Ratchet and Clank takes up 22GB, runs at 60FPS, support 720P and 1080i

Set to run at 60 fps, the title will support both 720p and 1080i. For all you Resistance fans, they promise that all of their upcoming PS3 titles will support 60 fps (and that means Resistance 2 as well). Back to Ratchet and Clank, the title will take up a whopping 22 GB of a 25 GB Blu-ray disc. Even without the localizations, the title couldn't fit on a DVD9.

In the case of the quality of a videogame disc size does not matter if you think about. The problem with Sony is that they boasts about how much
more powerful the PS3 is over the 360. Instead of comparing BD and DVD9, Sony should be worried about MS position in the marketplace. They are allowing MS to overtake their business. With the 360 attachment rate at 6games/system developers would be crazy to overlook it. For developers, more money is made by releasing a game on the 360 at least now anyway.

But to me, the fact that you have multiple sections available on maps depending of the game type, ie: DM, CF, ZONES makes me feel like there is more than 5 maps available. Plus, you have to admit that the quality of those maps are great. Can Sony catch a break? Resistance: Fall of man, touted as a game that required the Blu-ray disc because of the enormous size of the game, is under fire as to the legitimacy of the actual size of game data on the disc. squatingyeti over at the Neogaf.com forum posted a Linux dump of the Blu-ray disc and it appears to have several gigs of padding data. Padding data is usually quite normal, usually used to push game data to the outer edges of the disc for quicker access. What makes this interesting is that Sony stated that Resistance required the space only available on the Blu-ray disc as a testament to the quality of the game. If you remove the padding files you end up with a game that could fit on a normal DVD. It is also worth noting that padding files are not needed for the blu-ray technology because blu-ray has the capacity to scan the entire disc. So, if this is true then why would Sony claim the game required 22gigs of disc space? Oh wait, you do the math.

The point of blu-ray is to give flexiblity and potential to put better content in the game. alot of you fanboys like your self quickly bring up the point that more space = longer gameplay. In some cases yes i.e. games like unreal tournament having all the maps on one disc. But im quite sure developers are more concerned about making a game LOOK better.

Lets just say I can see all future ps3 games having uncompressed sound, uncompressed textures and more memory to add cinametics. All this adds to the woooo factor of the game itself. Im pretty sure square is working hard to put tons of cgi movies into their next final fantasy. It just adds to the package of the game.

The game maybe still 40-60 hours gameplay but im pretty sure the graphics and sound , and cgi will be much improved due to a massive capacity. Yes ive heard the argument that you can put multiple discs for one game, but lets say you have alot of textures and hi quality recorded sound on one disc, its going to take alot of memory hence you have to create redundant data on another disc.

Further more games like ut 3, lets say they have 30 maps, and hypothetically they take alot of memory each, can you picture yourself changing discs when the server changes maps for the next map , esp when ppl select random maps.

When you compress you remove certain bits of information that is spaced out in a way that the human mind can for the most part ignore, or form the full picture on it's own. In other words when you compress you are killing the detail of your product. What is the point of having an HD TV? Roof, I wouldn't go as far as to say BD is already being pushed to its limits. This game is on a single layer BD disk, the developers still have a whole other layer to add on for a whopping 50gig worth of information. And when/if the developers ever get so far as to start filling up a 50gig BD, the PS3 reader is fully capable of reading a 3 layer disk (that would be 75gig of total usable disk space). It is only into the 4+ layer BD disks will the need for a hardware update be required.

This is not the first game I have heard requiring a BD disk which is currently in development. I seem to remember that Killzone 2 will require a BD as each level is reported to use up 2 gig of space. Unfortunatly I can not find where I saw that at or I would post a link...maybe one of you readers know of the article I speak of and will post it for me. Xbox is quickly showing its age with the DVD player and Sony has caught a ton of flack from "forcing" a BD reader down everyones throat. How quickly they forget this is a next gen console designed to lead us into the high def era.

When I pre-ordered it at my gamestop i got a demo! The demo is so sick like after you kill so man ythings with a gun it gets lvl upgraded and stronger cooler looking all that good stuff! You start out with 4 guns and wow there all amaizng. My oersonal favorite is a gun that turns enemys into panquins lmao. I've loved this series ever since the first Ratchet & Clank on the PS2. I'm curious to see what major improvements they've added that would make a game swell to 22gb, seeing that all the previous games were tons of fun despite fitting handily on a dvd. I hope it's not another game with just 4gb of actual substance and 18 gb of unnecessary junk. I'm not at all sold on the whole "blu-ray is necessary for gaming" hype, and no game that's come out on the PS3 has demonstrated this to be true. But I'll keep my mind open to see if this is the game that finally does it.

