are doing fine and really have the same general problems.

Though i dont really like to compare the 2 consoles considering they have different messages, XBO is a home entertainment unit and Sony is meant to be for "gamers"

As a gamer I don't want MS to fail either. We have to thank them for that $400 PS4. There is no way Sony would have made a console like that if the xbox360 didn't give them such competition and they were forced to worry about the next Xbox console and build the PS4 while thinking they had to give their very best. And since rumor has it that Xbox One is coming next year, I can look forward to games like Uncharted, the Order, Infamous cause I know those guys will do their best too.
Competition is good for us. And maybe if PS4 keeps on destroying the Xbox One, people waiting for a less expensive kinect-less Xbox One would have their wish comes true.

Let me break it down in terms that matter. I have both consoles, and rarely play either. Why? There are no "Next-Gen" games out. We basically just have our run of the mill launch titles and that's it. Let's see what happens when the big exclusives come out. Currently I'm waiting on PS4 version of Destiny (because it gets better service than it does on Xbox) and Halo for xbox, maybe Titanfall. Until the companies release games that matter none of this talk means much.

I'm not gonna jump on MS here because there's no doubt they've had some good sales so far, obviouslt not as good as the PS4 but still pretty good and I'm sure they're happy.

The point I do want to make though is that it's really interesting how the PR and media side of this all works. For example Microsoft aren't slow to crow about sales numbers when NPD fogures come in and show them as the top selling console in the US, in the case of the 360 and incidentally Sony wouldn't mention their sales numbers at all.

Or when MS would gladly tell us how many hours people had racked up on Netflix via 360 until Sony were able to claim that the PS3 was the most used device for Netflix in the US.

Now we have Sony touting their sales numbers with them being favourable and MS touting stats that your average fan probably doesn't care for too much (then again your average fan probably doesn't care about sales figures either to be fair).

Like I said none of this is a big up to one side or a criticism of the other (or criticism of any for that matter). I just find it interesting how the PR/Media machine in the companies work with this stuff.
