I'm sorry but Halo is in a completely different league to Black Ops. There is no comparison.
The story is part of an extremely in depth and engaging fiction and isn't an afterthought which the current COD series, especially the original Black Ops.
It is far more original not only it's narrative but also every other area like weapons, levels, game modes, an AI that actually exists, vehicles and freedom.
Most important of all though; it's gameplay is unique to this day and the formula hasn't gotten stale, which is more than can be said for the much reused Call of Duty series.
I will be playing Halo for sure and skipping Black Ops, but CoD has other qualities! I personally don't find it stale, but I don't play it day-in day-out for all these years.
My philosophy, if you don't like it, don't play it. It's not like some kind of huge investment.
I'm sorry, but Halo has gotten a little stale recently. At least Halo Reach did. Halo CE was, and still is, in my opinion, the best game ever made. I enjoyed all the other Halo games even though they were massive let downs compared to Halo CE. Even when people said ODST was more of the same, I disagreed, I still enjoyed it. But Halo Reach: nah. I enjoyed it, and it is definitely a AAA game, but just felt like an extention of ODST, which was in itself an extention of Halo 3, which was what Halo 2 should have been. I hated to admit it to myself, but it became "stale".
But, I WILL be getting Halo 4 and not Blops 2. The Cod series is just as repetitve, the only difference is COD has a better gameplay formulae then Halo (at least online), but with Halo 4 I know I'm gona have an engaging story, interesting environments, new weapons (and I mean new weapons, not new gun models) e.t.c. Maybe it's just me: I'll pick sci-fi over modern combat anyday. As for online (don't like Halo online anymore) why buy Blops 2 when I already have Modern Warfare 2?
I'm looking to Halo 4 whether it's new or more of the same :)
If Halo was multiplatform it would blow COD sales away, it's overall the better experience.
Halo is the better game hands down, it offers one of the best multiplayer experiences on console. The only game which i could see giving it some competition is the next Bungie game. Before people say we have no idea what the game is, it's Bungie, they made Halo and made the multiplayer what it is today and they will obviously want to top that experience with this new IP.
The multiplat sales are misleading, but what's really interesting with these two is the similar territory they're occupying. Black Ops is angled more at future tech than any of its predecessors bringing it more in line with Halo's combat. It'll be interesting to see what happens. I'm more interested in Halo 4 right now, but Black Ops is making some really interesting changes.
I plan on getting both games. The difference is I'll be getting halo at launch but will wait a month or two for black ops... because I'll be too busy playin halo
I'm sorry, but COD4's futuristic remake shouldn't even be named in the same line with the word "great". I can't believe people still want to play those underdeveloped annual games.
i dont give a shit about either of them. I will be too busy playing fresh innovative FPS games like borderlands 2, farcry 3, bioshock infinite, and dishonored.

You put that perfectly. There is little that can honestly be compared to a main instalment in the Halo franchise.

Halo's great, though.
