Microsoft And Machinima Have Officially Commented On XB1M13

iGR: "As of now, you're likely aware that we broke news over the weekend of a new promotion to promote Xbox One on Youtube's Machinima channel. At first, we thought it was business as usual, but later details proved that the dealings were somewhat covert in nature.

When we reached out to Microsoft for further clarification on the matter, we were given a joint statement from Microsoft and Machinima,"

It's not a "typical marketing partnership" when you hide the fact that you pay to people to say neutral or good things about your console. They are acting like they didn't know what Machinima was doing? Yeah right, Machinima probably got a good chunk of $$$ to take the blame.

"confidentiality relates to the agreements themselves, not the existence of the promotion"
Sure, whatever sounds better

NewMonday3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

they mean typical for them..

MS: yes we've been doing this a while, so what?

dedicatedtogamers3764d ago

Yep.

This is a normal response for Microsoft.

"We got caught. Watch my left hand as I make...this...disappear! Poof! Controversy gone, please?"

Maybe this is what Major Nelson meant when he wanted the internet hate to go away (because we'll pay you a few shekels to make the hate go away...)

guitarded773764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

It's out in the open now, but did any of us really think this stuff wasn't going on in the background?

I'm also sure they have plants online that go to the defense of their respective product in comment sections on forums just like this. I see comments from some that there is no other explanation for.

The funny thing is those who said this crap was going on were labeled conspiracy theorists or paranoid.

Go look at some major sites, and see how they are not critical of some, but very critical of others. They are paid, paid, paid.

dedicatedtogamers3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

The unfortunate thing for genuine Xbox One fans is that this is going to turn people against you (not that Xbox One fans get a lot of love on the internet anyway...)

This bribing, combined with Microsoft's confirmed forum-astroturfing during and after the X1 reveal, just makes everyone else suspect of people who are pro-X1. Whether it's right or not, whenever someone seems to be a bit TOO pro-Microsoft, it is naturally going to bring up the thought "are they paid"?

Instead of saying "Sony Too™" or "What's the big deal?", Xbox fans should be even MORE outraged since this is going to turn the gaming community against any Let's Play-ers or commenter or...anyone who says positive things about X1.

Death3764d ago

How is it no one took issue when Sony passed out PS4 consoles and other swag to journalists at their New York event prior to the PS4's launch? Some of you think the possibility at getting $3 is worth more than a $400 console not to mention the other stuff journalists walked away with.

Charybdis3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

Typical as they see it as standard practice.
"The Xbox team does not review any specific content or provide feedback on content."
-So guess this is done by Machinima

"Any confidentiality provisions, terms or other guidelines are standard documents provided by Machinima." -Machinima should make these standard documents public

"For clarity, confidentiality relates to the agreements themselves, not the existence of the promotion"
-make it clear its advertised promotion, especially for people who might not recognise its advertisement purposes

xHeavYx3764d ago

@Death
You forgot to add Sony Too™
There is a difference between giving away consoles and forcing a contract that says "you can't talk negatively about our console/games"
You'll understand once you take your blinds off

bryam19823764d ago

poor Microsoft :-( things are really that bad that you have to pay for people to say they like xbone thats sad

Kayant3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

@Death

"How is it no one took issue when Sony passed out PS4 consoles and other swag to journalists at their New York event prior to the PS4's launch?" ---> Am pretty sure that was public knowledge -> http://www.lazygamer.net/24...

And also * Pre-release product issued to IGN by Sony for review* - ScottLowe.

Not to add that IGN said negative stuff about it in their review ---> http://uk.ign.com/articles/...

Difference here is this is supposed to be completely hidden from the public so no it's no way near the same thing.

"Honestly, how many people are out there selling their integrity for a shot at $3?" ---> You would be surprised ---> http://neogaf.com/forum/sho...

Death3764d ago

@xHeavy,
Safe to say you were never a journalist or reviewer. You obviously have no idea how the system works. If you are objective about a product it's extremely difficult ot lose support from a publisher or manufacturer. Contrary to what many believe, they aren't trying to buy positive reviews. If you do decide to go off the deep end, that support gets yanked very quickly. With that said, if you are one of the new gen of "journalists" walking away with a substatial amount of product, how likely are you to lean towards a positive review?

