X-Play Exclusive: GTA IV Console Battle

Adam Sessler gets some time with Newsweek's N'Gai Croal and Kotaku's Brian Crecente as they discuss Grand Theft Auto IV and what it means to the 360/PS3 console war.

TUFFnNYC5843d ago

Wow never been first here. Anyway, so what do we get from this? Nothing. They know as much as we know already. However, imo DLC will not be a significant boost in terms of exclusive sales. They arent releasing exactly what the DLC entails and its coming out months later. People lose interest in it. At that time we will have other games to play. 360 will have Gears 2 and PS3 will have R2 and Killzone2. Feel me?

ion6665843d ago

theres gonna be so much other stuff to do i predict xbox 360 will be obsolete in feb.09.this and metal gear life is good

.....life could be simple.

sonarus5843d ago

Precisely. How they plan to use unknown DLC as a selling point makes me wonder. This is the primary reason why i think DLC will be lame or there is some kind of strings attached. If you got the DLC deal to get more ppl to play GTA on your system, then why not tell us what it is so we can make that choice. You can't advertise DLC and have someone say oh what is it...oh we can't tell you but its coming.

Proxy5843d ago (Edited 5843d ago )

Microsoft paid a lot for that content, and they either had no idea what they were paying for, or they knew what it would be; I'm guessing they knew what they were spending their money on.

But, if MS does know what the new exclusive content will be, now is the time to tell us, when the big sales numbers will be made. Yet, they haven't told us what the DLC will be, and I have my own suspicion as to why; you can form your own opinion.

In the end though, you can't go wrong with either version. Two thumbs up R*!

Below: Actually, when I heard about MGS4, I had a pretty good idea what it was going to be like. I had my suspicions when I first heard about GTA IV; you never know with these kinda things, and I thought GTA IV might end up being a remake of Frogger. Serious: You at least know the general idea of the game, a new FPS, a new RPG, etc. We know nothing about this DLC as far as I know. It could be anything from a few extra missions, to a whole other city.

KingME5843d ago

You can to do that, and that is exactly what is done everytime a new IP or a sequel is announced. When you were told MSG4 was coming out or even GTA IV. You had absolutely no ideal what the game as going to be like or what content would be added.

It's just a matter of perspective.

Angelitos5843d ago

There is no question on which is better.

PS3 Version

Better AA, Less frame drops, Less pop-ups, graphics look more realstic, and sixaxis support.

PS3 online is Free
PS3 will also be getting exclusive DLC
PS3 wil have the trophy system

The 360, will only be having a different exclusive DLC, that I'm definetly not paying for.

Ureval5843d ago (Edited 5843d ago )

Dude, seriously. Theyve already said, in almost every corner, that the differences between the two are negligable. The only reason the PS3 may play SLIGHTLY better, is because of the harddrive install, but I would hardly call it (as you so overexaggeratingly put it) "superior". Your comment reeks of ignorant fanboyism. Give me Xbox's online and DLC anyday.

Since this is the gamerzone Ill refrain from personal insults, but you better believe they would have been very very mean.

Edit: If youre a Sonytroll and you know it, disagree.

sonarus5843d ago (Edited 5843d ago )

lol if you are a sony troll and you know it stomp your feet....

DLC for 360 is great and all but i honestly can't use that to base my decision for purchasing until i know what it is. Extra missions are great but if GTA4 is really as good as they say it is, i would probably be better off just restarting the game than paying for some extra missions

Ureval5843d ago

IGN just did a really good podcast about GTA, and talked about what the DLC might be. Its pure speculation but one of the guys brought up a really intriguing possibility. He suggested Rockstar focus their efforts on creating the next GTA for what console generation comes out next, and any future current console efforts be based off of the GTA4 game. IE, instead of future DLC just being new gametypes, why not create completely new cities, and distribute them similar to the same way Tomb Raider Anniversary was distributed as an expansion of Legend.

Future DLC could be completely new cities and storylines, as a best case scenario. Theres no way of telling for sure, but THAT would be enough reason to own the 360. Hell, if I had the PS3 version and the DLC was impressive enough, who know? we might see a bunch of people trading in their PS3 version just to be able to get the 360 DLC.

justgamez5843d ago

be reasonable. Whole cites for 50 million dollars? First it's 2 DLCs for 10 hours of additional gameplay each and now it's whole cities. WOW!

sonarus5843d ago (Edited 5843d ago )

Yes but rockstar said it was extra missions that would expand on the adventures in the GTA4 world. While it is a good idea, you have to think about it this way. Making a new city is like making a new game, you have to think of data size...While its an interesting concept, last time i checked MSoft still had a file size limit on DLC.

Rockstar should really be the ones hyping it but they have dropped so many clues that it is extra missions but people just want to keep speculating about whole new cities. I actually think the DLC will be decent but not that great because if it was, MSoft would have announced it since they have been talking about it so much.

I simply cannot base my GTA4 purchase base on unknown missions. If you are expecting whole new cities you will be greatly dissapointed

was that dood from Kotaku also the jiggalo guy in Duece Bigalow Male Jiggalo? :P

some good points. but nothing i havent already read or heard.

TheExecutive5843d ago

I cannot believe, and i have said this multiple times, that people still believe that the 50 million dollars went straight for DLC.

here is my scenario:

R* went to Sony and explained that they need a money comittment from Sony to keep it exclusive to Sony. Sony offered them a number. MS just came up with a much bigger number and they demanded some DLC for it. The 50 million was used primarily to take exclusivity away from Sony. There is no way MS is dumb enough to give 50 million for some DLC 6 months after the release of the game.

empathe5843d ago

Except for the fact that the engine was built on the 360 and the 50 million happened during development of GTA4, not before.

Proxy5843d ago (Edited 5843d ago )

I think if MS had a trick up their sleeve worth 50 million they would come out and impress a little more. I would expect "Do you want 2 whole new cities and more cars and weapons to play with? Buy the 360 version! Updating coming this fall!" Instead were getting, "Buy 360 version, we have 'something' coming, 'sometime' in the future."

360 fans boast of undefined DLC. PS3 fans boast of insignificant graphical differences. Make your choice; and remember, there is no wrong choice when it comes to GTA IV.

rawd5843d ago (Edited 5843d ago )

Let me take a WILD guess and vote that Sessler says GTA4 is superior on Xbox360. He's so far up Microsofts hoop, he doesn't know how to find his way out.

and PS. you know he wanks to Morgan's pics every night.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies2d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken2d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing692d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker2d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing692d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt2d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken2d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Grand Theft Auto 4 is an important game for Rockstar, not least because it was the first title in the franchise to use the newly created RAGE engine.