Of all the PS3 games I want to get over the next few months(most of which I won't be able to afford due to the shear expense of all these games), this is the one game that I will definitely get this year, be it the only game I get for the PS3 this year(I actually do have one game for the PS3 that is not a download: that is Sonic the Hedgehog, but I won't count that atrocity as a game). I don't care if I don't get to buy Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword or Uncharted, as long as I have this game I'm happy.

These guys rule. They are totally committed to making great games and I haven't been disappointed by them yet. They take the time to learn the hardware and make their own engines specifically for their games. Their first attempt on the PS3 is indeed a AAA title despite what some may say, and ToD looks to be following the same path to greatness. You can never really tell until you play the game, but I have no reason to suspect anything less than an awesome experience. Way to go Insomniac!

The problem however is that compressing and decompressing files takes a LOT of CPU power and bandwidth, which can eat into resources needed to run the actual game. The PS3 has more than enough power and bandwidth to handle standard compression techniques used in current-gen titles, but the 360 tends to dedicate 1/3 of its CPU to decompression of data off the disc. This was documented at an actual Developers Conference held by Microsoft, and portrayed in a positive manner. Instead of splitting decompression across all 3 cores in Xenon, they recommended dedicating an entire core to this process in order to allow the developer(s) to apply the secondary layer of compression in order to store more data on the disc.

The fact that 360 titles have to work twice as hard to utilize just 1/5th the space PS3 titles have available to them is a bit of a problem.

That's the first thing getting compressed when devs ran out of space on a media! Kids are used to listen to MP3 in stereo, so that's where devs will cut first. Then graphics, then extra maps, extra cars, extra etc... There's tons of stuff you can cut or compress and the game will still be ok, but why???? We no longer play games with the same three notes playing endlessly in the background!!! Today's games even go as far as using philarmonic orchestra. And then what, compress the sound as much as you can in Org Vorbis, make it stereo instead of 5.1 and only use the same tune over and over until you whistle it while you're sleeping???? It's 2007 and they have the space. Let the devs use the space while they can because yes, eventually, they will likely have to compress stuff, even on blu-ray. Every game I have played on the PS3 so far sounds better and graphically looks better that any game I have on my 360 so I know you do not have PS3. There are only like 3 exceptions and one is Splinter cell on the PS3 because it was a bad port. But look at Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Motorstorm, Virtual Fighter, Oblivian, Ninja Gaiden Sigma. the Only two games on the 360 that look great next to a PS3 game is Bioshock and Gears of War.

So Oblivion has 13 hours of music? Even at MP3 compression level, in plain stereo, that's almost one gig! About 10% of the whole DVD and you still only get stereo music. 10,000 sound clips... Well those can easily be compressed as well, and spatial distribution can be used to send them to all your speakers, but again even with high compression (your wolf may ending up sounding like a cat here!) you still use a decent % of a dvd. Compromises, compromises, compromises... Do you want to add voices now??? It was one of the worst comment about Oblivion... They used the like of Patrick Stewart (what a voice), but then compress it, and use the same comments over, and over, like they do in most games. Still another good chunk of the dvd being used, and we are only talking about stuff coming out of your speakers! Uncompress all that stuff, use more comments as they should have used originally, and you quickly fill a dvd and you don't even have a game yet, just voice, music, and sound clips... I'll take the extra space anytime!

They always have more disc space to play around on is why so even a crappy PC system will look better than a Console game due to the available harddrive space. 25 gigs on the standard Bu-Ray. %0 gigs on a dual layer which Metal Gear may be the first game to use a 50 gig disc. The PS3 is a PC system for the poor man plus Blu-Ray player. A PC rig will run you around $2000 to $5000. The PS3 is $499.99 - $599.00. It's great that Blu-Ray has 50 GB. But we haven't seen a difference in terms of content. So far, the only problem for 2 games on the 360 is that Mistwalker loves video. HD video takes up huge space.

Halo 3 fits on 1 DVD and has 4 player co-op, saved videos, and forge.

They will only keep coming up with more ways to show people this, for instance Stranglhold collectors edition ($69.99) on the PS3 has a complete movie on the same disc as the game and Heavenly Sword Contain a lot of unlockable content(videos pictures,ect) They did the same this with the PS3 version of the Darkness. You get more for your money when you buy a PS3 game in some cases but it will only get better over time with the amount of content.

gnothe1 - I understand what you are asking, but look at it this way, until now, the developers had to fill a standard DVD with content, and since every DVD has the same storage capacity, why say "our game uses 3.4gig of space, and our game uses 6.9gig of space", you are right that it would not make sense. However, now we give the publisher all this space, why not blow you trumpet saying our sound is uncompressed because we can do that and it takes up 10gig of space. I guess you could look at it this way...a standard music file, un-compressed will take up between 12 to 20meg, but compress that with mp3, and it is squeesed down to 3 to 5 meg. Does it sound any different...no, or very minimul difference. Now when you rip your CD's to your computer, do you rip them at 64bit, 128bit, or 256bit? Can your ears tell the difference? So why not let the producers of the game give us un-compressed audio, and uncompressed video?