Compare that to the $3 per thousand view Machinima offer that capped at $3750 total. The restriction according to the email is the review had to be positive or neutral. Why would Microsoft pay someone to bash their product? How many negative reports are out there? You really are making an issue of a non-issue.

Honestly, how many people are out there selling their integrity for a shot at $3?

TheGreatAndPowerful3764d ago

"Watch my left hand as I make...this...disappear! Poof!"

lolol

DragonKnight3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

@Death: Did you seriously ask how it's different?

I'll explain how it's different. One: That event was by invite only, not every journalist was invited. Two: Sony didn't hand out consoles for review to these journalists before this event, and plenty of them were b*tching about that very fact. Three: Once given the console for review, the journalists were free to review it as they wished, wherever they wished, and were NOT made to sign a contract.

What's happening with the MS stealth marketing is that MS were paying youtubers to say positive or neutral things about the Xbox One for money. And not only were they doing that, which shows fear in that their product must not be able to sell on its own merits, but they included an NDA in the contract agreement which is ILLEGAL per FTC regulations.

That's how it's different.

Death 2: They aren't trying to buy positive reviews? That's exactly what they did do. They paid people to say neutral or positive things about the Xbox One. How is that not actually paying for people to say good things about the Xbox One?

Here's my question to you. Why did Microsoft have to launch this stealth marketing campaign at all?

@Jokes: No way, you're sticking up for Microsoft? Wow, that's totally not at all expected and normal for you regardless of how illegal the move Microsoft makes is.

JokesOnYou3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

lol its youtube paid or not it's advertising, at the end of the day nobody is harmed here. This is not a independent journalist being paid to make inaccurate statements or give a professional positive paid review. If you see a pro xbox vid on youtube and it influences your purchase it's no different then a ad on tv that influences your purchase....smart consumers always research multiple sources for any costly electronics purchase, stupid consumers make kneejerk buying decisions because some guy on youtube, on a forum, on a blogg or some commercial said it was the best thing since sliced bread.

I do think micro should make it public that the youtube marketing is paid in this case for full diclosure/ to be completely transparent but again its not a nefarious illegal trick. I work in a company where I know our sales dept pay actual customers who gave positive feedback to write a favorable review. Its not like the company is paying them to say something they dont believe or tell them what to say...they simply are paying them to actually write their opinion so the company can use it to generate more interest/sales ads for its products. This is a business so I say Micro should continue paying anybody who WANTS to advertise for them for money, its always been perfectly legal to do so. If you happen to buy anything ONLY because a guy on youtube channel said it's great then its on you.

Jokesonyou Apologist Lvl999999999

LOL. Are you that desperate? No. What your company doing is not "ok" either. They are not happening to just somehow give money to people who gave positive review. They are creating incentive cash payout for positive review. People would be reviewing would now purposely be reviewing positive for money. it is called bribe. Your company would be just cleverly blurring the line.

There was an idiot who said that he was going to pick that contractor anyways. He just happen to receive bribe as bonus. LOLOL.

You guys are usually a breath of fresh air on this site; providing opposing views to the majority. But you're losing a lot of credibility by sticking up for MS with this.

@JokesOnYou

"its youtube paid or not it's advertising" lol Always taking the Microsoft apologist stand, do they pay you, too?

Here's what the agreement states:

http://pastebin.com/vec6vjv...

"You may not say anything negative or disparaging about Machinima, Xbox One or any of its Games in your Campaign Video"

"You agree to keep confidential at all times all matters relating to this Agreement, including, without limitation, the Promotional Requirements, and the CPM Compensation, listed above."

It's not going to clearly be advertising because of that confidentiality part. Anybody including Machinima could of signed this contract, make a 30 second review of a game with zero negatives and you wouldn't know it was because of this contract.

...Since they can't say nothing negative, reviews will be extremely biased that you could end up buying an Xbox One game with many flaws and you can't blame Microsoft because you wouldn't know it was them that made the reviewers hide them.

It's business but it's shady business which further proves that Polygon might have been paid to be biased against Sony a long time ago with that $750,000 advertisement deal. Dishonesty isn't going to get people to buy their product once the bullshit gets exposed.

UltraNova3763d ago (Edited 3763d ago )

I hate this.

I've just unsubscribed from Machinima. If want a single-sided view of things I ll go buy the official Xbox or PlayStation magazine (even them would state some negatives for a game!!) not this under the table manipulating bullshit.

