Japan isn’t ready for next-gen and it doesn’t seem to care

GamesRadar: "As much as I hate to admit it, I was dead wrong about this year's Tokyo Game Show. Days before the show opened, I wrote that this year’s Japanese trade show was going to be the most important in years, finally bringing back the 'big time feel' TGS had been missing for some time. TGS 2013 would supposedly be the show where Japan caught up with the west via a bunch of ground-breaking next-gen games. Yet, despite my hopeful predictions, Tokyo Game Show continued its march inward. Instead of this upcoming console generation being a time for renewal in Japanese development, it seems more likely that this will be the generation where the companies finally give up on the west for good."

Look how many Japanese developers/companies struggled transitioning into this gen.

I mean how many Japanese franchises how been ruined this gen or decreased in quality which made the franchise so special

Resident Evil
Final Fantasy
Mega Man (non existent at the moment)
DMC
Kingdom Hearts got too many spin offs
Dragon Quest X became an MMO
FF14 Online was crap they had to redo it.

I could go on, these are just big franchises I'm talking about, we hardly see any new franchises from smaller/new studios and that because they are too busy trying to copy the west thinking that's there solution when in fact it's their problem.

I wouldn't call KH ducky or decreased in quality. Those games in the series answered all the questions KH1 and 2 left open.

KH skipped a whole generation of home consoles and the quality of the franchise hasn't deminished or decreased.

However everything else you mentioned is spot on... Though I still feel DMC4 and DmC:Devil May Cry were great action games in their own right!

I was actually talking more about how with KH they've went on with spin offs for so long which in my opinion arn't as good as the main series and because of this it's complicated the story for people who can't afford all the different handhelds that they are on

The games are all over the place

Your are right about DMC4 and DmC: Devil May Cry, but they didn't live up to the standard set for them by the previous game. DMC4 would have been fine if Capcom continued the course it was going with the game instead of scrapping everything (a year's worth of developing and planning) and starting over when the choice to go multiplatform came about. If DMC4 wasn't rushed and had the same amount of depth and content as DMC3:SE, no one would have had to complain about a cliche anime story line and lack a replayability, thus there would have been no reason for a lack luster reboot for a serious that didn't need it.

*rant over.....
Did I mention that I REALLY like the Devil May Cry series.lol

Agreed the truth is Japanese gaming is DEAD. Japan hasn't done anything truly great gaming wise since the 90's

You must not own a handheld. Most of the vita games coming out are japanese.

It has to take something really REALLY special for Japanese gamers to take console games seriously again. So far the Wii U has failed to do so, whether the PS4 can be that catalyst remains to be seen.

However a console can't alone turn the Japanese gaming scene there will have to be some very memorable games to come out to capture there attention again.

Ron_Danger3851d ago

Then why did the PS4 preorder sell out almost instantly when it went live in Japan?

pete0073851d ago

cause they only had 2 for pre order

Could also be the very reason why there GETTING THEM LAST!
