EA finds no joy in Zynga's collapse, reckons social gaming was overhyped

EA finds no joy in Zynga's collapse.

Last night Zynga canned 13 games, reduced its investment in The Ville, closed Zynga Boston, triggered huge layoffs at Zynga Austin and proposed the closure of Zynga Japan and UK.

The news sent shockwaves rippling throughout the game industry, and means about five per cent of Zynga's total work force will be let go.

"reckons social gaming was overhyped" nawwwwwww you think............

Pachter has been praising the shit out of Zynga over the last two years, saying that Zynga knows how to do things right......I guess this shows just how much Pachter really knows.

I hope this sends a signal to the gaming industry that browser, phone, tablet games are not everything they are making them out to be. I hate it when I hear "The gaming industry is shifting toward..." casual mobile/browser games. Let's be real, Angry Birds is a phenomenon, and just because it is successful, it doesn't mean that that's where gaming is heading. Just because millions play Facebook games, it shouldn't dictate the future of the industry. At the end of the day, most of those people will fade away, while core PC, console and dedicated handheld gamers will still be buying. I don't like people losing their jobs, but over speculation of casual trends is the reason stuff like this happens. Publishers need to invest more in their bread and butter (gamers like us), and not so much in fads.

Peter Moore would make a great Bond villain. He looks so weird.

Honestly, he's full of it most of the time.

Free to play without value = no sell. I am not buying chickens, goats, and extra plots on my farm damn you Zynga. Just make it into a real game and sell it for $20 bucks with no microtransactions. People might actually like it if ya did that.

The good side of this is that you can buy Zynga's stock for cheap if anyone wants a percentage in the future.

I find no joy in EA.... Yeah. I went there.

Ranma11371d ago

My only problem with EA is the monopoly they have over sports games and the rights to player names and team names.

If it wasn't because of EA, we might of had a RPG sports game, or adventure or shooting type sports game. NO seriously !!!

ShaunCameron1371d ago

Blame the sports leagues that granted them exclusive rights. It's not EA's fault that the competition no longer have the NFL and NHL licenses. On the flipside, EA lost the MLB and NBA licenses.

Next commentary will be just after WiiU launch: "Consoles are not doomed, it was overreacting" >.<

next revelation: Mobile Gaming - Not the holy grail developers believed it to be, returns focus to consoles.

if I can run gaikai then Im good

bicfitness1371d ago

Focus will naturally return once all three next gen platforms are out and raking in the $. This gen has simply gotten too old for some and they gone off to dally on PC, tablets, whatever. Most consumers will return.

And a next gen CoD/ Halo/ Mario/ Drake will see to that.

EA finds joy in Zynga's collapse only because they now think that their PopCap acquisition has more time to shine.