Blachek3763d ago (Edited 3763d ago )

How is it that none of these Sony fanboys understand how a product endorsement works?

JokesOnYou seems to be the only person with intelligent insight.

In traditional media endorsement are used every day,

Mike Rowe puts his name next to Ford...
Betty White puts her name next to Snickers...
RG3 puts his name next to Subway...
Ron Jeremy & Jimmy Johnson endorse ExtenZe...
Lance Armstron endorsed Michelob Ultra...

Do you think that Subway is how RG3 made himself into a great athlete, or ExtenZe is what gave Ron Jeremy the distance in his glamorous career? They were paid to say something positive about a product, and put their name to it.

I work for a company where I get my on-air radio personalities extra money to endorse local businesses. This happens everyday, and is accepted.

People listen to those they can associate with, and when somebody puts their name to a product or service they are compensated.

Microsoft did this with popular uploaders on YouTube, this isn't out of the realm of normal.

Quit reaching, advertising is everywhere, get outside once in a while.

DonMingos3763d ago

Sometimes I wonder if some N4G members (like jokesonyou, Death, nukeitall, etc) aren't paid also by M$ as part of this strategy.

And even some sites like Polygon, Kotaku, Gametrailers...

It really makes me question that...

zaanan3763d ago

Disclaimer: I have not read TFA. That said, I have no trouble believing Microsoft was indeed unethical in this situation. Why? Because they have a storied history of bullying folks- competitors, vendors, manufacturers, and even customers in some cases. So even if they did no wrong here, their track record makes it easy to believe they did. If they are interested in erasing that negative image, they need to be completely open and transparent in everything they do. Obviously they are not, so their shady reputation continues.

Note: I am not absolving machinima, just saying Microsoft did themselves no favors by acting in a way that can easily be construed as shady.

dedicatedtogamers3763d ago

@ Blachek

Surely, for someone who works in the industry, you're aware that it is illegal to accept material compensation for your tacit endorsement and not announce that you're being endorsed, right?

Blachek3763d ago

@ Dedicatedtogamers

"Celebrity endorsers also are addressed in the revised Guides. While the 1980 Guides did not explicitly state that endorsers as well as advertisers could be liable under the FTC Act for statements they make in an endorsement, the revised Guides reflect Commission case law and clearly state that both advertisers and endorsers may be liable for false or unsubstantiated claims made in an endorsement – or for failure to disclose material connections between the advertiser and endorsers. The revised Guides also make it clear that celebrities have a duty to disclose their relationships with advertisers when making endorsements outside the context of traditional ads, such as on talk shows or in social media.

The Guides are administrative interpretations of the law intended to help advertisers comply with the Federal Trade Commission Act; they are not binding law themselves. In any law enforcement action challenging the allegedly deceptive use of testimonials or endorsements, the Commission would have the burden of proving that the challenged conduct violates the FTC Act."

^ ftc dot gov

I'm not saying that Microsoft did is praise worthy, but having not watched the videos in question and reading only the article itself with the comments, I can see that there is a strong bias against the act itself.

you realise Sony has a history of astroturfing (it's what this MS/Machinima is all about) from everything from their playstation devision (PSP on youtube with that awful "all i want for xmas is a psp) their movie divisions, their tv divisions, their phones divisions... practically every divison they have they've done some of sort of astroturfing.

hell just google astroturfing and you'll find a long list of companies who've engaged in similar practices to MS/Machinima

as House always said Everybody Lies

DragonKnight3764d ago

Don't forget you have to add SonyToo™

scott1823763d ago (Edited 3763d ago )

^^
Making a viral advertisement with someone singing about a psp for christmas is not the same thing as paying reviewers to play their games and post "positive or neutral comments"

The viral ad for the PSP was not a review of a product! Microsoft paid people to have certain opinions of a product.

Not the same thing at all.

Kryptix3763d ago

@jackanderson

Right, since everyone does it, let Microsoft have a pass.

Sounds the same as, "since the NSA already spies through your smartphone and webcam, let Microsoft have a pass with the Kinect."

lol You Xbots never change.

Of course corporations and companies have been astroturfing since forever but this Machinima thing opens the doors for everyone to participate and then only have positive opinions to say for the love of money. Microsoft exactly knows that greed and money controls the masses so how about throwing some money to feed the sheep. It's an intelligent move but one that I'm against since this could be the beginning of corporations buying out pretty much everybody to falsely review their hardware and software.