Why do the makers of GOW keep touting that it uses the UT engine? What do I care, it is just another gaming engine. It is just something the producers of these games do to help bring our, the buyers, attention to the game.

In podcast Insomniac made clear that this is not final size of the game.
22GB is before final compression and some duplicate file removal.

The BD will contain all supported markets languages and special mapping and animations for Japan(Ratchet looks a bit different in Japan). Only "1" and the same disk for worldwide distribution.

Not unless you think it is going to make the length of the game last longer, and if you do, than you have a lot to learn about the process of making a video game. It makes for 270% more "CONTENT". In other words you get higher quality sound, more assets, etc. Considering how developers have so much more space to play with they haven't had to resort to compressing every little piece of their product, keeping the quality high. So a short game can look better than it would on a DVD9 fully compressed. Not to mention having to uncompress on the fly takes up a lot of resources. When developers actually take advantage of the space and compression... well you can imagine how that will go for yourself.

Having more space is an advantage to be honest, nothing wrong with that but I don't think that DVD9 will just go away, its here to stay for this generation. As for Resistance, that was around 23GB until they took some of the crap away to make it 15GB. The crap they took away was some of the languages as the PS3 is region free remember.

Now Halo 3 contains 6 hours of music, I think its 7,600 pieces of sounds just for footsteps lol. Mad huh?

What I do think, is that for the next generation we should start using Holographic discs haha. :D they hold up to 3TB or something. Damn I hope the next gen consoles feature at least 1GB of ram.

There was some tearing in that demo, but a post by one of the devs (on NeoGaf) a couple weeks ago confirmed that it was a much earlier build, actually one of the last few show demos. He said that the sync/tearing had already been fixed a while ago.

From what i remember months ago many sonyfanboys(not all fanboys here) were saying the 360 can only do 720p and 1080i and that the ps3 games will all be in 1080p. Last i checked warhawk is 1080i, heavenly sword is 720p, two really excellent games. basically the ps3s top games and rightfully so. They are excellent games(lair is 1080p however).

Bluray does seem like the natural progression to DVD and hddvd as well(though i am still wondering how mass effect is supposedly on one disk, good or bad though it will probably be great). Both hold a great amount of data and there is a supposed 50 gig hddvd disk coming. As for gaming mediums these are great(we could go forever on the movie debate basically being features(hddvd) vs more content(bluray).

Aside from that they are formats for petes sake that get the job done. From the sounds of it it sounds like if there was a better format to come out you guys would reject it in a nano second.

Someone from Insomniac said in an interview, AFAIR, they got 4x the performance of Resistance out of the engine which now powers R&C. Thus, the 60fps and the 1080 resolution, I'd guess. Seemed not enough to push 1080p, though (but a 1080 - if that is really native - even in "i" with the Resistance detail level is still amazing).
So if they keep pushing, maybe Resistance 2 will hit the 1080p/60 ?
My TFT runs 1080i anyway now. It is much sharper then my previous 1080p on that el cheapo. And I can't really see the diff (i vs. p I mean).

R and C is absolutely a fantastic franchise.Platforming, great weapons, great story, beautiful graphics. It is a cartoon game, with the best 'Acme" weapons you will ever find. All 360 games "support" 1080p. However, that's with upscaling. PGR3 ran at 60FPS, but had a resolution of 600p. It was upscaled to 720p (or 1080i/1080p).

I find it suspicious that they used the word "support" instead of "native".

Sony fans push blu ray when it hasn't really changed gaming for the better yet. About a month and a half ago lair was supposed to be the game that was supposed to push blu- ray, what did we get? Heavenly Sword, great game, but with the power of blu ray you get 8- 15 hours of game play, Come on. It also gets old, this "but your system has to have this game on 10 discs" So!!!!! granted, Xbox 360 fans would love to have this option, but does it really take the fun factor away from a game? Last time I checked,(based on VGcharts sales) 5 of the top 10 games last week were 360 titles.

Now Lair, Warhawk, Madden 08, have all been out for about a month and the best either or those can do is 19th!?

Bioshock has been out for about the same amount of time, and it sold more than all three of those titles COMBINED.

I will give credit to HS though, at least it made it in to the top 5.

All I can say is that this game has hit my "must have list". It is definitely going to be fun and exciting if the entire game is anything like the demo I played. The demo was short but it sure had me hooked. My son had me play through it twice. He thought I was letting him watch a cartoon and he could not keep his eyes off it. If you've played the demo, you know that the CELL processor was DEFINITELY utilized in the making of this title.

There as SO MANY things happening around you all at once. I honestly think that's what Sony wants developers to do. They want an immersive gaming experience that can't be seen anywhere else. R&C might be the first title to do so. Heavenly Sword's scale was AMAZING! This might outdo it though.
