Having watched my friends play and over analyze the timing of their button presses and even worked on a couple of fighting games as a tester, I’ve grown tired of major fighting games.
I wanted to try something where a down forward punch doesn’t always mean the game will yell “Hadouken” in acknowledgment.
Enter Vanguard Princess, billed as a two-on-two fighting game developed by former Capcom sprite designer Tomoaki “Suge9″ Sugeno. The game itself consists of an all-girl cast of 10 major characters and four to five assist characters. (Not counting the DLC characters.) Each major character has their own quirks, and there’s a pretty unique approach to some of them regarding fighting styles
It seems that anime and fighting games always seem to find themselves in a symbiotic relationship. On one hand you have anime girls in skimpy clothing and on the other you have these girls go up against each other in a battle to the end. This formula has worked for several fighting franchises and even lead to some of those franchises being staples of the fighting community. While Vanguard Princess is certainly a very capable 2D fighting game, there just isn’t enough to set this apart and make it the new fighting game du jour.
You can pay what you want for Guilty Gear Isuka, so if you love that series, snatch this up to have it wherever you go. Vanguard Princess can be yours by beating the average of around $4, while Blade Symphony is added to the mix at $10.