Stop being blind for once and know how this can effect the future. Now we have to careful to who's being honest and who's not.

H0RSE3763d ago

I put more blame on those who participated, not MS. Going with what is stated above about the agreement:

"You may not say anything negative or disparaging about Machinima, Xbox One or any of its Games in your Campaign Video."

"You agree to keep confidential at all times all matters relating to this Agreement, including, without limitation, the Promotional Requirements, and the CPM Compensation, listed above."

- Seeing the obvious shady nature of these terms, if a person where to read them and still agree to them, who is really at fault here? It's like rigging a boxing match. People approach the fighter with a plan, and tell him he will make a lot of money if he throws the fight. He agrees, but gets caught, the difference being that in this case, the boxer is the one in the spotlight taking all the blame, not the people who set the whole thing up.

Right, some company's sway us with free games, support, and the most powerful hardware at the cheapest price,. While others would like to use that time and money, promoting deceptive practices.

TheoreticalParticle3764d ago

You're getting disagrees because, no, not all companies do this.

All companies DO "get their hands dirty" with questionable advertisement.

However, I've yet to see Nintendo, Sony, or even freaking EA pay a content delivery network to pay their users to stealth advertise a product for them. It's the shadiness of the particular act that's got everyone pissed off, and you're trying to sweep it under the rug, hence the disagrees.

MysticStrummer3764d ago

"I simply said all companies are dirty. Typical n4g it you don't bash Microsoft you get disagrees"

Anyone can disagree that all companies are dirty, because they aren't. Bashing MS doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it.

BG115793764d ago

Because they didn't respect the FTC rules?

Death3764d ago

Please get a clue as to how marketing works. I can't remember the last time any company paid someone to slam their product. If you hate Microsoft, $3 will not change your mind. If you hate Microsoft, $3 won't sway your opinion. Why would Microsoft pay someone like xHeavyx to bash their product? If the clause was "just mention the Xbox One for 30 seconds", anyone with an agenda could spend the time bitching about anything and Microsoft would pay them.

Lets keep avoiding the fact that both companies give out hundreds if not thousands of dollars in "free" stuff to reviewers. Those PS4's handed out in New York were hell of a lot more incentive to say nice things than $3 per 1000 hits. As a journalist, say something negative about a product and you risk losing "support" from the manufacturer or publisher. This happens daily and you guys are upset over $3?

TheGreatAndPowerful3764d ago

Yes we know that many companies do this kind of thing but it still doesn't make it right and just because some/most do it doesn't change anything. it's wrong and when you get caught you deserve all the sh*t that comes with it.

DragonKnight3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

SonyToo™

@Death: It wasn't just $3. It was $3 per 1000 views. Some of the channels that were participating in this receive millions of views.

So $3 per 1000 views and 100K views is $300. 1 million views is $3000. How many gaming journalists who do that professionally make $3000 in a month, let alone one review, hmmm?

Good-Smurf3763d ago

At least others tried to wash their hands. While Microsoft' hands stays dirty and they happy with it...until their shit hits the fan.

Baka-akaB3763d ago (Edited 3763d ago )

You get disagrees because posts like that arent usually about making it known "others do it too" . Not only is it a silly logic that can be applied to any crime ... it's a mind trick to lessen the fault and distract some of the blame and attention elsewhere .

Someone else is doing it too ? Well let us care and deal with the one actually found guilty , THEN we'll move elsewhere at the right time when needed ... not when it's convenient for the guilty party and its cheerleaders

Blaze9293763d ago (Edited 3763d ago )

I don't really see, once again, why Microsoft is taking heat for this. Lol at people calling this "illegal" - all these expert lawyers.

What's funny is that Machinima has literally been doing promotions like this for years. EA (Need for Speed Most Wanted 2012), Pax, E3, tpostmag, birchbox.

http://i.imgur.com/5JAN558....

Why is it when Microsoft steps in it's all a sudden a problem? I'm sure Microsoft paid Machinima to get their affiliates to participate in a promotion. Whatever the promotion may be.

These are Machinima's partners, their contracts, their network. Microsoft can't regulate.

If I pay you to advertise my mixtape on your network, it's up to you to decide how. All I can do is make sure the promotion actually ran and pay what I owe in the end/beginning. I can't TELL YOU how to promote it on YOUR network for members I have no control over. I mean ffs it's a MACHINIMA contract. Not Microsoft contract.

So is it not Machinima's fault for not clarifying what their partners need to do?

Or we just assume Microsoft is behind everything as always? The assumption is Microsoft paid/made Machinima take the blame? lmao - conspiracy theorist and hollywood screenwriters couldn't even come up with the tales you all spread as facts.

Like I said, there are not Microsoft's partners. They do not directly talk nor do they get paid from Microsoft. As far as Machinima partners go, they have no idea Microsoft was even involved. Machinima's partners, Machinima's promotion, Machinima's guidelines.

the logic here is as if Microsoft is the government telling you 9/11 wasn't an inside job but you all still go, NOPE! NUH UH!

I want to participate in "SONY TOO" - seems fun

http://www.foxnews.com/stor...

"LOS ANGELES - A judge approved an agreement calling for Sony Pictures Entertainment to pay $1.5 million to settle a class-action lawsuit accusing the studio of citing a fake movie critic in ads for several films, an attorney said Tuesday."

yet, the real "illegal" ones, Microsoft, will not see a day in court over this :)

ITPython3763d ago

MS better hope that their plans to sabotage PS4 sales by paying people to plant negative hardware failure "verified" reviews on Amazon doesn't come to light. Otherwise they will be up s**t creek.

Although I'm sure they gave a 'little bit' extra to those folks recently to keep them quite during this current Tubegate scandal.

But I hope one of them has the ethic backbone to stand up and speak out. MS's dirty dealings need to be exposed, and this YouTube thing is only the tip of the iceberg.

AndrewLB3763d ago (Edited 3763d ago )

The exchange of money for favorable product exposure is called Advertising. Sony does the exact same thing. The problem in this case is that Machinima had a conflict of interest because they got greedy. Microsoft has very good lawyers and if they had any idea what Machinima was up to, they would not have allowed it to go forward.

Anyone recall how Sony restricted access to only a select few friendly journalists for launch reviews, where Sony gave each of them a custom engraved PS4, some games, and probably a check to soothe any unforeseen headaches the reviewer may get if there were any problems.

5eriously3763d ago (Edited 3763d ago )

My concern is not only this issue as we all know (including the bots) how M$ are criminally inclined to mislead their consumers. I can create a long list but here is just a few coming to mind:

The machinima debacle (latest)
DRM (reveal)
Kinect onways online (reveal)
Resolution saga (Since reveal)
The cloud multiplying Xbone power (was it 8 times)
Games playing high res and framerates on PC fronted as XBone performance then games degraded on release (Forza5)
The lack of long term support for consoles starving consumers of games for their investment (360) and tranfering 360 games to XBone.
Then last but not least the RROD saga

Who can trust these giant corporate and criminal scammers any more??

On opening I said my concern is not only the Machinima saga! IS this only the TIP OF THE ICEBERG?

What else are M$ lying about?

I do not think for two picoseconds that M$ was not the main culprit was behind all this and it was Machinima's doing!

M$. thanks for making up my mind. NO M$ console, hardware or gaming will ever be bought by me and my close family in future! Thus NO eXBone for me, ever!

AnotherGamer1173763d ago

@Blachek

You have a very one sided view. All of your examples are obvious advertisements - they are on TV. Everyone knows they are being compensated. You also said a very important word - endorse. They are obvious endorsements.

In a lot of the endorsement videos (where they might be a question) have disclaimers on the TV - i.e. paid actors or spokesperson.

There are no such disclaimers on these videos. If they were on the videos then nobody could complaign. The simple fact that is seems somebody (i.e. MS and/or Machinima) tried to hide it - makes it a problem.

Actually its a big story and a bigger one if FTC and ASA get involved.....

jackanderson19853764d ago

except now they've the perfect defence as MS will say we didn't include that and never wanted it included and Machinima will say it related to confidentiality of the agreement as a whole not the promotion itself and then both the FTC and ASA will continue to do nothing because these things are never followed up on unless it's a major scandal for major money... 3750 is not major money

MysticStrummer3764d ago

A story about illegal business practices is never a non-story. From the joint statement it looks like Machinima will take the bullet unless further info comes to light.

Gh05t3764d ago

Where exactly is the "illegal" business practice?

MS paid Machinima
Machinima paid affiliates
Affiliates stated they were getting paid by machinima.

Affiliates were told not to discuss the agreement and not to state they were being paid by MS (which they were not directly).

Sounds pretty standard to me.

DragonKnight3764d ago

"Affiliates were told not to discuss the agreement and not to state they were being paid by MS (which they were not directly)."

That's where the illegal business practice is. It is a requirement that paid endorsements have full disclosure that they are paid endorsements.

MysticStrummer3764d ago

If you read the agreement, they were forbidden to disclose payment at all. That is not standard. That is illegal.

Volkama3764d ago

It is illegal according to the n4g comment lawyers, but in reality I imagine MS have dotted their i and crossed their t.

Not saying I'm on board with the paid coverage we have to decipher in an attempt to establish facts, but the gaming media is totally rife with it from all parties. Not like all these reviews are letting us know they're playing their free games on their free engraved consoles with their free merchandise before they give us those glowing review scores is it?

@Volkama - I agree with you about reviews, but it's not N4G law experts that are making this a story or, if it is how it appears to be, making it illegal. I'm sure we'll find out more about it in the coming days. MS appears to be in the clear already, since the joint statement makes it sound like Machinima was in the wrong if anyone was.

"This is such a non-story"

This is only news on N4G. It's meant to rile the anti MS fanboys so can have a reason to keep complaining about something they say they don't care for.

jonboi243764d ago

when you have main stream media reporting this like the gaurdian, huffington post, and wired uk reporting on this then its not a "non-story". when you cross the line and start breaking rules then people will notice.

MysticStrummer3764d ago

You either didn't read or didn't comprehend the story.

JasonKCK3764d ago

Maybe you should take your own advice and read it again.

Seriously, actually read it.

MysticStrummer3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

I did, along with clicking on the links to all the past information. What was going on there is illegal, either on Machinima's part, Microsoft's part, or both. From the joint statement they gave, Machinima will take the heat, but the fact remains it was illegal to forbid disclosure of a paid endorsement.

Saying it's only news on N4G is enough to disagree with you by the way.

Hicken3764d ago

"This is only news on N4G."

That's why a dozen other sites are reporting it, right?

It's simply amazing how you guys can literally reject reality for Microsoft's sake. It's both disturbing and fascinating.

GribbleGrunger3763d ago

"This is only news on N4G."

I'm going to square this one for you because I'm getting a little sick of the MasterX mentality sneaking onto this site. Are you ready?

N4G is an aggregate site and any news posted here is from OTHER SITES! In other words, it's everywhere BUT on this site until someone reads it on ANOTHER site and posts it here.

Excellent communications skills, typical marketing partnership and strategy. Used by thousands of companies.

True_Samurai3764d ago

No? that's all you have to say. No detail explanation on why you disagree? you must don't know how some companies handle marketing. Take a business class and you'll understand that this is not the first time a company has done this

DragonKnight3764d ago

"Take a business class..."

Says someone who probably doesn't take a business class.

starchild3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

Don't try to talk sense to insanely irrational Sony fanboys. All they know how to do is hate, twist facts, ignore bits of inconvenient evidence, and just generally bash anything not-Sony. They are delusional if they think that Sony doesn't do the same kinds of things.

Here is just one example:
http://www.joystiq.com/2006...

mayberry3764d ago

@starchild your link article states "presumably hired by sony"...hence, no concrete evidence. Just saying.

liquidhalos3764d ago

Plus there is no money involved, nobody was being paid to give potentially false reviews under the banner of an NDA

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus2310h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos1h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot19h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

RNTody19h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead9h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage2h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast18h ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn197918h ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel10h ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

lodossrage2h ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.

Microsoft Opening Xbox Mobile Game Store in July

The Xbox brand is expanding, as an Xbox mobile game store is opening this coming July where Microsoft will brings its "first-party portfolio."

This will go nowhere.

Nice knowing you Xbox. This is what happens when the house never gets cleaned.

MrDead2d ago

The only this MS is expanding is the amount of feculence it sprays on everyone who just want to enjoy gaming and make games.

The best thing MS can do for the gaming industry is leave and never return.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga1d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow2d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1821d 20h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie1d 10h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow1d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere1d 1h ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow11h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

OtterX1d 23h ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney6h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno1d 22h ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Sheppard7t31d 20h ago

How did Sony kill the series?

Inverno1d 20h ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

1d 5h ago
fsfsxii1d 6h ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno1d 5h ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
